Title: Arbroath birth
Post by: HmmS336 on Wednesday 11 March 20 07:56 GMT (UK)
In 1881 in a household of Frasers in Inverness the last entry is Alexander Mill aged 11 Born in Forfarshire, Arbroath his relation ship is described as nephew.  Head of the household is Alexander Fraser b1824, his wife is of a similar age so seems unlikely to be their nephew - though not impossible of course.  Two of the occupants of the household are grandchildren one of whom was born in Forfarshire Dundee.  I have the original SP entry.

In order, on the census  is head, wife, son then daughter in law, son, dau, dau, grandson, grandson, then nephew.  The grandchildren belong to the son and daughter in law.

I cannot find the birth entry for Alexander Mill - his name appears to have a wavy line underneath as if to question the spelling.  There are no Mill births that fit and the Milne births do not fit.

Anyone have suggestions??

Have you ruled out Alexander Mill (b 17 Nov 1870) in Dundee.  Father Alexander Mill, mother Margaret Gall. (looking on Family Search).

Hi

I bought that cert a long time ago and could not make it fit either - those names are not in my data base and they are clearly written on the certificate and not mistranscribed.

This family are in Midlothian in 1881 census - father Alexander is born in crieff that matches up with the family in 1871in Dundee.  He is also a shoe maker in both census and the birth certificate,  I think i can rule them out.

Thank you for the reply.

Edited to add - family are Mills in 1881.

Could be a great nephew. Nephew also originally meant grandson, and I have found it still used like that in 19th century censuses.

Have you considered the possibility that Alexander Mill is an illegitimate son of a sister of Alexander Fraser, registered as Fraser, or of a sister of his wife Rebecca Chisholm, registered as Chisholm?

For example Alexander Reid Chisholm, son of Christina Chisholm, born in Arbroath on 22 March 1870?

I note that Rebeka Chisholm, daughter of Hugh Chisholm and Mary Stewart, baptised in Kiltarlity in 1828, had a sister Christy, baptised in 1832.

GR2 - could be a possibitly - thanks

Forfarian - good thinking initially discounted the siblings as thinking too old.  Christy the youngest sister i have of Rebecca was baptised  1832 - so is in the frame at 38.  I shall investigate.

ooops sorry, did not read you last paragraph before answering!!

Forfarian

I have just got the birth cert of Alexander Chisholm - there was an RCE attached naming William Mill as the father - it is difficult to read but I shall persevere.

Thank you - I had spotted this birth before but the Reid middle name made me discount it!

Thank you for your help

update on Christy - she died in 1877 aged 43.
She had worked in the jute Mills

A daughter signed the death cert.

Excellent! :)

If you have trouble reading anything from SP you can ask them for a clearer scan.

I am following on with this family and noted that the death cert was signed by a daughter Margaret.

I have found a birth for Margaret Ann daughter of Christina Chisholm b 1862 in Angus.  This would make mean that she was only just 15 at the death registration.

Would her age have not been questioned when she registered the death.  Have I got the wrong Margaret.
