Hi,
Trying to find something out for a lady.....I’m not a relative, just saw the request on Forestry Memories website and want to help if I can.
This lady’s father died in 1949 from a Forestry accident. His name was John Wallace, born in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1915. Married Gertrude Scott in 1936. They lived at 2 Hermitage Place, Leith Links, Edinburgh. He died at Thurleston, Ettrick on 26/7/1949.
His daughter, now 80, would like to know where her father is buried or where his remains are.
Please, if anyone can help, please do!
Thank you,
Shona

He died July 26th the tree he was cutting killed him.
There is nothing in the British newspaper archive.
One would think he would have buried in Leith Links or maybe cremated.
Did her mother remarry?
Don

Hi Dom,
I don’t know if his wife remarried. All the details I know are in my original posting.
I would just like to be able to help his daughter find out where he is!
Thanks though, Leith Links may be a starter.

John Wallace born 1915, died at Thirlestane Glen, Ettrick, Selkirksire 1949.
His wife and he were separated. His wife, Gertrude Mary Wallace, did not marry again.
They never lived together at Hermitage Place, Leith Links, Edinburgh

Hi James
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Just adding the link to the thread on John Wallace on the Forestry-Memories site www.forestry-memories.org.uk/picture/number4611 for extra background here.

I have his family tree.
-
Hi James,
That’s great you found his family tree!
Sorry not to have replied to both your recent posts, been away and not had a chance to check!
Does John’s family tree give any more info than we already have? Where did you find it?
Interesting that he and his wife separated. I wonder if that’s why his daughter doesn’t know where he was buried/where his remains are?
I’ll keep searching!
Best wishes,
Shona

Hi Sandra,
I did his family tree for several generations. I doubt if it would be helpful in finding his Grave. Others are mainly buried in Kirkcubrightshire. I have photocopies.
The daughter [Moyra] stayed with her mother and she was never told where he was buried.
It appears that, after a war injury, he was an insurance man in Edinburgh before going back to forest work.
There was an elder daughter [now dead] at the funeral. Her children do not know where.
There is a suspicion that his separated wife used her name for the funeral / Cremation.
Her name is Gertrude Mary Wallace nee Scott or Sanderson. She died in the year 2000 and was cremated at Falkirk .....James

Hi James,
I have conducted a search of the records we hold and cannot locate any information relating to John Wallace using the name and date of death you provided. I have attached the contact information for the private cemeteries and crematoria in Edinburgh who hold their own records, you will need to contact them directly.
Regarding Newington Cemetery, unfortunately the records we hold for Newington are not great. Previous owners of the cemetery had not recorded well and the cemetery was abandoned, we believe burials may have been completed without records being held, records were damaged and in some areas just do not exist. I am glad you were able to locate the grave.
Kind Regards,
Danielle.

James, with John being estranged from his wife, have you considered that he may have been buried/cremated close to his own own family?
He didn't have any ties to Midlothian did he?
Monica
-
Moyra and I have looked in Mid Lothian, The Borders, and all the way round his own home country.
-
This should be ''Thirlestane'' as given on the Sheriffs Entry
-
The nearest Cemetery and Crematorium to Hermitage Place is Seafield Cemetery and Crematorium. Could he have been cremated there if the poor man was brought back to Edinburgh. Seafield Crematorium was opened in 1939.

I have been to Seafield many times .Thankyou. James
-
I have been in touch with several people. There are no records of John at Piershill and Eastern Cemeteries. Neither is there a record at Seafield.
I’ve contacted bereavement@edinburgh.gov.uk, but no reply as yet.
I have asked under the name John Wallace. Looking at the other posts, is it feasible he was buried/cremated with his wife’s maiden name then?
Thanks,
Shona

I noticed that the death was late on a Friday Night. Possible that he was working during the week and came to Thirlestane Glen at the weekends. There is a photograph of him near Leith Links I think.
-
I tried to send a photo of John Wallace [1915-1949] when he was living in Leith Links and working in Insurance and also in Forestry in Selkirkshire, The photo did not carry,
-
Hi James,
Oh a photo would be nice to see! I must admit I’ve not looked for any information for a while, but will continue soon!
Hope you’re keeping well amongst all this uncertainty!
Best wishes,
Shona

How do I send two photographs of John Wallace
-
John Wallace, as far as we can see, by mention of date, names and position, John was Buried at Newington, Edinburgh in September 1949. Newington would lie between where Leith [where John was working] and the Place in the Borders were he killed in a tree accident. Now, after a long search, you know where he is Moyra. There may be no Grave, but there is a big Cemetery.
-
Hi,
Well done on getting this far!
A couple of questions....how do you know he is buried here and why does he have no grave?
Oh, a third one......does his daughter now have this info?!
That’s nice to have found it out for the family.

Mrs JOHN WALLACE and Miss WALLACE return their grateful thanks to all friends for the many kind expressions of sympathy extended to them in their great loss also for the beautiful flowers received , and to all who kindly attended at Newington Cemetery .
-
This was a thank you some time after the funeral. [Scotsman 10 September 1949]. Newington says there is no stone. On the other hand, I have found stones which Mortonhall said did not exist. I have found the house where Moyra's Father was born, lived and moved, and now his final resting place. She knows the name of the other sister [who attended /deseathed] and always wondered why she was not asked to attend. As the couple were separated with one in Leith and another in ,Denholm, Newington was an ideal meeting spot for a funeral. Maybe the Forestry Commission should raise one. Moyra knows about this.
-
Dear James,
I’m so pleased you’ve been successful in filling in some of the details for Moyra. It’s a lovely thing to have done and I’m sure this will have given her comfort.
Best wishes to you,
Shona

There are two Hermitage Places. To avoid confusion one was entered as Raeburn Place where John Wallace is listed in 1948, the year before he died. His wife and children are not mentioned as they live elsewhere.
-
Once, when a teenager cycling from Denholm to Edinburgh, I met Mrs Gertrude Wallace and Katie, down Leith Walk, crossing for Easter Road, in the right direction of 2 Hermitage Place at Leith. Perhaps she didn't know that John Wallace lived in Rayburn about a year [Summer 1948] before his death [July 1949]

I've been sending photos for year, but this one beats me.

One will be the granfather and other of the father, and both of the same name and family.
