I hope someone can help, I am not that proficient at looking at US records as I dont quite understand them or what I should be looking for
I am looking for children of a woman called Selina Maud Pember. I think she married a man called Frederick W Cocroft in 1919. I seem to have found that they married in London as well as New York, is that normal?
I think they had a daughter called (*) Cocroft, born in New York in 1924.
My next problem is that I dont seem to be able to find marriage records for her. Did she marry a Mr Laurent and go on to have a son called Don?
But also, did Selina and Frederick have any more children?
Do American records show the mothers maiden name?
Thanks for any help

It appears that their daughter was alive as of her son's death in 2017, so she may still be living and I removed her name from your post. No siblings are mentioned in her son's obituary, which can be found on findagrave.com.
What you will find on American records varies by location and time frame, but a birth, marriage, or death record from the 20th century will likely have a mother's maiden name if it is known.
-
Thanks, I think my problem is that I dont know if that is her son, because I cant seem to put a marriage together which identifes her fathers name which would 'prove' it for me.
-
Ive just realised I put their daughter as being born in 1924 by mistake, it is actually 1920

No I dont know that she did, Im trying to find out, however on ancestry (which is not accurate I know) when you search for her, it comes up with another surname which sometimes can indicate that this is the same woman but under her married name

It looks like Selina Maud was not with Frederick & daughter for the 1940 census or in 1942 when he registered for the draft and listed his daughter as the person who would always know where he lived. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F3JJ-4ZK Not sure what became of her.
It looks like Frederick died in 1952. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/199806839 He appears to be on the New York City death index under Fre Cocroft and the New York State death index as Frederic Cocroft with a place of death of Orangetown, New York. Maybe his daughter and grandson moved away after his death?

Yes thats the problem, I can see that Selina wasnt on that census, and then that he died but I cant seem to find any marriage for the daughter so am not sure if Don Laurent is the grandson. Also cant find a death for Selina

I think so. There is one sister of Harry Pember called Alice Beatrice and Im trying to find out if she married. There is no marriage of any Alice Beatrice Pember but there is of a Beatrice A Pember to an Archie Morgan. Not sure if that is her or not.
People seem to keep using their middle names instead of first names.

The image of the marriage of Frederick Cocroft and Maud Pember can be found on Anc...y.
The address that both parties give is 12 Pemberton Terrace. Maud's father Harry Pember, a French Polisher. Frederick is a soldier.
This same address can be found on the incoming (to England) passenger list for the 1932 trip that Maud and her daughter took. Perhaps this might help to connect a few dots.
Frederick served with the Canadian Army (CEF) in WW1. This link is to his complete digitized service record (courtesy of Library and Archives Canada). There are 33 pages. It will be very slow to download.

Im always a bit wary of using family search, I dont know how accurate it is. I rarely use it but I havent ever needed american records.
-
Ah I have just created an account on family search, I see that some of the records have images now, I literally hadnt used it for about 20 years when it was just transcriptions
So it might be, that Frederick and Selina divorced and she went and changed her name to Helen. she then married Donald Beck.
Meanwhile Doris stayed living with her father but then later married a Don Laurent, but used Beck as her maiden name instead of Cocroft?
They had one son Don Laurent, who has since died but leaves 2 living children.
How would I access the marriages to check this out, do american marriage records have the father's names on them or the mothers names of the bride and grooms?

I have now found the marriage you are refering to Sandra but I must be going blind, it looks like its transcribed wrong, it looks like it says Doris Bedler, not Beck.
Plus there are records for a Doris Beck in New York at the same time as my Doris Cocroft so now Im doubly confused about whether this is a bit of a red herring.
I cant work out why Doris Cocroft would call herself Doris Beck on marriage.

I think I will have to look into how I order some of these documents. I dont have a cheque book anymore, havent for years, didnt even know places still took them!
They dont seem to have any online ordering options!!
-
This looks like the place to order the 1945 marriage record. It deals with historical New York City marriage records. I don't know who might be qualified to order a historical record but the info is probably there somewhere.
There is various info on this linked page. The very first line says orders up to 1949 are made through DORIS. You click on the DORIS to get to the form.
https://www.cityclerk.nyc.gov/content/marriage-records
PB
Added: you have the certificate number from the index.
Another add: I don't know what parental info you would get from the record but it may be the only way forward at this point.
-
Thanks yes that is my best option at the moment
-
I was poking around in the website and it looks like anyone can order a historic marriage record (prior to 1950).
PB
-
Yes I had a quick look as best i could and it also appears they take cards as payments too, thank goodness because I have no other way of paying!!
I will email them to find out what the process is, one of the other sites quoted above seemed into indicate you can only pay by cheque if you have to do it by post, very cumbersome.
