Title: help tracing a boxer and travel records
Post by: B17_Fan on Monday 28 October 19 17:59 GMT (UK)
I've recently discovered that my gt gt grandad Joseph thatcher, from lambourn, was a shin kicker, wrestler and boxer. In this attached article, it says he and his brother henry traversed the usa with his job, and that he boxed at home and abroad. I don't know where to start looking for info about any of this. Would it be documented if he was boxing abroad?
I've tried looking at passenger lists on FindMyPast, but they start from 1891 i think. He would've travelled about c1859.

Can anyone give me any hints or tips on whether i can expand further on all this info?
many thanks

This could be them travelling from Liverpool to New York.

Joseph Thatcher, age 20,
Henry Thatcher, age 21,

Details for both:
Male
English
The occupation for both looks like Miner on the original image but not sure  :-\
Arrival Date:19 Jul 1858
Liverpool to New York
Ship: Manhattan

Original image available on Ancestry, New York Passenger and Crew Lists.

Hmm, I wonder if the "miner" is a mis translation??
Also, if it was them, why would they travel from liverpool??
I know in 1861, Joseph was a lodger in cirencester, but i'd assume if they were going to travel to america, they would've gone from southampton.

Jool - thankyou. It does look like miner. But Joseph was a "fitter" in 1861 and in 1851 he was a "gun and machine Maker".

Henry has various occupations, white smith, gun smith, I wonder if it might not be them

Maybe not them then, it was the only one I could see close to the 1859 date you mentioned.

I don't think it was unusual to sail from Liverpool, my ancestors did the same.
They were from Cambs ,  journeys varied from Southampton and Liverpool with their travels at the same time frame as your family.

From National Museums Liverpool:

'Such were the numbers of emigrants, that it has been estimated that between 1830 and 1930 over nine million emigrants sailed from Liverpool bound for a new life in the US, Canada and Australia. For much of this period Liverpool was, by far, the most important port of departure for emigrants from Europe because, as well as its established transatlantic links, Liverpool was well placed to receive the many emigrants from the countries of north western Europe'
