Mary emigrated.... what did John do?

Have you found their birth registrations? They should have place of birth, father's abode & occupation + mother's maiden surname.
-
John popped up in 1902 marrying Ruth gerard, thorpe derbyshire. Lived tgere til they died 1936ish.
-
No sign of birth registrations. Know they were born co mayo, ireland and dads name was Thomas from Johns marr cert.

Are you certain about year of birth for John and his sister? Flexibility regarding age was common. Some chose a convenient age.
What was occupation of John's father and did it say if he was deceased on marriage certificate?
Did John put Mayo for place of birth on 1911 census?

Widening age range there are these birth registrations with Thomas as father;
1881 Claremorris
1874 Tobercurry/Tubbercurry, abode Achonry, County Sligo near boundary with Mayo.
1873 & 1875 Sligo (in case the family moved early in John's childhood)

Re. my reply #10. Those are only suggestions.
Did you calculate John's and Mary's birth years from marriage and death certificates and census? Age on marriage and death certificates, census, military records &c. around that time should be regarded as approximate. Ages of some of my Irish relatives were "approximate" to a decade.
What is the exact wording on the transcript of John's marriage certificate? What is the source of the certificate?
Have you seen Mary's death certificate and obituaries or death notices in newspapers for Mary and John? Obits may have information about origin, parents, siblings.

Was John dead before 1939 ?

Maiden Stone: John died, 18mo after Ruth and his daughter, in 1937.
Wherever he states birthplace its consistently county mayo, ireland.
Mary age/dob is from USA census returns and again is consistent. She states on us census returns immigration 1898. Not seen any docs, just transcriptions so far.
I was reading last night that county boundaries in Ireland changed in 1898, so if they left Ireland before that what they called Mayo might have changed.
I'm not in same place as my files for a little while now. John was a farmhand from 1902 to 1936. His dob is calculated from 1911 census and marr cert transcript agrees.
I'm hoping gro marr cert copy may show res, fathers occupation and witnesses.
