Title: todays challenge John Oakes 1675 - 1722 St Chads ,Over
Post by: garstonite on Friday 18 October 19 08:25 BST (UK)
Good Morning
I have all morning on the laptop and I am determined ( with a lot of help from members I hope ) to find my OAKES family in the Civil War - 1642 - 1651 .
John Oakes was born 1675 and died 13th November 1722 and is registered in St Chads , Over ,Cheshire .
his son Ralph Oakes married Mary Holland .
John Oakes is my DIRECT 7 x Great Grandfather - I don't have Johns wife - Ralphs mother - and I don't have Johns parents .
any help with this will be HUGELY appreciated - I would love to solve this before 12 noon - as I have to go out then - I have 11 Grandchildren and my 10yr old Grandaughter is doing the English Civil War topic at present - would like to tell her an Oakes member during that period and where they were
thanks for reading - appreciated  :)

I have found a burial in August 1700 in St Chads of Ellin Oakes - spouse John Oakes - Ralph Oakes was born 1700 - I wonder if this is his mum ?? died in childbirth ??   if it is the wife of my John Oakes he would only be 24/25 at the time ...?

John Oakes and Hannah Smith, botp.

I think that might be a possible because I have Ralph Oakes baptism as 14th June 1702 on Familysearch - not 1700 as I had previously posted ...so if it is my Johns wife she would have been 6 months pregnant at the marriage - definitely one to note - Thanks BumbleB

1685 marriage can be ruled out as John was born 1675

Image for 1702 baptism for Ralph says that John is husband(man) of Swanlow, and that ties in with the 1722 burial of John, husbandman of Swanlow.

That's great BumbleB - So if it were your family would that convince you that Hannah was Ralphs mum / Johns wife ??
so I presume that Swanlow didn't have a church and they used St Chad ??
records for Oakes family seem to stop before 1680 in Over - which makes me think there were no Oakes in Over during the Civil War - so where were they from - ??
added
none in Middlewich either -
my Oakes family are
1675 - 1750 in Over
1730 - 1780 in Middlewich
1780 - 1820 Backford
1820 1870 - Backford /Little Neston / Neston    all Cheshire

It's a big plus, isn't it?  I'd be very much inclined to think they are the same family.

Swanlow is part of Over parish.

I was going to ask you where you found John Oakes' birth year of 1675.  I can't seem to see one in the Cheshire registers available on FindMyPast.

my familytree notes have John Oakes - death 13th November 1722 St Chads Over aged 47   - so I presume I took 47 from 1722 - IGI I presume ...JUST CHECKED ON MY TREE - i DON'T HAVE HIS BIRTH PLACE DOWN - ONLY HIS DEATH - so - he might not have been born in Cheshire ???  apologies - for some reason I thought he was born in Over  :-[ :-[

I hate to say this, but neither the parish register nor the BT give an indication of age on the 1722 burial.

Re the marriage of John Oakes to Elen Hatton - fs has a burial (with image) for an Ellen Oakes wife of John Oakes husbandman of Swanlow and daughter which took place in Over in August 1700. This raises the question, were there two John Oakes or was John married twice and actually born earlier than you think?

Emeltom / Bumble
I tend to think Emeltom might have this cracked - John married twice - and had Richard b 1688 and Margaret b 1689 with Ellin - Ellin died and then he married Hannah and had Ralph - so John is born earlier than 1675 .... as he married Ellin in 1685 - in Middlewich - wher I have lots of Oakes family

You may possibly be missing some children from the marriage to Ellin. The last one you have baptised 1689 and Eliian, along with an unnamed daughter (possibly newborn) was buried 11 years later 1700 - no other children in those 11 years?

Couple of possible baptisms

1 April 1658 Church Minshull son of John
16 November 1663 Sandbach son of Richard.

Church Minshull is about 3 miles from Over and Sandbach about 8.

Hi Garstonite, coincidentally I have been researching a branch of my family in Backford and am also related to the Oakes family.

Thomas Humphries and Elizabeth Oakes of Backford are my 6x great grandparents. Elizabeth was the daughter of Ralph Oakes Jr and Mary Trelfa I believe, and Ralph Jr was the son of Ralph Oakes Sr and Mary Holland.

Hello 8th cousin! 😁

All born in Over parish.

Ralph and Mary Trelfa seem to have many children. All of them up to Elizabeth were born in Middlewich, rest in Backford:

William 1758
John 1760
Thomas 1761
Ralph 1764
Joseph 1765
Mary 1767
Richard 1770
Hannah 1772
Samuel 1774
Elizabeth 1776
Peter 1779
Daniel 1782

Still not sure why they moved from Middlewich to Backford though, and whether any stay in Middlewich.

I've never been to Backford but I don't live very far. I only live in Chester so if there's any graves or houses to see belonging to the family I will definitely go and have a look.

Done some extra research today and I think the most likely birth for our John Oakes is the one born in Church Minshull in 1658, rather than the one from Sandbach.

A John Oakes was living in Sandbach and having children in the 1680s and 90s, which is probably the one who was born there.

There is also a "John Oakes junior of Swanlow, tailor" who is buried in 1718.

Perhaps a son of John and Ellin but can't find his birth record.

Likely siblings of John Oakes of Church Minshull:

Samuel 1664
Mary 1660
Randulph 1670

Also look out for Latin records listing these name as Randulphus, Johannes, etc
