I am researching a lead from a family member in a letter. Mary Mulligan, my great aunt was supposed to either finish her education, or become a teacher here. I can’t get any inroads into this, either yearbooks or even if this school/college is in the right area of New York? Mary was born 1903 in Scotland, emigrated to the USA in 1925, married in 1933 to John Mulligan, had two children, (*) and (*), who I also cannot trace. She died 1966 in Florida.I was hoping to trace even a yearbook from this lead StAugustines College. ring a bell with anyone? Thank you, Kathy

Do you have her in 1930 census?
Here she is with John and children in 1940 but you don’t give her maiden name for 1930 search. Was she a student/teacher then perhaps?

I can see a 1933 marriage in Kings Co NY (via https://stevemorse.org/vital/nymarriages-igg.html?index=groom ) of John Mulligan to a Mary B Ryan, the only John Mullig* to a Mary marriage that year.
Mary B Ryan came into the US in 1929, having previously been in the US 1925-1929. Address given in the US was that of a friend, Mrs Mary Carpenter, 423, Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Her occupation is governess.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24FS-JPY
In 1930 a Mary Ryan b. Scotland is living with a Carpenter family, headed up by banker James Carpenter and his wife Mary - she is listed as a nurse but may mean nurse/nanny to their younger children in this context as opposed to a medical nurse.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4JH-CJ2
It would be good to know exactly what the wording in the letter says. If she came into the US as a young woman in her 20s and was working as a governess, it doesn't seem out of the question that she was a teacher before her marriage - but I can't find a St Augustine's College in the NY area.
There is a St Augustine's which is a RC church in Brooklyn: https://staugustineparkslope.org/

Hi Heywood, she was Mary Bonar Ryan before her marriage. I didn’t know she had gone back to Scotland in 1929, I know her mother was ill and died in 1930 .. maybe a final visit?
New information, nurse/nanny, thx so much.
Sandra, thx for Obituary. Are these available for free online?
I can’t find St Augustine’s College either in Brooklyn.
Will post what I have.
Thx guys.
-
Mary was a teacher, she completed her education at St Augustines College she taught for 30 years in Brooklyn. She married John Mulligan from Edinburgh. Molly as she was known was former vice-state Chairman of the Junior Daughters of America and was an active Girl Scout. Her sister Eleanor was with her in Florida where she died. She was survived by 2 daughters.
This is what I have.
Daughters were Joan and Betty Mulligan , kings, Brooklyn, NY from 1941 census. I have not one single lead as to how to trace them.
-
Sandra, you have the right people from Find a Grave, Molly Mary Mulligan, her husband John, and his further marriage to Frances, who seemed to love being married!
-
The daughters are still living as far as we know, RootsChat policy is that we cannot name living people, hence the moderator removed the names in the original post.
I gave you a lead to trace "J" in reply 4 (3/8/1937)

There is an obituary online re daughter J’s husband with more information.
Perhaps there was a school attached to St Augustine’s Church as previously mentioned.
-
Sandra, thx so much for the obituary! Now I have names to go forward too.
Can you also look to see if there is one for John Mulligan too? My server is blocking me from the obit page I need? Many thanks!
-
What is/were Daughters of America? Molly Ryan came from a mining community in Scotland, definitely not involved in the American Revolution that I can see, though both sides of the family had deep roots in Ireland?
