Has anybody ever come across a surname change in their family tree? I have noticed on my great great grandfather Abel Barguss’s baptism record, it gives two suggestions for a surname.. see attached picture, I have never seen this sort of entry before. It seems that possibly the name was changed from Baughurst to Bargus as on Abel’s parents banns records they are listed as Baughurst but all subsequent records they are Bargus? Very intriguing...

That entry is how they normally show a baptism for a child with unmarried parents :)
You don't show a year on the register entries were they the same year

As I have it Abel’s parents were married in 1831 and he was born in 1846. I have just this minute ordered Abel’s birth certificate so that may shed some light, perhaps the marriage entry I have is not for them and they were in fact unmarried :)

I think it probably has an 'or' between the two surnames. As they sound similar it is possibly just the clergy giving an alternative spelling

1841 listed as BUYUS corrected to BARGUSS
Following census listed as BARGUSS
