Looking for directions/suggestions where to search for further info on my ancestor Charles Nelson, born Burton in Lonsdale UK in 1904, emigrated to New Zealand as a 21 year old farmer on board the ship Tamaroa, I have not found anything about him since them, although he is mentioned briefly in his father's obituary in 1931.
Would be grateful for any suggestions as to where I might find further information on what happened to him upon his arrival in New Zealand.
Thank you

Hi,
Is he the son baptised as Charles NELSON, of Jacob John NELSON & wife Clara MOUNTNEY?
Baptised 10 Dec 1904 at Burton-in-Lonsdale?
Do you have the exact date of his birth?
Also, how was he mentioned in his father's obituary?
Cheers,
AMBLY

His father left a will. Might be worth downloading a copy to see if there is any mention of Charles
Probate was granted to Clara and also to Jacob William Nelson & John Mountney Nelson

Executor John Raymond NELSON nephew of Cambridge
So maybe this is a wild goose chase?

wow- thank you all so much for your speedy responses! He was the son of Jacob John & Clara & Jacob's obituary merely states that he was survived by 4 sons and 4 daughters one of whom is in New Zealand. I've traced his siblings as staying in England that's how I knew it was Charles.
Clearly I need to do some more digging now that you have all helped with additional information!
-
If you have his exact date of birth - it might help, some death index entries in NZ record the DoB.
There are a lot of Charles Nelson to look at - many with a middle name (which your man doesn't appear to have).
The will of his father might have a clue, as suggested by Carole.

legallas, I can photograph the above file on my next visit to the Auckland archive, as it does not appear to have been digitised yet. It can just join some others I've offered to do.
If interested please contact me by the PM private message service. [To the left under "If only they could talk" click on the little icon [Rt] that looks like note paper, and follow the prompts.]

You are all brilliant- I really didn't hold out much hope of tracking down Charles but the executors named in his spouse's will are all people in my tree so I know it's the right Charles. -Looks like he did not have any children so wont be able to follow his line any further!
Thank you all again.
-
Hello again.
PM recieved. Will look up Johns file when next at the Archive.
I see 5 Bracken Street is occupied with an original 1920 style home, I wonder how many years they were there. [electoral Rolls ?] Also that a C NELSON of the Leamington Club, was regularly reported as a competitor at bowls fixtures.

Just to tidy up a couple of loose ends. The marriage date for Charles Nelson & Agnes Maude Stockton was:
12.12.1929.
This may be the arrival of Agnes in New Zealand......

Hi again.
Getting late again so another day will pass before I can make time to sort out the better photos for you, taken at the Auckland branch of Archives NZ on Tuesday 29th. Been on the road.
John Raymond NELSON, born Cantsfield England. Eleven years in NZ. Died on the Leamington Bowling Green December 19th 1986. Father Alan Edwin NELSON [Farmer] and Mother Eleanor NELSON, nee NELSON.
Letters of Administration [no will to be found] applied for by his sister Eileen GARLICK of Burton-in-Kendal, England.
Only sister / sibling of John Raymond NELSON.
Testomy that no knowledge of, nor Civil registration of issue.
With a bit of luck tomorrow night I will forward the photos taken.
Alan.
PS Yet to contact Cambridge locals with connections to the Bowling Club, and the Museum, for local newspaper account look-ups.
-
Thank you -all very helpful!
I'm very much in your debt.
-
Hi yet again.
Just phoned a retired printer, who grew up in Cambridge. His parents were keen bowlers, and while he was not aware of NELSON'S of Braken St, he went to school with two NELSON boys who would be in their 70's now.
Alan.
PS. 13 photos taken at the Auckland Archives NZ branch, now sent.
PPS. Since the post below, have forwarded several supplied phone numbers, that will get to living relatives of the Nelsons of Cambridge. Yet to discover the actual links. The family links might be a bit like mine, where cousins married same name cousins, or 2nd cousins. I noted the NELSON nee NELSON on the certificate, and that John was a nephew of Charles.
-
Re the 2 Nelson school colleagues of the 2 printers, that is interesting. However it would appear that Charles and Agnes did not have children, -his will leaves everything to her and her will bequeaths everything to nieces and nephews. John Raymond Nelson presumably was also childless and unmarried as his sister was the executrix.
There may be other Nelson ancestors - I, for instance have 2 lines of Nelsons, my father's parents had the same Nelson surname but were unrelated prior to marriage. It is always possible these 2 are distantly connected.
Thank you for the photographs, -something else to look at for me. Today we have been visiting 3 cemeteries attached to Churches around the area where Charles Nelson & his extended family lived. I have several names/dates of birth and death to check against my tree -it'll keep me busy for a while.
Thank you again for all your help.
All good wishes
Kath
