Title: Margaret Graham
Post by: Nodrogw on Tuesday 12 November 19 10:27 GMT (UK)
My Gt.Gt.Gt. Grandfather was George Scott, a blacksmith who lived in Hollows, Canonbie. He had several grandchildren born out of wedlock and who lived with him and his wife. One was Mary Ann Scott. After many years of searching, I have discovered that her mother was Margaret Graham, and her father was reported to be Robert Scott, George's son, also a blacksmith at Hollows. Mary Ann married William Johnston(e) on 20th August 1880. She died on 22nd January 1881 a few days after giving birth to a son, Andrew. This information has been obtained from Scotlands People. However I have been unable to find anything concerning her mother Margaret Graham. She had been a farm servant before Mary Ann's birth. If anyone can help discover anything about her, I would be most grateful.

I note the death of Mary Ann but cannot find her birth record but I guess around 1861, this must be after the census as she is not with the Scott family.

JOHNSTON   MARY ANN   20   Died    1881   Canonbie

You mentioned that Margaret Graham had been a farm servant before Mary Ann's birth, did you get that information from a census, if so what was her age.

There are 3 eligible Margaret's in Canonbie in 1861 all are married with children.

The 1861 Census shows a Katherine Scott aged 2 who was born in England. Ancestry shows on the census page that her father was John Graham. Can anyone throw any light on why she is shown as Scott or who her mother might have been.

Hi,
1861 Census also has Mary Scott (4mth)  born Langholm 1861 along with Katherine Scott (2) born England. They are in Langholm household of gfather William Graham (53), Margaret Graham (24) and John Graham (19). You could get birth from SP to find mother of Mary Scott and hopefully be same for Katherine.

There are no Katherine Scott's born in England 1859 +/- 1 year but a large number of Catherine's.

It might be best to try to find later census returns you may get the answer. I guess this might be her in 1871 on SP?

CATHERINE SCOTT 13 Langholm or Staplegorton Dumfries

She appears to be with HELEN SCOTT 23
