Title: Emigration to USA via Canada
Post by: RGB on Wednesday 13 November 19 17:44 GMT (UK)
Dear All,
I would like to find out the ship, route and date detail that took one of my deceased relatives to Canada and then the USA. It would be wonderful if you can solve this puzzle for me.

Herbert Grimwood was born in Jan 1867 in Yoxford Suffolk England (parents Joseph and Emily). Herbert died in Polk City Florida in Sept 1959.

I can find him on the 1881 census living at home in Suffolk and then he appears on a USA census in 1900 in Pennsylvania. I am sure he went via Toronto and spent some time there.

Herbert was a Preacher of the Gospel.

Would love to know his passage details and also when and how he moved into the USA

many thanks

Obit for second wife Helen Kohler (not what your asking but may be of interest) - Democrat and Chronicle Rochester, New York

Marriage - Herbert Grimwood - Wyandotte, Wayne, Michigan - 5 June 1933 - Helen Louise Kohler.

1900 census says he immigrated 1887. PA - He had applied for naturalization. Census information is only as good as the informants knowledge.

Thanks Sandra.

I am truly stuck on when and how he travelled to Canada (which Ship etc). Would like to know similarly when he went into USA. I presume via Buffalo but I don't know that - its just guessing on my part.

You certainly have the correct Herbert and thank you. Both of your posts have the right guy. Spot on.

Slightly earlier..............January 1897

MARRIED.

ARNOLD - McCORMICK. - At Wagner, Jan. 26, 1897, by Rev. Herbert Grimwood,
James C. Arnold and Anna E. McCormick, both of Maitland.

Democrat and Sentinel, Lewistown, Thursday, January 28, 1897

Just to mention. There is a lack of border crossing from Canada to the USA in that time frame.  On ancestry they start from 1895, there would be many places to cross the border and not all were recorded.

There is a Pennsylvania Philadelphia Passenger List Index Card for Ernest of Yoxford Suffolk, born 26/10/1868 doesn't give alot of detail- says he landed in Philadelphia 2/5/1890 on unknown steamship.

Oh my goodness Sandra. This is incredibly interesting. I had no idea that a brother Earnest followed him to USA. Thanks too for the info on border crossings being sparse.
I read Herbert was a missionary but have presumed in his case that was not in far flung or remote lands.
Herberts dad. Joseph, is my 2 x great grandfather. He was an inspector of police in Suffolk. In those days think there was only a couple of them.
Isn't it incredible how diverse careers members of the same family had.
Appreciating greatly and much admiring your diligence. Inspiring and helpful research.
