Title: Steeds and McMurrans
Post by: danielok on Thursday 12 March 20 19:36 GMT (UK)
Could someone tell me about Catherine Steeds family?

Catherine Steed was born in 1901 to John Steed and Agnes McMurran?

Catherine married William Samson around the early 1920's and they had 4 girls, 1 boy and twins who died at birth. They were born between 1923 to 1937. These children were, Elizabeth, Christine, Reena, Jeane, James and the twins werent named.

Catherine died in 1980 at 79.

If you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can view Catherine's birth certificate and the marriage certificate of her parents - they were married in Kilmarnock in 1900. You can also look at the 1911 census and see what siblings she had by then, where and when her parents were born and her father's occupation.

Scotland's People is pay-per-view but modestly priced.

Have a look at Catherine’s parents marriage record for more information.
Catherine married William Samson in 1923, Anderston.

1911 census on Scotlands People (see reply #1)
Parents marriage record can be obtained from Scotlands People (again details given in reply #1)

Check surname spelling - it could be STEAD

Hi Daniel

Can I ask whether you have viewed the marriage cert of Catherine to William Samson in 1923?

I ask because there is another marriage for a Catherine in 1921 also in Glasgow to a Robert Scobie.

A Catherine Kerr Steed other surname Scobie died in 1989 in Maybole Ayrshire. Her mother's maiden name is indexed as McMarran.

There are two Catherine Kerr Stead/Steed (spelling seem to vary, best search on SP as ST*D maybe). This second one I think this is the one who married William Samson in 1923.

Her death entry shows her as Catherine Kerr Stead, other surname Samson. Mother's maiden name OWENS. Entry shows in Galston in 1979, Catherine aged 78.

There are 3 possible birth entries in Ayrshire at the right time:

Catherine Kerr Steed/ Stead

1901 - 598/48 Kilmaurs
1901 - 597/757 Kilmarnock (Ayr)
1902 - 597/512 Kilmarnock (Ayr)

The Catherine that married William Samson, this might be her parents' marriage:

James Steed and Elizabeth OWENS married 1896 in Kilmaurs.

Daniel, I think you need to start with confirming the details of Catherine's parents from her 1923 marriage.

The names given to Catherine's children suggest her parents might have been James and Elizabeth.
I agree with Monica - you need to look at her marriage record for names of her parents and then we can look some more.

Daniel, you have a subs to Ancestry? You mentioned doing searches on it.

I think this is your Catherine with her family in 1901. I think her age will likely read 1 month not 1 year on the original image.

James Stead 26 Colliery Pitheadman b. Wishaw Lanarkshire
Elizabeth Stead 25
John Stead 3
Elizabeth Stead 2
Catherine Stead 1

Address: Bogside Cottage, Kilmaurs Ayrshire

There is a family tree which you can access with a subs here www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/69322917/person/212100159647/facts

They give Catherine's birth as being on 13 March 1901 Bogside Couírt (likely will read Cottage as we have in 1901), Crosshouse, Ayrshire.

Her burial details are on www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch?DetsView=Summary&src=ext&fileid=4205195

Burial Register summary

Catherine Kerr Stead
Burial date 15 June 1979
Location East Ayrshire

Re Catherine's 1911 census entry, I think she is Kilmaurs, showing as:

CATHERINE STEAD
10
598/ 7/ 1
Kilmaurs
Ayr

Hmm, I have a birth certificate of Catherine Kerr Stead and I comfrimed with her daughter (my great grandma) that her middle name was Kerr, it said the parents were called john steed and agnes mcmurran. I got that from my friends computer on Scotlandspeople, she could have died in 1979, also no I don't have a sub on Ancestry though from her birth certificate I think what you, monica got may be wrong because on her parents marriage certificate they were both 21 meaning they would have been born in 1879/8, her parents were married May 7 1900

As has already been pointed out, there were at least two Catherine Kerr Steed/Steads of similar age.

You say you have a birth certificate of one of them, but how do you know she is the right one?

I see a marriage of a John Steed to Catherine Kerr in Dalmellington in 1872.

They had a son James, born in 1874 in Cambusnethan, who is an exact match for the 26-year-old James Stead in the 1901 census.

They also had a son John, born 1878/9, who could have been 21 on 7 May 1900 when John Steed and Agnes McMurran were married.

So your two Catherine Kerr Steed/Steads are almost certainly first cousins, both named after their grandmother, and you need to sort out which cousin was the wife of William Samson.

Noting that William Samson and Catherine Kerr Stead/Steed named their first daughter Elizabeth does rather suggest that William Samson's wife was the daughter of James Steed/Stead and Elizabeth Owens rather than of John Stead/Steed and Agnes McMurran.

As does the evidence of the deaths indexes which has already been quoted.

And forget about Ancestry. Go for the original documents on Scotland's People just to make sure that what is on Ancestry wasn't put there by someone who hadn't bothered to do the basic research properly.

James Stead/Steed and wife Elizabeth (plus family) are in Kilmaus in the 1901 and the 1911 census.

John Stead/Steed and wife Agnes are in Kilmarnock in the 1901 census, but I have not found them in 1911 census in Scotland.

You do need to sort out which cousin is "your" Catherine.

Given the death indexes, it is clear with the additional detail on mother's maiden name, which Catherine Kerr Steed/Stead married whom. The marriage or death regs for your Catherine are what you need to check now for final verification. The marriage reg is available to view on online on SP.

You know that your Catherine married William Samson so it is pretty straightforward to confirm her details.

There is a Catherine on deceasedonline and this Catherine died in 1980, which my grandpa told me.
This says her middle name is Elizabeth which could of came from her mother, Elizabeth if that is her mothers name, and John Steeds parents on the marriage certificate to Agnes McMurran are as says John Steed and Catherine Steed maiden name Kerr.

Alright I think I have figured out a bit of the confusion, you see Catherine Steeds (b. 1901) daughter was Reena, her name on this grave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/128892577/catherine-kerr-samson is Catherine Kerr Samson but then the family members are how they are related to Catherine Kerr Steed (b. 1901).

Never mind DeceasedOnline and FindaGrave for the moment. They are only making you even more confused.

Concentrate on Scotland's People.

Check the death indexes:
Catherine Kerr Stead or Samson, 78, mother's surname Owens, died in Galston in 1979
Catherine Kerr Steed or Scobie, 88, mother's surname McMarran, died in Maybole in 1989

and view the relevant marriage certificates:
Robert Scobie to Catherine Stead in Glasgow Blythswood in 1921
William Samson to Catherine Stead in Glasgow Anderston in 1923

Good. So you're not looking for Steeds and McMurrans after all, you are looking for Steads and Owens. You're on the right track now.

So "your" Catherine’s parents are James Steed and Elizabeth Owens who married in Kilmaurs in 1896.

In the 1901 census for Kilmaurs: James is 26 years, a Colliery Pit head man (born Wishaw, Lanarkshire), Elizabeth is 25 years (born Kilmaurs), and they have children: John 3 yrs, Elizabeth 2 yrs, Catherine 1 – probably 1 month.

In the 1911 census for Kilmaurs: James is 36 and Elizabeth is 34. Children: John 13, Elizabeth 12, Catherine 10, Jane 7, Margaret 4, William 2.

James Stead was born 2 June 1874 in Wishaw Lanarkshire- birth registered Cambusnethan. His parents were John Steed (born about 1852 Ayrshire) and Catherine Kerr (born about 1852 Ireland) who married in 1872 in Dalmellington. The other children after 1st born James are: Thomas born about 1876, John born about 1879, Charles born about 1881, Ellen born about 1883, William born about 1887. The census shows James as a colliery worker.

Elizabeth Owens was born 1876 Kilmaurs. Her parents were William Owens (born about 1841 Kilmarnock) and Elizabeth Ross (born about 1845 Ayr). William Owens and Elizabeth Ross married 1871 Ayr. William Owens also worked at the colliery, as an engine man – he died 13 Oct 1918 Kilmarnock.

That'd be right, because my great gran elizabeth's middle name was owens which would probably have been taken from elizabeth owens.
