Title: Clarence L Hummer
Post by: doidy on Sunday 16 February 20 15:57 GMT (UK)
Hi.
I have a Clarence L Hummer born born 1911 New Jersey, USA, died Aug 1983, Pennsylvania. He married Florence Rodgers nee Fehr after she was widowed in 1969. This is evident from her obituary in 1990. However I have drawn a blank on finding the marriage?

Within the extended family I have notice of marriage license for Clarence L Hummer to Pauline Smith in 1942, in Allentown, Easton. Again I can't find the marriage? Pauline S Hummer died 1967, I can find her burial in Pennsylvania, but not her death?

Now it seems to me that looking at this, there are two possibilities:-

1) Was Clarence a spinster when he married Florence at the age of 58 plus?

2) Was Clarence that married Florence circa 1969 a widow & previously married to Pauline Smith who would of died in 1967? Clarence who married Pauline, didn't have children with her?

Any help much appreciated.

Is this reference to his military service in June 1942, if so he is apparently single then

Clarence's obit, 7 Aug 1983, mentions stepchildren*, but no children.

* maybe living? I haven't done the math.

Could the obits for his brother or sister help ?

Not that it helps you but the Hummer parents seem to be buried in the same cemetery.  Edith 1929 - John 1936 and a brother John C Hummer in 1980

In 1940, he was living in Phillipsburg, NJ

1940 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K4YF-1MF

It appears he got a marriage license in Dec. 1942. Pauline was from Allentown, PA

========

It appears Pauline was born in England/Ireland. Her father was John J. Smith who died in 1962. Pauline is mentioned in his obit as "Mrs. Pauline Hummer of Riegelsville".  Riegelsville, PA is just a few miles south of Phillipsburg, NJ & Easton, PA. They all sit on the two states border.

Pauline's sister Alma died in 1999. The only surviving sibling listed was Evelyn Wunderley.

It appears Pauline must have died between 1962 & 1983. It also appears all the children were born in Ireland, not England as 1930 census seems to suggest.

Hi.
Thank you all for your replies. Not sure I am replying correctly? Would like to reply individually though not privately to each one if some one can advice how? Wading through the info.

Could Clarence of been single at time of enlistment in 1942, then marriage license applied for Dec 1942? This would fit.

Pauline died 1967 (query suicide, would that be in a newspaper any where?), that would mean if it is one and same Clarence L he was then free to remarry Florence circa 1969.

Obits for rest of family very helpful, I am working through the info. If only we could locate the two marriages of Clarence L, it might give dob on them?

This could be Pauline's death
Name:    Pauline Hummer
Death Date:    Sep 1967
Death Place:    Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey, USA

There was another woman of that name living in Phillipsburg, age 2, in 1940. But she married H.R. in May 1954, then survived her father Paul whose obituary is in the 29 Aug 1978 Allentown Morning Call. In his obit she is called Mrs Pauline R.

Again, I haven't done the research to see if the other Pauline and her husband are living, which is why I just put the inititals here.

At any rate, that could be your Pauline's death.

P.S. your method of replying is fine. :)

This could be Pauline's death
Name:    Pauline Hummer
Death Date:    Sep 1967
Death Place:    Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey, USA

According to the New Jersey death index, this Pauline Hummer died in Phillipsburg (2176), but her residence was Pennsylvania (9137). This seems to fit known information.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
I am now in the position where I have Clarence L Hummer, married Pauline Smith circa late 1942.
In 1962 in her father's obituary mention is made of daughter "Mrs, Pauline Hummer, Riegelsville". In 1967 Pauline dies:-
Pauline S. Hummer
Death Date:   sep 1967
Cemetery:   Fairmount Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place:   Phillipsburg, Warren County (Warren), New Jersey, United States of America
So far, no obituary, no death (said by extended family to be suicide)  or marriage? Nothing is known abt her husband Clarence L Hummer. It is known there were no children from this marriage.

I also have Clarence Leroy Hummer born 1911 N.J, USA, died 1983 Easton Hospital, Pennsylvania. His obituary says his wife is Florence E Rodgers nee Fehr. There is mention of his step children. It says he is formerly of  Riegsville. He worked in Riegel paper company before retiring in 1975 after 32 years. Florence was widowed in 1969, so was free to remarry. I can't find this marriage either?

Now Pauline Smith, wife of Clarence (1) was first cousin once removed of Florence's first husband Hubert Fred Rodgers.

If only I could turn up a marriage ref for either, it would give me an age for Clarence (1), marital status ie bachelor/widow for Clarence (2).

What does anyone else think, the fact that there is a relationship through marriage & Riegsville comes up referring to Pauline and to Clarence (2)?

You could try a local library for an obituary for Pauline (Smith) Hummer, 1967. First choice would be the town in PA that she was living in when she died.
If the obit were online, someone here would have posted it by now, based on my couple years of being on rootschat. People are helpful that way.

I don't think you are going to be able to access her death record. NJ is strict on records. If she had died in Pennsylvania, it would be different, they are online.

The PA marriage records might be available, I don't know their rules for marriage records. Determine what county they married in, then contact that county.

There weren't a lot of Clarence L Hummers in the area, so they are probably the same person, but you never know.

The Allentown library has an obituary index online.  http://www.allentownpl.org/morning-call-obituary-index/  I didn't see anything for Pauline.

It looks like Florence Rodgers Hummer died in Aug. 1990.  Her obituary lists her as the widow of Clarence L. Hummer & H. F. Rodgers.

Recent Pennsylvania marriages aren't typically online.  There are some links here, but most don't go into the 1960s.  https://www.genealogybranches.com/pennsylvania.html

Still struggling to confirm these two Clarence L Hummer's are one and same.
I am now in touch with a son of widow Florence, who he says married Clarence L Hummer in 1969, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He knows nothing abt Clarence.

Now it has come to my attention that Clarence Leroy Hummer that married Florence was born in Phillipsburg, N.J.

Now Pauline Smith Hummer, wife of Clarence L Hummer, she died in Phillipsburg. That is something of a coincidence! So the marriage between Pauline Smith & Clarence L Hummer abt 1942, was probably Phillipsburg???????????

I just need something that clarifies that Clarence's dob or parents to confirm he is one and same as Clarence Leroy Hummer. Amazingly it isn't such a rare name as I thought.

Any help appreciated please.

Hi Sandra.
Thank you so much for all the info. The burial card is strange with Charles on it instead of Clarence, but everything else matches.
ALL the info matches Clarence Leroy Hummer that married widow Florence Elizabeth Fehr Rodgers (widowed). I am 100% happy with that.

The Clarence L Hummer that married Pauline Smith circa 1942 (who died 1967) would of been in the Philipsburg area. I don't know anything abt him, but the age of the one in all the records, who was born and brought up in Philipsburg, seems to fit the bill? Whilst I can't be 100% sure, I am as sure as is possible. The added fact that their is a distant family relationship between Pauline Smith and the first husband of Florence Fehr seems to add to the likelihood. It would appear to be to many coincidences other than to be correct.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Sandra.
Many thanks for that.
Now I have just perused all the info I have again, before I press the merge button for Clarence L Hummer, husband of Pauline Smith & Clarence Leroy Hummer, husband of Florence Fehr Rodgers. Apart from all the dates being feasible, I have spotted two more clues. The obit for Pauline Hummer nee Smith's father gives her as Mrs Pauline Hummer of Riegelsville.

Now the obit for Clarence Leroy Hummer says he worked at the Riegal paper mill co for 32 years before retiring in 1976. We know he was a barman when conscripted in 1940. So another manual job seems probable. The location fits with Pauline's father's obit's mention of her as Mrs Pauline Hummer of Riegelsville.

Pauline Smith & Florence's first husband Hubert Fred Rodgers were first cousins one removed.

Eureka????? Can I press the merge button for Clarence L Hummer & Clarence Leroy Hummer?????????
