Title: Piercy Smith
Post by: Jane190 on Monday 06 January 20 04:12 GMT (UK)
Piercy Smith was born in Cuckfield Sussex in 1748 to Thomas and Elizabeth , and later had two illegitimate children Thomas b. 1770 Cuckfield(my ancestor) and Sarah b.1774. Piercy married 1779 in Cuckfield John Valance or Valence and moved to Burstow Surrey where they had children together.

I want to find out what happened to Piercy Valance nee Smith , When and Where did she die? I think she died in Burstow Surrey but I’m not sure.

Finding the father of her illegitimate children is impossible ,right ?

regards

Jane

Jane

Depends whether there were any bastardy bonds or fathers named on parish records of baptisms.

i.e. Not impossible, depending on the circumstances and records available.

Thank you! Do you know where I can look for bastardy bonds or bastardy orders for Sussex? Would be interesting to know if there’s anything for Piercy Smith

This is the website for The Keep, the East Sussex record office.

https://www.thekeep.info

Just type your query into the search box to see what is available.

There will be a similar site for the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester if you google.

Hi Pheno and other members  ;)

There are Bastardy orders/bonds for several woman in the West Sussex area but no suitable entry for my ancestor Piercy Smith and her two children Thomas born 1770 and Sarah born 1774 :( does it mean that there’s no bastardy order/ bond for her or just not available online?

They wont necessarily be available online but the Record Office catalogues should indicate whether they exist or not.  If so you would need to contact the reprographics team for an estimate of cost to reproduce or visit the record office in person.

If nothing in the RO catalogue then I am afraid you are probably unlucky.

Okay Thank you very much Pheno!

After discussing the topic about Bastardy order or bonds , I’m still interested to find out when and where Piercy Valance or Valence nee Smith died. She moved to Burstow Surrey with her husband John and had other children in Burstow . Is there a death for her in Burstow ? I think she left her two illegitimate in Sussex and they maybe stayed with their grandparents
