Can anyone advise me if the Landesarchiv NRW has copies of the Adreßbücher for Gelsenkirchen and for Dortmund 1900-1905 inclusive? I am interested in members of the Faust family in both these cities and can't find the books for any of these years on line.

I worked in Germany for 3 years 1979-1981 - I passed through Gelsenkirchen - I don't want to dampen your hopes - but it was flattened in WW2 - Probably one of the most bombed cities in Germany - records prior to 1944 may have been destroyed - do you have a particular name - dob - pob and we can see if someone has a familytree for them - you may be lucky - Kirchen is Deutch for church :)
1900 residence - for some reason NO ages given and NO places of birth - just resident in Dortmund - the only one I could find - very strange

Thanks Gartonite. Yes, Gelsenkirchen and the Ruhrgebiet was well and truly flattened. My late mother was sent away as a refugee with her school to Bavaria during the war.
Where did you find this 1900 residence information?
Following a lead from davecapps (thanks again) the Dortmund Adreßbuch 1900 lists a completely different set of Fausts
For years I have been trying to find out what happened to my great grandfather Johann(es) Faust b1869 in Gelsenkirchen who may have been murdered in about 1904, possibly during a trip to the USA, though he didn't emigrate there permanently. According to my Grandfather's marriage record his deceased father lived most recently in Dortmund but despite trawling through endless death registrations in Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen around 1904 I have been unable to find anything. Every now and then I try a different angle.
This time I'm trying to find evidence of where Johann, his wife Wilhelmine and their children might have been living between 1900 and 1905 which might indicate when and where Johann disappears from the records so I can at least narrow the date and place down in what was a heavily populated area.

He married Wilhelmine Kaprolat (*1869) in September 1889 in Gelsenkirchen. In 1919 she was living in Heinrichstraße in Dortmund.

No, it isn't. I was led astray a couple of years ago by Wilhelmine Emma Olga Kaprolat who is probably related to my Wilhelmine Kaprolat (who doesn't seem to have any other Christian names) but was born in Dortmund whereas my Wilhelmine was definitely born in Insterburg in Ostpreußen.
