Hello, Andrew and welcome.
This will not be easy. Where in the country was it found, please? Although people did move around, it more likely that it was lost closer to home.
I am seeing a bordure of red and gold (yellow), but that could be silver (white, but discoloured over time).
The problem is the central charge. It is likely to be an animal - beast, bird or fish. Having said that, it is possible that it is an inanimate object, such as a weapon, or a tool. But all I am seeing is a great big X.
How big is this thing? The smaller it is the less likely it is for there to be great detail in the design.
So, back to you, Andrew - where and how big?
Regards
Chas

Bordure compony perhaps?
But looks more like brickwork, with red mortar between the "bricks"? ;D
