We are researching the significant Scottish connections with US and Canadian First Nations.
Ranald Slidell Mackenzie, born in New York, served in the US Army. He was descended from John Slidell and Margery May Mackenzie. The original surname of Mackenzie Slidell was changed at some stage to Slidell Mackenzie to benefit, it is believed, from an inheritance.
Margery May Mackenzie is said to have been born in 1773 either in New York or Scotland. She appears to have been the daughter of Henry Mackenzie.
We would like to establish where she was born and where her father came from.
Appreciate any assistance.

I don't see that name in that year range on Scotland's People. Do you have an Ancestry.com account? If not, I'll browse there for you.

I just Googled him and got many hits. Interesting character.

It may well be that she was not born in Scotland, but was descended from a Scot. If you have time, I'd be grateful if you could browse.

Have you tried looking for the maternal uncle whose will "encouraged" Alexander Slidell (1803-1848) to change his name to Mackenzie? (this according to a number of sites found by Googling) There might be more records for a man than a woman.
If you know his name, date of birth, death, etc., why not put it on here and see what others with more access to Scottish records can find?
I found two completely different sets of parents and brother for Margery Mackenzie, so take your pick, unless you already have the information.

This site
https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/person/alexander-mackenzie#13298169327192813834
says that Ranald's father, Alexander Slidell, "changed surname from Slidell to Mackenzie, 1837, to honor wishes of maternal uncle."
and cites this source:
“Mackenzie, Alexander Slidell,” Dictionary of American Biography, 6:90; “Mackenzie, Alexander Slidell,” in National Cyclopaedia of American Biography, 4:527
maybe the source names the uncle?

and you will need to do further research to rule this man in or out. I'm only mentioning him because he died about the same year that Alexander changed his name from Slidell to Mackenzie. I've seen both 1837 and 1838 given.

Yes, it's Margery May that is said, in different places, to have been born in either Scotland or New York, and having a father named Henry.
