Title: Albert Salter post 1901
Post by: MacGrigor on Thursday 23 January 20 13:30 GMT (UK)
Hello,

Albert (born c. 1872, Wiltshire) was living at 21 Gas Street in Oxford for the 1901 Census, with his wife Rosanna (born c. 1874, Wiltshire), and their children. I haven’t been able to find them post 1901, despite searches on FamilySearch, Ancestry and FindMyPast.

I’d appreciate any help!

Adam

Having consulted the 1901 Census, that’s right! There’s also Edith Salter, born in Oxford c. 1899.

Elsie is listed with the surname Salters and in Muller's Orphan Houses, Ashley Down, Bristol  - They were spread far and wide poor souls

She is on the 1939 Register - still single

Well at least she was with her sister Edith there. They seem to have all been in pairs thankfully. Not sure where Sidney is, but he appears to have left England later that year.

The ultimate destination for the boys was the Barnardo Home in Toronto Ontario Canada.

A George Henry Salter married Helen McGee in Toronto Ontario 26 Jun 1926.
Father Albert Edward Salter, mother not known.
Helen was b. in Australia, George b. England

Looks like your George?

The image for this record is available on Anc...y if you have world access; it would also be available on familysearch (free).

This looks like the marriage of William...

William John Salter
to
Christina Krotz
24 Nov 1931 at Listowel Perth County Ontario
Father Albert Edward Salter
Mother Rosanna Trembling
William is living in Wallace Township Perth County at the time of his marriage and the same place is given as his place of birth. The latter would appear to be an error.

The image of this record is available as outlined above for Gerorge.

3 more....

A Sydney James arrived Quebec Canada 29 Jun 1920 on the Scotian. He was going to the Barnardo Home in Toronto Ontario. Form 30A has his father as A E Salter of Bristol. Looks like your Sydney.

Annie and Emma arrived Quebec 05 May 1911 on the Victorian. They were with a party noted as Church of England Waifs and Strays. Theybwere bound for Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario.

Emma married Harry Harris at St Simon's Church Toronto Ontario 27 Oct 1915
Father Albert Edward Salter
Mother Rose Hannah Tremblyn

Annie married Percival Frederick Hoadley at Hamilton Ontario 30/31 May 1916
Father Albert Edward Salter
Mother Rosanna Trembling

Images of marriage records avalable as previously noted.

How very sad. 5 Home Children so far. I hope they were able to be in contact with each other and their father.

You might consider adding their names to the Home Children list here on RootsChat.

Thanks polarbear! That’s some great digging you’ve done. I’ll get it all typed up now. It’s a very tragic story indeed.

I haven’t been able to find the marriage for Emma Salter in 1915 to Harry Harris. Can you tell me how old he was and what he worked as? I’ve got plenty on Percival Hoadley, as apparently he was in the First World War.

Haven’t found any trace of Harry Harris in England. We know he’s born c. 1883, and his parents are given as Saul J. Harris and Fannie Jarcia (Garcia?).

That certainly looks very likely! Probably of Jewish descent, judging by the forenames. And probably Sephardi Jewish on the mother’s side with a name like Garcia.
