Title: Coronavirus - FutureLearn course
Post by: Gillg on Wednesday 11 March 20 17:03 GMT (UK)
FutureLearn is running a course entitled COVID-19: Tackling the novel Coronavirus.  You may be interested in learning more (on the other hand you may feel you've heard enough already).  It's free, lasts 4 weeks and starts on March 23rd.

I know that quite a few RootsChatters, myself included, take part in all kinds of FutureLearn courses.  They are mostly excellent and, of course, free, but have you noticed that they seem to have adopted a hard sell approach lately?  Nearly every time I open my computer there is a message from "Lily at FutureLearn" inviting me to take part in a course or to upgrade the course I have recently followed.

Stay positive ;)
My daughter has just announced that she won't be visiting me till it's safe to do so, so we should communicate by Facetime, Skype or some such.  Good job we have got plenty of toilet rolls in, then. :D

I've already signed up for it!

Btw, - just nipped out to Waitrose here, and it was busier than Christmas! Loads of empty shelves, - no toilet rolls whatsoever... (Someone's sitting on them somewhere:-)

Lydart,  Thank you for that. Always refreshing to see it. I'm in good health, but I don't have to try very hard to think of several family and friends who would probably not survive this.

Actually, I say I'm in good health, but 48 hours ago I bent down to get some cheese out of the fridge and something went at the base of my spine and I am in extreme pain at the moment. I suppose it counts as self isolation.

Martin  ....   we're all getting older !    I'll bet the average age of Rootschatters is WELL over 60  .... FH is an oldies hobby !!

The government says if we are over 60, we are vulnerable to this virus; yet, they also say we are fit to work until we are 68 !

Although meant for health professionals, the WHO has 4 modules free to access online that only take a couple of hours to complete and this one looks suitable for you all - https://openwho.org/courses/eprotect-acute-respiratory-infections

Apparently my local Morrison's was absolutely packed out today, didn't bother myself,  but unless I am being thick what has toilet rolls got to do with the virus

Normally I have at least 6/8 and then I buy another packet, years ago as a child I remember having a toilet in the back garden, newspaper was threaded on a string and hung up, I would take a torch with me and was often annoyed because what I wanted to catch up on was already gone, in those days it would appear you could put news paper down the loo, not nowadays though .

My sincere apologies for this - BUT isn't it a bit late to be learning about Coronavirus commencing 23 March?  We've had it in this country since late January - TWO months ago!

And as for the toilet roll scandal - again, maybe I've got it wrong but I understood that self-isolation was for 14 days.  How many toilet rolls do you need to last 14 days in the average family?  :o :o

All these people stockpiling for whatever reason, and we all know that items will be disposed of by the majority, when they reach their "sell by" date.  :-*  :-X

And then we have this from Erato today - has the whole world gone mad?  They're certainly all beginning (or continuing) to panic  ::)

There are a lot of jokes going around as to why people are buying all the toilet rolls - most too rude to put on here.  ;D

It's here...it's not going away any time soon and we all have to just take a bit more care of ourselves when out in public...wear gloves, use the hand sanitiser in public buildings when it's available, but soap and water has been around for much longer and it does the job!
My uncle would say..."I survived two world wars and i'm still here, I'll take my chance"  ;D ;D
Take Care everyone, lock up your loo rolls and don't panic and if you are unlucky enough to have to self isolate, there is always Rootschat  ;)

My sons a nurse and they are having to lock masks away because they're being stolen, likewise hand sanitiser from the end of beds which is being 'nicked' by patients families. Daughter works in a different hospital and the hand sanitiser is being taken from there too. Words fail me.

The same is happening in my local hospital, they are actually ripping them out of the walls, disgusting in my opinion

This is certainly bringing out the worst in people - the stockpiling which isn't necessary and is leaving those who are vulnerable without things. People going to A&E or the doctors with symptoms rather than calling for advice as we are told to, which then means that place has to be deep cleaned and now stealing from places where there are people who are already sick.

Stay calm, and keep on keeping on !

Stealing stuff from a hospital is just appalling; the people who do it, should be barred from using the hospital if and when they get the bug.

The most difficult part of the advice is not to touch your face. It's very good advice, I'm sure.

In practice it's an almost impossible task. Itches need to be scratched, moustaches need twiddling (for us chaps), beards sometimes need stroking (whilst in contemplation), ears get itchy at times, and eyes can sometimes need a rub.

With the talk about stockpiling, things in Australia are just as mad.

Had a visit from our daughter today. She went to the shops, and found, just as everywhere, the toilet paper and tissue isle empty :o :o

Also, in the pasta isle, most of the pasta had been emptied, but the kidney bean and chickpea pastas were still there. :o :o

As they are the pastas she wanted, no problem

My granddaughter arrived on my doorstep on Wednesday night, they had run out of toilet paper and couldn’t find any.  Fortunately I had picked up some at my local Coles on Monday, so I could share.
The empty shelves everywhere are ridiculous.

It's about common sense.

More people a year die from normal flu or other illnesses.

Let's face it … it's a good day to bury bad news  ;)

14 days isolation for a family of 4 or above would require quite a few toilet rolls - especially as many people use a toilet roll as tissues for a heavy cold (much cheaper & more practical than a box of them) so I feel maybe we (including me at first  ::) ) are being a bit harsh on the hoarders  ;D

Also - if you self-isolate for 14 days because you might have symptoms but don't actually have the virus, when you emerge you could then catch the virus & have to do it all over again - nobody seems to have thought we might all need several periods of isolation.

Plus if us oldies are advised not to go out anyway while the outbreak lasts.....

Not sure if another aspect has been covered here. Only way 'herd immunity' can be achieved, is to let the virus run it's course. Govts.are trying to flatten out the curve of infection so the medical services can cope.

I can vaguely remember being very ill with 'Asian Flu' in 1957.

I wonder if that's given me any immunity?

According to the gentleman/scientist yesterday no one has any immunity to it which is why it is such a problem

For much of my career, now over, I was involved in what was known as large-scale consumer logistics, basically ensuring that the major retailers never suffered any periods of empty shelves. That is very costly to them so they will go to great investment to avoid it happening. The two main concepts were just in time delivery, which involved having very large out-of-town warehouses, typically close to motorway junctions that could be used to replenish stocks at short notice, during promotions or during any sort of disruption to manufacture. The other concept was vendor managed inventory. This entails retailers providing their sales information to their suppliers so that suppliers could then be responsible for ensuring correct deliveries. If this short scale panic buying causes any disruption, then 10 years of my career will have been in vain. If people panic buy today, they won't be doing it again, it's a one-off event, the infrastructure of retail is designed to avoid this happening.

Wear your gloves in public places ;)
Carol

Carol,

I don't understand how wearing gloves in public places can help anybody. It doesn't stop you from touching your face whilst walking about (unless you wear boxing gloves, or oven mitts). Also, if you don't use disposable gloves then there probably isn't a way to clean gloves effectively.

The whole thing about washing hands thoroughly isn't to protect your hands, it's to protect the rest of your body that you might touch with your hands.

That's my understanding anyhow.

They are very different viruses so no. 'Asian flu' of 1957-8 was influenza A subtype H2N2, covid 19 is [as we all know  ;D] a coronavirus. Covid 19 is undoubtedly going to mutate, like the influenza virus does, so exposure now may not confer immunity to a new variety in the future.

If I run out of toilet paper then it's newspaper on a string as discussed before or the bidet [knew it would come in handy one day].
