Title: 1841 census look up please
Post by: Delphia on Friday 06 March 20 16:25 GMT (UK)
Hi

Is it possible for a look up of the 1841 census for Richmond Hill, Brighton?

Mary Welfare was buried in January 1849 aged 77.  Just wondering if she is living with her daughter Ann Leffen and family.

The only Mary Welfare I have found on the 1841 of the right age was in an Institution!

Thank you

It starts at H0107/1121 bk3 folio 29 page 16

There's a Mary Welfare (70) with, below her, another ("Philly? Billy? Dilley) aged 30 of the same surname in Chailey with the Comerford family in 1841?
The only promising one at first sight in Brighthelmstone  that I've found was down as 10 rather than 70 with a William Camber or Comber, an Artist, and his family. But when I looked the formation of the 1 can't really be mistaken for a 7, sorry. There's a rather younger woman (70) at Kempton, of the same name, with a Stanham family.

Hi

Many thanks for the replies.

Mary was christened 1771 Sevenoaks, Kent.  Daughter Ann was christened 1793 Sevenoaks, Kent.

Ann Married Thomas Bray Leffen in 1815, Brighton.

Trying the find the death of Mary, her husband John died in Kent in 1855.

Hi Keyboard86

Thanks for that.

I had seen the 1841 entry before but had discounted it.  Don't know if I'm reading the entry incorrectly but it reads to me as John and his wife Ann and son Thomas.

John's wife was Mary and as far as I am aware they did not have a son by the name of Thomas.

What do you know of Mary and John's children? The family the Mary above is lodging with in Chailey are actually called Cornford. The children have mmn Welfare, which suggests the wife Mary could potentially be a daughter of this Mary Welfare. The younger Mary was born Lindfield  c1803

Hi

Mary and John's children were Ann christened 1793, Peggy christened 1798 Harriott christened 1801, and John christened 1813 who married Ann Harris.

As far as I am aware these are the only children Mary and John had.

There is a twelve year gap between the last two children you have listed so it is highly likely that there were other children, or John may be a grandson, not a son.

OK so can you confirm the death of John Welfare was 1855 Sevenoaks aged 92 and what 1851 census you have for him?

Hi

I have the death certificate for John 8 May 1855 92 years of age Master Tailor.

The 1851 census entry (hopefully found him on) he was with the Jeffrey family aged 88.  Kemsing Street, Sevenoaks, Kent.

Not sure about who he is supposed to be the father of, certainly not William Jeffrey!  As far as I am aware he never had a daughter Sarah.  As to the Ann and Elizabeth who are listed below him as sisters??

Hi Debra

Yes there is a gap between the last two children for John and Mary, but have not come across any other children.
