I have traced this family back to Archibald Stewart (1801-1879) but can make no further progress. Archibald probably came from Doohat in neighbouring County Monaghan. If anyone has any ideas I should be extremely grateful.

Just putting up some links.
Death of Archibald Stewart. He was married, so when did his widow die?

Thanks again, Archibald's widow Jane died in 1883. What I want is to find some trace of Archibald's parents. So far I can find nothing. Your kindness is appreciated.

This may be her. Death of Jane Stewart in 1883 at Carolina, aged 78. The informant was her son Robert, who was also the informant on his father's death record.

Added: You just beat me to the draw!
What religion were they?

Is this their son Robert in the 1901 Irish census?

Did his house have a name?
-
Thank you again. The farm house had no name that I know of but it was long and single storied with a front door under a little elliptical fanlight. The 'census' is most interesting - do you know what date it is and for what purpose it was made? I am so grateful that you should take the time to look into these matters.

The 1901 census is interesting. The family was Methodist by then having been Church of Ireland but I wonder if Archibald might not have been Presbyterian because he was married in the C of I parish church 'by licence'. Am I right to think that this could suggest that he was not of the Church of Ireland?

Thats brilliant. Now I know where the Arnotts were until 1855.The original page you directed me to was the hand written building valuation sheet including an entry at 7 for the'widow anne arnott'. This was corrected in the valuation when published to delete her and list a new tenant for the 22 acre holding. Could I ask you to explain how I find the hand written sheets?

There are 'notebooks' from which the stuff in Ledgers posted were compiled...not sure if they exist now!
