Title: Wiltshire Assizes - Abbott OSBORN
Post by: Kylie Watson on Friday 13 March 20 03:10 GMT (UK)
Hello there, this is my first time posting.. I never even knew this existed!

I am hoping someone might be able to help find out about one of my convict ancestors. For the life of me, I cannot find out what he was charged with. I will include the information I do have below:

Name: Abbott Osborn (spelling of his name has been found to vary to "Abbot, Osborne and Osbourne" and even in one record his name was incorrectly transcribed as "Robert".

Abbott was born c.1783 and was convicted on or around the 8th March 1800. He was sentenced for a life term and was transported on the Earl Cornwallis in late 1800, arriving in June 1801.

I am interested in particular as to what he was convicted for but also any information you are able to find from the record (ie. place of residence, recorded age at the time etc that might be able to verify any information I have for him). I would be extremely grateful for any assistance. Thank you.

Regards

Kylie

Just added Wiltshire Family History Society - info (re CD) onto  my previous message.
There must be someone who has this CD -

Also mentions Summary convictions....

The Contributor re the prison record/marriage belongs to FindMyPast.  Wiltshire marriages etc are also on Ancestry.

From "London Packet or New Evening Post", March 12, 1800 - March 14, 1800

"ASSIZES
At Salisbury Assizes, Henry alias Harry Boulter, aged 38 for murder of William Dench, Mr. Wiltshire's waggoner; and Abbot Osborne, aged 18, for a robbery at Swindon, received sentence of death. ..."

The Wiltshire OPC  do not have the baptisms and burials for Wroughton but they do have the marriages. It was from there that I took the marriage of Thomas & Anne.
Ancestry have images of the original Wiltshire parish records, hopefully including Wroughton but I do not have a subscription.
Also of interest would be the marriage dated; 28-Feb-1767 of Abbot Osborn, widower, of Wroughton to Jane Phillips, [Sp] of Wroughton. by licence.

**Please disregard this message I thought I was posting on my post for the Wiltshire lookup.**

Thank you  :) You can only have so many subscriptions, I have a paid subscription for Ancestry but after being led "up the garden path" I am reluctant to add information with being to cross-reference it against something I know to be already correct and clearly you are obviously more adept at Ancestry than I am. Is there a chance the Baptisms at Wroughton and Christchurch Swindon could be a duplication of the one record or for different families?.

In case you're interested, £40 in 1800 was worth about £1760 (in 2017) (or $3500 AUD) - so quite a bit!

You probably already know, but it looks like he was in a bit of trouble in Sydney, NSW again in 1849:

The marriages for Abbott Osborn in 1768 don't seem to fit (??) All of the convict records estimate his year of birth as being circa. 1782.

I thoroughly appreciate you taking your time to help me with this. It's getting late here but I will check back tomorrow and go through all the information. Thanks to you both.

They say that, but they also say it was 266 days (9 months) wages for a skilled tradesman, so in today's terms that would be around £20,000.  If you look at purchasing power in terms of beer or housing, I think it would be considerably more.

That's true! In any case, a substantial amount ... not surprising it was such a severe sentence. (Not that I approve of capital punishment in any form.)

Wow.. when you put it that way, I can understand why his sentence is more severe than others.. Although I hardly feel a "life sentence" is warranted. Thanks for the perspective.

This was just an earlier marriage (1767) where Mary FAIRTHORNE was a witness

Elizabeth OSBOURNE daughter the base born of Ann FAIRTHORN

Up until the 1929 Marriage Act, Females could marry at 12 and Males at 14 years of age - with consent.

Thanks JM. I'm aware of the NSW State archives, I've searched those one's before. I was trying to work out how to access the British Newspaper archives, which I've noticed maddys52 has commented with below. I'm really wanting to try to find the information on what he was charged with. I have previously found a transcription on the Assizes for another convict ancestor of mine, I was hoping to find something similar for Abbott.

The Wiltshire Family History Society

http://www.wiltshirefhs.co.uk

have produced a CD of Marriage Licence Bonds  (Sarum Diocese Marriage Bonds 1609-1837)

I just bought this from the Berks FHS.  Be warned - it's almost unusable.  It can only be used if the CD is actually in the drive, and of course most laptops and notebooks no longer have a CD drive.

I was planning to copy it on to my laptop, as I have done with other discs such as Berks Marriage Index (copyright allows this for your personal use), but it isn't possible.

It's also very poorly put together.  You can only search by bride, groom, or bondsman, and you can't browse by year or place.  And it's not easy to read.  It's all presented in closely-typed lines with no columns, and looks as if it was typed up in about 1965.

I paid £15 for this and feel well ripped off.

Hi Sloe Gin,

I see your problem is that you can't play the CD. Do you still have access to  CD player that you could connect to your computer?

If you do,  and I agree most PCs don't have disk players these days,  so I invested in an Apple DVD player mainly because I have built up a collection of disks on CD from various FHS - If only more of them allowed E-downloads that would alleviate this problem.

I bought this CD from the Wilts FHS a few years ago and was able to open it using MS Excel. However, assuming yours is the same as mine,  I was able to drag the files over to my home folder (ancestry records) on my iMac. I do that with all my disks so don't have to keep installing a CD.

Thanks, Alan.  I tried something like that, but as I don't have MS Office installed it didn't work.
The whole thing is so shoddily put together.  It looks like something out of the 1960s, and the installation instructions must have been written about 20 years ago!  I might just return it and ask for a refund.  I wouldn't mind paying a fiver for it but I expect better for £15.

I just thought I'd warn anyone reading this thread, since it was mentioned here.

Sloe Gin.. if you use Gmail or Google Chrome, there is a free, Open Source alternative to Microsoft Excel called Google Sheets.

You can even download it here:
https://www.google.com.au/sheets/about/

I wouldn't discount the CD, although it's User Interface isn't as pretty or doesn't look/work as seamless as others you may have used, there may be valuable information on there you've been looking for.

Thanks, Kylie.  I use Open Office which is a similar open source, and normally have no problems opening MS Office documents, but this CD only seems to recognise Office.
The point being that it should be easily transferable to a modern device, but it is not.
