Title: McDonald's of Grafton. Family of 13 children
Post by: weemalla on Monday 07 October 19 08:32 BST (UK)
I'm looking for the names of 8 sons and 5 daughters to John McDonald c1847-1907 and Ann(e) Burns 1852-1903 married 1874 in Grafton, both died in Grafton NSW, and who are John's parents? I have it that Ann is the daughter of John Burns & Ellen Thomson and was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland and arrived in Australia in Jan 1864 with her parents on the 'Sirocco', but have no clue on John McDonalds parents. All help is appreciated.

Can you list all the information on the document.

What is your source for the information about Ann BURNS?

It appears that there are two families in Grafton. There is John and Ann and John and Annie Euphemia.

The one with Burns in the children’s names is Annie Euphemia.

The one with Thompson in a name is Ann.

You can search for them on NSWBDM.

It is Ellen Thompson McD, born in 1876, who married Mr Allen:

6778/1902 ALLEN Thomas to McDONALD Ellen T GRAFTON

Her mother is Ann at birth.

Wonder if this is his birth registration:

1082/1852 MCDONALD John V18521082 51 parents John and Anne

There are 5 sequential registrations with folks John and Anne, which include a Colin and an Ellen. The John and Ann in Grafton had a Colin and an Ellen. Could be coincidental, of course.

I found in the obit for the eldest son John Allan McDonald in the Argus & Clarence River General Advertiser, 16 Feb 1910 the names of the children "Of the five daughters, the eldest is the wife of Captain Allan, of the tug boat Volunteer, Bellingen Heads, and the remainder, Misses Annie, Emily, Susan and Jean McDonald, are unmarried and reside in Grafton' but I cant find what became of these girls. Were they raised/adopted  by aunts, cousins or others?. Did they marry? Can you help with this please.

If the girls were teenagers it's possible that they stayed on living at home. They were very competent and resourceful in those days.

Hi weemalla,
I think this obituary for Ann Gillies McDonald in 1952 is relevant.  She cared for the younger members of her family after her mother died.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article194759475

It gives the married names of her sisters and location of her brothers

Hi,
Archibald (born 10/6/1771 died 1841), remained in Keppock, near Broadford, Isle of Skye. He did not go with the other members of his family because of his engagement to a woman named Susan Robertson. During or about the year 1802 Archibald Macdonald and Susan Robertson were married and their interests were carried on for them in land and estates in America for some considerable time, as they had received letters to that effect. Finally, the great Southern War of America deprived landowners of their estates and made poor men of many who had been well off before. Grandson Norman says Not many acres and I understand he had to work very hard to maintain his large family
Although Archibald and his wife always entertained the idea of sailing for America it was never fulfilled and they lived their life in Skye and reared a virile and cheerful family of 4 sons and 6 daughters
(Written by W.B. Macdonald, 45 Perkin St. Newcastle, ( Australia), Dec. 9, 1939)
their first child was John The Elder who married Margaret McInnes and came to Australia with 2 children, a third being born shortly after arrival.  She Died 2 years later and he remarried Ann Gillies in Morpeth.  They later moved to the Manning River.  They had 9 children together.  John Allen was the 3rd of these.  John Allen married Annie Burns in 1874.  their children
