Title: Searching for Birth mother - Goode/Grundy in Nottingham
Post by: nicolecutler123 on Thursday 07 November 19 11:28 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am researching on behalf of my FIL for his birth mother.
I have the following information from his and her birth certificates.

FIL mother: Born Mary 12/7/1922 @ Grosvenor Nursing Home, 42 Forest Road, Nottingham
Her father: Henry Albert Goode (retired Victualler)
Her Mother: Leah Goode (formerly Parkin)
residing at 24 Beech Ave, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham

This Birth cert was reissued on 25/09/1928 by authority of the register - we don't know why.

On my FIL birth cert his mother is named at Mary Grundy & her mother Parkin. No father listed.
He was born in 1949, Worksop

He was born Michael Grundy and adopted name: *
There is an interesting connection though as his adopted mother was a Grundy and his adopted father is Batty although he definitely was adopted.

I have traced his connection to Goode through DNA (my heritage) to a Doris Ivy Goode (married Elliott) (1930-2016)

Any information would be very much appreciated
Nicole

Welcome to Rootschat Nicole

Can you clarify what it is that you wish to do?

Mary appears to be an only child of Henry and Leah.

Doris certainly doesn't appear to be a sister of Mary.  Perhaps her father was one of Henry's  brothers?

Just a guess but Mary's 1928 birth registration may have been something to do with the education system.

I cannot see any marriage of a Mary Goode to a Grundy unless it was abroad.

Is your FIL still alive? If so you need to remove his name.  Born in 1948 not 1949.

Could . Mary Goode s birth certificate have bee. Re issued because she was also adopted or because  her mother got married to Mr -Goode .

Have you found a baptism for Mary ..?

Ah I see the parents married in 1928 hence most likely the reason for a re-issue of Mary's birth certificate.

Marriages Sep 1928
Goode    Henry A    Parkin    Nottingham    7b   887
Parkin    Leah    Goode    Nottingham    7b   887

I suspect Henry may well be a good deal older than Leah.  Found a likely Henry in the 1911 census at Forest Tavern 257 Mansfield Road Nottingham, occupation publican and married.  Born 1868.  No wife listed.

You beat me to it with the marriage.

There is a death (as per FreeBMD)
Mar qtr 1934 Nottingham vol 7b p529 GOODE Henry A age 73 which is a fair match for the man you found.

Yes he was:-

Goode    Henry Albert        Nottingham    7b   348

Hairdresser in 1891 and 1901 - No children with them.

This may be Ada's death, after Mary was born.

Yes that is correct. I also saw that there was a correction of Mary Parkin from a Mary Allsop to Parkin. I am not sure if this is the same Mary though but seems a conincidence, could this be an adoption?

What I am not clear about is whether your FIL's mother married.  Is this what you are trying to find out?

There is a closed record with Henry and Leah on the 1939.  This usually implies that this person is living.  Is this Mary or someone else?

No, it means that they were born less than 100 years ago.

Probably 'PARKIN'?

Nicole, can you explain how you have made the connection between Mary GRUNDY and Mary PARKIN/GOODE born 1922?

On my FIL birth cert his mother is named at Mary Grundy & her mother Parkin. No father listed.
He was born in 1949, Worksop

Where on the cert do you see Mary's mother named as PARKIN?

A correction to your family tree.  Albert Edward GRUNDY born 1912 and brother to Kathleen and Alwyn is still single in 1939 and living in Carlton, Nottinghamshire.  He could not have married in 1923.  The Albert GRUNDY who married Elsie DAVIS/DAVIES was born in 1900 and is with his wife and daughter in Alfreton in 1939.

Thank you all for your interest and help with this. I am very grateful.

All the information I have is from my FIL.

He had originally asked for his adoption records from the Nottingham office but he was told that these records had been destroyed in a fire?? He then went on to ask a family member also interested in this side of the family and doing some research & another genealogist from a company if they could find out more information.

The following is from this gathered information.

Given the DNA match to a Henry Albert Goode and address of Beech Avenue, Nottingham - a guess was made that this Mary Parkin was/is his mother - Mary Grundy.

There was a William Arthur Grundy
Dec 12 1885
May 20 1954
and
Sarah Jane Grundy (born Alford/Halford)
Jan 7 1887
May 18 1945

Who lived almost opposite H A Goode & Leah Goode at Beech Avenue

It is thought that perhaps Mary Parkin/Goode had a illigetimate child from this part of the Grundy family and named herself as Grundy on his birth certificate to point towards the 'father' of her child - my FIL. Hence her name on his birth certificate not being her actual name.

We have looked for a Mary Grundy who could possibly be his mother everywhere but to no avail.

It is almost like she doesn't exist & perhaps she doesn't under that name.

So if the assumptions are correct Mary had an affair with a married man.

Marriages Jun 1917
Grundy    William A    Halford    Nottingham    7b   538
Halford    Sarah J    Grundy    Nottingham    7b   538

Put herself down as Grundy as a pointer to the father of her child.  Parkin would be a pointer to her mother.

By the way do you know what Mary's second name is?  Begins with P.

Has he reapplied, just to check that they have definitely been destroyed.  (Or did the company genealogist check?)

Yes you're right, this is our assumption too! I think the P may be her original Parkin on birth cert? possibly when changed to Goode if that makes sense.

I don't think he has reapplied, I will ask. The company genealogist actually said that they can't continue any further! That is why I have taken up the research.

No that doesn't make sense.

Mary was registered twice as Goode

Births Sep 1922
Goode    Mary P    Parkin    Nottingham    7b   728
Goode    Mary P    Parkin    Nottingham    7b   See S'28

This suggests to me that you don't actually have Mary's birth certificate so cannot tell me what the P stands for.  It should be on her birth certificate.

Sorry my error only Mary Grundy is on his birth cert.
Connection being very tenuous to Mary Parkin only in that he has a DNA match to H A Goode - Mary Parkins Father and that living opposite the Goodes at Beech Avenue, Notts was William Arthur Grundy and Sarah Alford/Halford. We can only assume that Mary used Grundy on FIL birth cert as a pointer to his father. Unfortunately he father is not listed on his birth cert - would have been useful.

I have traced his connection to Goode through DNA (my heritage) to a Doris Ivy Goode (married Elliott) (1930-2016)

I would have thought that simply tells you that your FIL shares DNA with descendants of Doris Ivy GOODE.  What is the connection with Henry Albert?

As an aside, there is something wrong with Henry's family but I am not sure yet what it is.  It's possible that he wasn't a GOODE at all.

Leah GOODE died in 1980 and left a will.  If you get a copy then she may mention her daughter which would in turn help to trace any descendants.  She had quite a good nest egg.

I would definitely try the adoption route again.

William Arthur and Sarah Grundy had a son William Royston Grundy b.27/4/1918 died 1990 Chichester, West Sussex.   Looks like he married in 1940 Nottingham.   So, if you have identified the right Mary, the married man she had an affair with (if indeed she did) would no doubt be this son rather than William Arthur.

When the birth record of Mary was amended in 1928 she has been listed as plain Mary Goode.   A lady with this name married a Mr. Brown in Sept.1956 Nottingham.  Has this line been pursued in case she was the daughter of Henry and Leah?

William Arthur Grundy is Kathleen Grundy's uncle, her fathers brother.

She would be a 97 year old woman if she were still alive.

The date of birth is exactly the same as Mary Goode's which is why I gave this information.  Seems as if she stayed in the Nottingham area.

Added: You may wish to consider getting the marriage certificate for that SQ 1956 marriage of Mary Goode to Brown.  You can then check what name appears for Mary's father.

Hello, that would be great, thank you for reaching out. I am still searching on behalf of my FIL. There is a DNA connection on My Heritage to O'shea which pointed me after a lot of searching to Goode. The name has come up in searches for my FIL. He is looking both for his biological Mother and Father although we know that would be difficult as there is no father listed on his birth certificate. Nicole

Hello,
I am researching on behalf of my FIL for his birth mother.
I have the following information from his and her birth certificates.

FIL mother: Born Mary 12/7/1922 @ Grosvenor Nursing Home, 42 Forest Road, Nottingham
Her father: Henry Albert Goode (retired Victualler)
Her Mother: Leah Goode (formerly Parkin)
residing at 24 Beech Ave, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham

Hi I have by chance come across your post!
My Mother was the Mary Brown nee Goode that you were looking for. She passed away 29.10.92.
I have a half sister, Marilyn Grundy born January 1945. She was 11 when my Mother married my Father  So she would have been 4 when your FIL was born. She doesnít really know who her Father was except what my Mother told her - that his name was Harold Grundy and he died in the war?? We are not sure if this is true.? All the other details you have discovered are correct. We believe our Grandfather Goode couldnít marry Leah Parkin until his first wife had died. Hence the date of 1928 on the birth certificate.
My sister and I would be very happy to meet your FIL, who would be our half brother??

Nicole
