Not sure about deaths in Tenerife, but you might find out some dates/info if she left a will.

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Make sure you have the page 1996 to present open.

You could apply online for a death crtificate from Registry office of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
https://www.certificadodefuncion.org/certificado-de-defuncion/

Google translated - https://www.certificadodelregistrocivil.es/certificados-registro-civil-tenerife

Have you also cehecked if the death was registered as an overseas uk death - they could have done that, but would have cost extra. Not sure if it also applied to Scotish people though.

See https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/birth-death-and-marriage-records/minor-records
and https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/birth-death-and-marriage-records/statutory-registers-of-births-deaths-and-marriages

Consular deaths are included in the Scottish statutory deaths indexes BUT deaths that occurred less than 50 years ago are not published online. You would need to check the printed index.

I have tried a search in spanish papers, but there was only mention of a coach crash where 2 Scottish women died in Sept 2004 in Las Palmas. Doesn't appear to have been anything either related to drownings or violence. Car crashes and helicopter crashes caused a number of deaths.

Hi
If you have a Find My Past subscription you should find it on there. If not (as it is expensive) Go to Manchester Central Library (think that they are close at the mo because of the virus,so you may have to hold on a while.) Or ,if someone with a subscription will be kind enough to look for you.
Only reason I know this is that I spent several frustrating months looking for someone only to find that they has died in Tunis, so no record here! Other thing is if you could find their next of kin and they are still living write to them or (as someone has suggested) obtain a copy of their next of kin's will and write to one of the beneficiary's
Good Luck
Josie

I cannot see any other way for your friend to get a copy of her mum's death cert other than ordering unfortunately. There is a cost (38.72 Euros plus postage) when ordering it online from the link Sam put up earlier. Ordering it online is straightforward to do, having looked at the form.

I think this service is being offered by a third party is conjuction with the Spanish registry offices.

Having looked at the relevant registry office www.registrocivil.es/info/santa-cruz-de-tenerife/santa-cruz-de-tenerife/ it seems to be more expensive to order through them directly :-\ 45 euros plus postage it seems.

Josie, you mentioned Find My Past for records. I can only see the data set 'British Armed Forces And Overseas Deaths And Burials', Madrid, Spain. Not many there for this period of 2004 (56 results).

oldhippyone, Find My Past is free to register on. You could do a name search to see if anything shows maybe?

Monica

Thanks Monica.  As I live in Manchester it was easy for me to go into the family history section ( Closed at the moment) and print off the details of my Tunis death from there. I also got a copy of his widows will from the probate office (£3) and wrote to the main beneficiary.
Overseas deaths are a bit of a challenge!

You could contact the Eglish forum (link I gave you in last post)

You could also contact English online paper which may be able to help. Can only search recent editions online, but you could send them an email and ask).

I have looked again, but nothing. Quite a number of balcony deaths in Los Cristianos and other parts of mainland Spain.

If you want I can try, but obviously need more details.

As I have mentioned to you via PM, Spanish death certs will not include cause of death. They are very comprehensive in terms of many particulars relating to the deceased, including burial/cremation details but do not include cause of death.

Cause of death is included in the Certificate of Death at the time the death is verified by a doctor and this certificate is issued to be given the registrars. Very much like we have in this country, referred to the Green Form. In the UK there can be no registration or burial without it.

Your friend, not surprisingly, I would imagine wants to find out the details surrounding her mother's death. The only source may be to investigate how to try to source a copy of the inquest report in Tenerife. Not sure how easy this will be to be honest. This area can become super complicated.

But you need to start somewhere and getting a copy of her mother's death certificate is the way to start. There is no reason why your friend can't send a letter to the relevant Register Office. Sam, do you know which one? There are a number on the Island. At least 2 in Los Cristianos:

    Juzgado (Registro Civil)
    Avenida Juan Carlos
    Telephone: 922 787860

    Oficina Registro Civil
    Avenida Chayofita
    Telephone: 922 747300

Monica

PS: A copy of the death certificate should be free when ordered direct for the registrar.

This is the link which I sent you the other day which is a great aide if you are filling out the electronic order form:

https://thegenealogycorner.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/how-to-order-a-spanish-death-certificate-from-the-spanish-registry-office.pdf

Taking on board the key details that should be included on any request for a copy of a death reg, these are the details your friend should consider including in her letter with her request. More info is required because she does not have a copy of the death cert or the references for it:

Full name of her mother, including maiden name.
Her maternal grandparents' full names
Her dad's full details
When and where her mother was born

What details she has on her mother's death. Death, date, place etc.

The fact that her mother was cremated on the Island

Your friend's full details to include:

Her full name
Correspondence address
Telephone number, including international dialing code for the UK
Email address if she has one
Passport number and where/when issued.

She needs to state:

That she would like the Certificate to be posted to her to the address she has given

That she would like a 'literal' copy of the Certificate. This is a stamped photocopy of the original certificate

We are on hand to help where we can  :) I am bilingual with Spanish and can help with any translations, although I think dealing with Tenerife, many people speak English fluently really.

That is great, Sam. Well done for stepping in  :)

Just to also add. I did do a search on Newsbank for any newspaper stories at that time. This includes Scottish papers like the Daily Record in the right year, but failed to find something. Not conclusive that there is nothing there, just I couldn't find anything  :-[

Nothing in the Herald either - www.heraldscotland.com/search/?search=dingley&sort=relevance&headline_only=false&site_id[]=308&posted_date=custom&posted_date_from=&posted_date_to=&p=2&pp=20

The Carluke and Lanark Gazettes might be two titles to try with the Carnwath location. Nothing on line for them for then but your friend would need to check in the reference library nearby for microfilm copies of older issues. Likely libraries are closed currently??

I have used the Lanark Library archive services before re a search for someone on RootsChat www.whatsonlanarkshire.co.uk/listings/lanark-library/

I know that they hold back copies on microfilm for the Carluke Gazette (likely the Lanark Gazette too). You could try making phone or email enquiries?  You have the date of Margaret Dingley's death to narrow down any searches.

Whilst libraries are shut to the public, they may well be open for email and phone enquiries? You would need to check.

I filled in the online form for the office I thought would be the most likely, since it woud have been the closest, but I guess it does depend on the company that would have dealt with the formalities, since they would have probably registered the death. In my personal experience of a death on mainland Spain, the funeral directors dealt with it all, but unfortunately some of the information they provided the registrar was actually incorrect. I'm trying to find if there's an email address for the crematorium most likely to have been used in the North (since there wasn't one in the South then), but again from my experience, the crematorium we dealt with was totally insensitive and disinterested when dealing with us.

I have found  records dating back as far as 2004, but nothing relating to Margaret. It is rather strange, considering there were numerous balcony falls reported. Her ashes could have been scattered at La Laguna. You apparently need a licence to scatter ashes, but one isn't required there and they have a "garden of ashes". Well lets hope the crematorium company will be helpful. I will try the other regisrty office and maybe the one in Madrid if that fails.

I don't know if any of this helps ,, but I ask another question , if she died over there shouldn't her death still be registard on scotlands people and show in the search results ??

Hi Oldhippyone

If Scotland's Registration system is the same as England and Wales, then it would also be possible to register an overseas death in Scotland as well as in Tenerife, but, when my father died in Spain, we didn't bother doing it, because we saw no point at the time and is also cost an extra £70 as far as I remember.

I had another response from a Registry office today and Margaret's death was not registered there as far as they can tell, but they are looking again. Since they emailed me, I was able this time to ask them if they have any suggestions as to which Registry office to try next, otherwise it's a hit and miss thing, so I'm hoping they may be a bot more understanding and helpful than they were at the Santa Cruz Registry Office.

I tried contacting one crematorium I thought that might be a possible, but haven't had any response sadly to my communications. I know you say the sisters traveled a long way on what was like a motorway to collect Margaret's ashes and I know it's difficult to remember with the shock at the time, but do they have any idea about how long they traveled for - 1 hour, 2 hours 3 hours  etc; which could help narrow down the crematorium at least and then I cam try and contact them too.

From the Aiport in the South the main airport. Nowhere as a main destination on a motorway is more than one hour away and that is the capital Puerto de la cruz.
The two main crematoria in Tenerife are at Candelaria and close to the North airport at Santa cruz de Tenerife. They are both run by a company called Servisa with offices in Guaza phone number is 0034-922 169157.

If you would like to pm me and will point you to a good one, sited around the southern part of Tenerife. I know that there is one Notario Publico, that helps people with enquiries and Spanish speakers are on there too.

Oldhippyone - Do the sisters remember anything about the crematorium and how long after their mother's cremation did they fly back - can they remember ?

Two weeks seems a long time to wait before they were allowed to see Margaret. It doesn't sound to me that they had help from the consulate or funeral directors, in what would have been quite a traumatic experience not to mention possible language difficulties.

Dyingout's suggestion about the hospital does sound like a likely match, being out in the wilds with nothing else around.

I would suggest Margaret was kept in a morgue (tanatorio) until the time of her cremation. There are a number on the island such as this one on the north of the island www.memora.es/centro/tanatorio-memora-tenerife (photos of this one show it to have glass fronted walls, see photo below).

The death cert still remain key to try to unravel this further  :-\

Thead getting long and can't remember if this has been asked...

Has your friend considered contacting the British Consulate on the island? They can be contacted by phone or email. Naturally, there should not be a language barrier.  Certainly need help with working with the authorities in Tenerife to re establish the facts and obtain the relevant documents.

Sam, you have been doing a great job here  :)

Maybe worth trying again?

I would have thought the bulk of employees there would be English speaking as they are there to assist the British in Tenerife.

Monica an Oldhippyone - I will try the consulate, tomorrow, but it doesn't sound like  they may have been involved to me. I had to visit the consulate myself when my father died and they were very helpful, even in getting a postmortem certificate a year after the hospital had promised to send a copy (when they did the postmortem practically a few hour after he died).

I've tried emailing a crematorium, but their online system captia anti-robot link is not working to allow messages to be sent. Apart from the tantorio that Monica suggests there is likely to be one also at a place about 50 minutes away from los Cristianos, next to the cemetery. This building has lots of glass and there is a crematorium I think on site. It could give the impression that it was out of the way as far as habitation is concerned, so I wondered about this one 50 minutes away from Los Cristianos at Santa Lastenia-

In the 16 yrs since Margaret's death, the area surrounding the building your friend went to view her mum may not look the same. Continued building may make the immediate area seem different. Hopefully something in the buildings themselves may trigger a memory.

Emailed the consul via Monica's link. Had a very nice and swift response, telling me how to find a birth in the UK and via the Foreign registered UK deaths!

I've sent another response, but it seems likely they will be of no use. I have asked for a direct email address to the consul in Tenerife, so hoping they will at least do that if nothing else.

AS Monica says, things could look a lot different with more buildings since 2004.

I'm waiting to see if the Arona registry office will have done any more checking at their own (and hopefully) other offices. I'll give them a week. Maybe in that time there may also be someone via the facebook page, actually living in Tenerife, who might be in a better position to be able to help. We can only keep trying, but it might take some time.

Hi oldhippyone

The good news is ............the last Regsitry office I contacted have located the registration of death!!!

I will have to re-apply via the official internet site, using the references they have sent me, so we will have to wait a bit longer for a copy.

I wrote them an email explaining the date may have been incorrect or the name may have been spelled differently and they very kindly did a wider search.

However, don't get too excited. If the certificates are the same as was when my father died, then the death certificate won't unfortunately tell us the cause of death. However, we will at least have a date and other information that can help in accessing other information which can hopefully help us find that out.

I did also email our Govt consulate service using the link Monica kindly supplied in one of the posts. Unfortunately they said they were not authorised to help us, and sent a few suggestions that included dealing with bereavement and English speaking lawyers and suggested I continue to follow it up with the local authorities in Tenerife.

I will re-apply today for the certificate and see what happens. It may be relatively quick now they have actually found it.

Going back to the photos, I did come across a building with a tall round tower at the entrance, which could be a contender from Jane's description, but i haven't managed to find it again!

Oldhippyone

It is possible to get an international death certificate, needed usually for dealing with legalities back home following a death, since it doesn't need to be translated and is accepted as proof of death when someone has died overseas.

However, I can't get a decent enough image online to compare an international multilingual one with the literal Spanish only certificate. It looks to me like there is less information on the international one. So I am going to ask for a literal Spanish certificate, to try and get the most information possible.

Sam, this is a standard modern death certificate www.certificados.pro/DefuncionModerno.pdf

4 main sections to it. Maybe minor variations by province/area:

1. Details on deceased:

Info such as full name, age, where born, parents' names, usual residence.

2. Details of the death:

Where and when the death took place. Details on where the burial or cremation will take place.

3. Informant:

Who reported the death to the registrar. Not always family. This can be done by the funeral director for example.

4. Confirmation of Death:

Doctor who issued the certificate of death.

The certificate - well actually certificates, have arrived, but I've placed them in Covid -19 quarantine for a few days after having a brief look at the essential details.

I filled in one form but emailed them to ask if there was any chance of having both the literal (In Spanish - as described by MonicaL)and also the international version which is multilingual but has only the basic facts so Oldhippuone would have an English version. I knew it would take a couple of weeks, so after waiting patiently, I was pleasantly surprised to have about 3 copies of each after asking or 1. They have been so helpful at the registro civil office at Arona, they've really gone that extra mile.

However......as expected, there are sadly no details about Margaret's cause of death, but at least it confirms the time and date as being 5th January 2004. The cremation was to take place at the Tanatoria Servisa (does not state which one - there were 2 - one at Santa Cruz and the other at La Laguna. So now that we have a confirmed death date, I've contacted Servisa to see if they have any copies or details of the medical death certificate that was necessary to register Margaret's death and if they know whether her ashes were scattered at the crematorium (only just seeing your last post about possibly having brought them home). I'll see what they say (hopefully they'll get the email and respond) before I make further inquiries.

I'll look more closely at the other details on the certificates on Thursday, but I think it just gives the local legal directive followed and names of 2 people (not sure yet who they are though).

Oldhippyone I'm sending you a Personal message and I'll see if I can send the certificates to you via the rootschat personal message system in a few days once they're out of quarantine.

Oldhippyone- Time of death was 20:30. I've sent you a transcript of the translation of most of the certificate. Part of it will have to wait since it needs closer examination due to fainter writing and some unfamiliar Spanish terms that look at first glance to maybe be judicial terms. You have to write an email address etc  in the personal message since email addresses are not allowed on the threads.

I think Josey's right though, looks like I can't send any attachments via rootschat messaging.

Let me know via messaging and I will send them one way or way or another once quarantine is over.

My thanks to everyone who helped with suggestions and links and photos, which all helped in tracking things down so far.

Sam swift thank you I have your personal message and I have replyed,  can I ask what judicial terms meen , does the relationship to inquest or enquiry,
Title: Re: death in tenerife how do i find info
Post by: Sam Swift on Monday 24 August 20 19:11 BST (UK)
Oldhippyone

It does seem likely to be an inquest. After a very quick look up, the numbers listed and the terms used could refer to a local judiciary company who may have conducted it. If so, it is worth pursuing to see if we can access the findings of the inquest, since there may be records relating to the reference number. I'm not an expert in legal issues let alone Spanish so I have no idea how difficult it would be to get access. Nothing to be lost by trying though.

I'll have a look at your message.
