Title: MCGREGOR, gardener, Kingarth
Post by: vjames on Sunday 21 August 05 05:28 BST (UK)
I'm looking for information on the family of Daniel MCGREGOR, born circa 1815 in Cambleton, Argyll, married in 1829 to Elizabeth (Betsey) MCLEOREN born circa 1814 in Southend, Argyll. They are in the 1841 census in Kerrycroy Village in Kingarth, in 1851 in Birgadale Buts, can't find them in 1861 and then he shows as a widower in 1871 at Cottage at Piperhall. His son Alexander born circa 1835 is my gt gt grandfather. Alexander was a blacksmith and moved to Glasgow where he married and raised his family, one of which came to Canada.

My grandfather's papers stated that Daniel was the head gardener at the Bute Estate, but the census says that he was a gardener's  labourer. I've contacted the Estate many months ago for any information, but have received no reply.
Any ideas on how I might pursue this investigation?

Thanks for any help.
Val

Hi Joe,
A belated thank you for your help. That adds one more piece to the puzzle. We were fortunate to have visited Bute this past summer and we found Daniel and Elizabeth's grave in the Kingarth cemetery. We also visited The Bute Estate but they were too busy to try and help us trace Daniel's work there. It was wonderful just to walk through the gardens that we knew he had tended. Bute was a lovely island, even in the rain.

Thanks again for your help,
Val

Hi all

I do not think this is the family I am looking for but there are a few similarities

My Daniel McGregor was also born in 1815 and he ties into the Gardiner family through his stepfather John Robert Scott

One of my ancestors is Francis Wallace, a gardener in Kilfinan parish (around the 1760s-70s), Argyll. He married Mary Stewart in 1754, Rothesay, Bute. Before that, he worked as a gardener at what is today's Castle Toward. This was just across the water from Bute. His father-in-law, William Stewart, was in Kingarth parish for a time.

I wonder if this is Daniel's grandfather of other relation?
