Title: Death of Elijah Ludford Lockwood

The death of Elijah L Lockwood was reported in the Leicester Chronicle in Dec 1853.
It said he had died from a short illness at St brisks' on the Volga in September 1853. I have tried to find st brisks' without success. I don't know whether it was a hospital or a  british  base or a ship. Has anyone any ideas?

For background info Elijah was born in 1810 /11 in Leicester and was the son of Henson Lockwood and Martha Ludford. He married Mary Jane Allen in 1838 and the couple had one child Mary Elizabeth born in 1839.
They moved to Derby where they appear on the 1841 census and by 1851 are in Birmingham. Elijah was a mechanic by profession.

If it was a hospital, have you considered how that would read in Russian in 1853?

Thought I had managed to find a ship called St Brik(s), but it was St Erik(s).

Just looked up that 1851 census - his wife, as Jane, was born 'Open Sea', so they pick and choose interesting birth and death locations.

By 1861 she had married Samuel George, just in case anyone is looking to see if she also died abroad

Yes, should have said Mary remarried and the "open sea". Her father was a pilot named Ralph Allen but no other information exists about him as far as I can tell.
I couldn't begin to speculate on  what the Russian translation of St Brisks' might be but I was thinking along the lines of British base or hospital because it sounds so anglicised. Maybe it was a misprint or a nickname?
No Saints on either list with that name either. It's a knotty one, that's for sure.

It very clearly says St Brisks' on the Volga in the Leicester Chronicle, but we do not know where they got that information from.

Because there is no obvious saint, I wondered if they had misread and it was St Erik, as that got confused a lot in newspapers, but no better, really.

Have you looked to see if the death was registered with a British Consul abroad?

Ask for help on the Europe (?) boards for possible St Brisks?
