What info do you already have in the way of census entries and marriage etc?  This helps to prevent us wasting time duplicating

All census info is free at www.familysearch.org

I only have a census record of Thomas Hall. His birthday varies from 1851 to 1854. But I cannot find any record of a birth certificate on Find my Past. I am tracking my uncle Thomas Hall who died a considerable time ago (1965), his grandfather Edward and then his father - the Thomas as above of 1851.

As he is your uncle presumably he shares the same parents as your direct line so do you know who his parents were.

Could you please give full details of the census he appears on in 1851

The Thomas who is my uncle married my mother's sister. The census with the most information is the 1901 which lists Thomas Hall and his wife Mary. There are 11 children listed and the residence is listed as Link House Farm.Thomas dob is recorded as 1851. Mary is recorded as 1859.

At the moment I am ordering certificates to establish information. I had presumed that Thomas born 1851 would have had a birth certificate? I am interested in one of Thomas/Mary sons - an Edward who was born in 1881.

His marriage to your mothers sister should name his father.  Census gives place of birth as Bothal.

Yes thankyou but having looked at the birth records - the nearest match is 1850. I know the Thomas Hall born circa1850 died on the 18 June 1904. So I have something to work on...

Births in the early years of registration were not always registered so you cannot guarantee that you will find a birth certificate.

In 1881 there is a Mary Ann Grey, aunt, born Woodhorn, living with Thomas, then aged 27, and family at Link House (RG 11/ 5091/35/69)

In 1871 there is this family at Bothal (RG 10/5167/31/56)

Edward Gray, head, unm, 60, farmer etc.,, Woodhorn
Mary Gray, sister, unm, 58, Woodhorn
Thomas Hall, nephew, unm, 17, ag. lab. gen. servt, Bothal

If Thomas is Edward and Mary's nephew, it follows that his mother's maiden name should be Gray.
His age at these two censuses leads to a birth year of c. 1854.
If he was indeed born in Bothal his birth should be registered in Morpeth R.D.

Which leads to this possible birth registration
Thomas Hall, 3rd q 1853, Morpeth 10b, 208, mother's maiden surname Gray.
