I'm trying to figure out an apparent anomaly on a 1911 census return for Whittlesey. Obviously I know it was the first to be filled in by the householder himself. Mr Bedford is at home with his wife and 12 year old son. The part of the statement that he made that I am questioning is the following:
Total children born alive: 9; Children still living: 2; Children who have died: 7
Now I know that he married Fanny Sarson in 1883 - and that in a couple of records her MMN is given as Syerson, but so far I have only found five recorded births - of which three died in infancy - for this couple. I'm looking for an explanation for the missing four.
I did have a similar finding in another county (Leicestershire). There the Welford Road cemetery has an area for the burial of stillbirths and these are recorded with the parents' or mother's name in the cemetery records.
Has John Bedford done the same - and recorded stillbirths? Is there a similar record for the Whittlesey Cemetery?
Thank you
Alan

There is an 8 year gap between Florence Jane 1891-1892 and Ernest John in 1899. Possibilty there.

Are deaths recorded if the births aren’t?

Hi Jamjar
Stillbirths aren't recorded - and therefore deaths aren't. As mentioned above I did find a different family in Leicester with a number of stillbirths because they were recorded amongst the burials at Welford Road Cemetery.

I see this death WHITTLESEY FreeBMD, but no birth on GRO UK:
DEC 1900 Bedford Albert Saunders 0
He is on FreeBMD, though SEP 1900.

Hi Amondg
I'm just wondering if your "possibility there" might be referring to a very different issue.
I must admit that I do scrutinise 1911 census returns very critically and had cause very recently to find another "missing children" problem. On this occasion the number of children concerned was an understatement rather than an overstatement. The householder had declared 6 children - all living. The perceived wisdom (regurgitated on several Ancestry trees) that 2 further children were born after 1911, making 8 in all. This entry also had a gap of nine years between two of the declared infants.
This time we were able to find six more births, all in the gap, and all dying within weeks. That gave this couple 14 live births. Although death certificates only gave vague, non-pathological causes of death, the pattern would fit with Kassowitz's Law of 1875.
I'm not sure I can find any such diagnosis for the Bedfords!
Cheers Alan
