Title: Family research fora covering India
Post by: Jeremy Pyne on Friday 27 December 19 12:14 GMT (UK)
Any suggestions please on a forum where I can ask about family research in Kolkata, India. Aware that there have been native Indian Pyne families there from fairly early in the 19th century. Interested to know whether these stem from an Anglo -Indian branch of the Pyne family here in England - several individuals would have been in that area through the East India Co etc. Someone over there may have looked into this?  Many thanks

This might be a good place to start, the Families in British India Society  :)

You may have better luck if you are looking for people in Calcutta, India.

I would suggest putting the family surname into the subject heading too. This might attract anyone researching the same family names and hopefully it might come up in google searches (as rootschat topics often do).

Good luck.

Thanks for replies to date. I'll look more closely at FIBIS though I think you may need a subscription to use the message board. I've picked up snippets on the web , but it would be great to see if Indian Pyne families still around today have any record of the family origins in that part of the world.

I had great success with writing to the local churches if that helps.

That's correct. It's more of a discussion forum than a message-board, and it can be very helpful indeed. At £15 per year (UK), FIBIS membership is one of the best-value subscriptions for the serious researcher, because the combined experience and knowledge-level of its members is huge.

The enquirer asked about discussion forums. I believe the database is unlikely to help with his particular interest.

Search on roots chat for the pyne family with Indian connections . I seem to remember they stemmed from Devon. The family joined up with part of my research into general coffin as they had links with the name pyne coffin
