Title: non-commissioned officer of the Rifles
Post by: deeerdre on Sunday 17 November 19 15:34 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I recently came across a short article newspaper article (archives) about my great great grandfather Mathias/Matthew Rickard (1808 - 1894) in which it states that he was appointed to a new job after qualified as a non-commissioned officer of the Rifles.  This article was published by the Limerick Chronicle in 1842 in Ireland.  My question is what army would he have served in and any idea of the resources I could look up.  Thank you very much.  Deirdre

The British Army.

I cannot immediately see any surviving records for him, someone else may have better luck.

No guarantees, but.....

A good place to start could be the Rifle Brigade (which went through various incarnations in the 19th century - Rifle Corps, 95th Rifle Regiment, Rifle Brigade).

http://www.greenjackets-net.org.uk/rb/1816tl.htm gives the locations of the battalions.

I saw that his new appointment in 1842 was in Carlow, the he was a retired NCO from "the Rifles", and that the report was also published in Belfast and Dublin newspapers.

Just wondering if he had served in the Carlow Rifles militia regiment http://www.igp-web.com/Carlow/Carlow_MILITIA_5.htm

If I am reading the linked site correctly, the Carlow Militia was disembodied in 1816 (when Mathias was eight) and not reactivated until 1854/5 as the "Carlow Rifles" when the Crimean War kicked off (around 12 years after the newspaper article).

Hello Philip,

Thank you very much for that link and for your time.

The link you sent me (timeline), I couldn't open it - well it started opening and couldn't get any further.

Mathias was born in Dublin.  So, I'll keep searching.  Thanks a lot again.

Hello again,

We think this could be the same man: Mathew (Mathias) Rickard

https://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_detail.php?id=1669625

Could he have been a seaman and then become a non-commissioned officer of the Rifles?
Is there a connection?

Thanks,
Deirdre
