As many of us will have time on our hands due to enforced staycation, maybe it would be a good time to sort through those old family photos that maybe could do with a bit of a face lift, or maybe a touch of colour. This would give the restorers something to do as the photo board is very quiet at the moment.
Over to you ;)

I was wondering the other day whether I could maybe ask photo experts if they would be able to work on an old 19th century black ink sketch of my grandfather's uncle. He looks nothing like my family but as his sister was my grandfather's mother there has to be some likenesses somewhere. By using their imagination with colouring skin, hair, etc.
My grandfather and his offspring all had fair skin, light coloured eyes and (to me) this sketch doesn't imply that colouring, but it might to an artistic type.
Looking forward to any response.

Go ahead Rena, it's worth a try as more detail may be revealed with a good scan.

Well, if you're just begging for work .... A general sprucing up would be appreciated. I'll put them over on the photo board. [I can't give you better scans, though].
-
I have some 35mm slides (negatives).
How can I deal with these. Do I need to have them printed as positives, or can I scan them as negatives and post them?
-
We can invert them and turn them into a positive image.

Good thinking Carol, I for one will be going into solitary confinement for four long, long months. I shall be stir crazy without something to do in this time. We would love to see your long forgotten photos of your ancestors for us to clean up and maybe add a bit of colour. If it's at all possible we can work better with a good scan and there is information on the photo restoration board how to achieve this, but if all you have is a copy that somebody has sent you, we will do our very best. Thank you everybody. :D :D :D
-
Well said Pat...and thanks everyone in advance ;)
Carol
-
Thank you Erato and Dorrie for responding to our request ;)
Hoping others will follow suit :D
Carol
-
For those who missed it ;)
Carol

Drat! My scanner has just gone on strike! Wouldn't you just know?
-
Aw how annoying, can you not take a photo of it.
Carol
-
Could, but it wouldn't be as good.
-Managed to fix my printer when it went berserk last month - perhaps, as I have the time now, I'll have a fiddle with the scanner function....
(...don't hold your breath!)

Any more would be most welcome ;)
Please Stay safe and stay home

Ben, Roy and Joe gave everyone a good run. I'll ransack the files for another funny one.
-
What about your old avatar "Life of the Party" ;D
Carol
-
"Life of the Party" was Roy's grandmother [and my gg-grandmother].
-
Seeing her on your avatar always amused me...I think I would have liked her ;D

Can anything be done with negatives? I have some negatives of my family in the 50s that never became prints. I found them after my father died in 1993 and they are still in the box I call “dad’s box”. I think there’s one of me standing by a stone at Stonehenge.
-
Try scanning them shiny side down at 1200dpi and with white card on the top to keep it in place, then they can be inverted into a positive image. If you can't turn them into a positive, post the scanned neg on the Photo board and we can do it for you. Make sure that you dust the negs off with a soft brush first to remove dust particles. Scan in colour even if they are black and white images.

I’ve got three or four from my aunts first wedding. All black and white, a bit yellowed. I’ll try to post them later as my OH is currently occupying the computer playing a game.

Go ahead Lisa :D

I've just uploaded a couple, which are waiting for moderator approval.
Sadly the ones of my aunt's wedding are too big a filesize.

I'm sending one - just needs some cleaning up. It's a building, not people, but of historical interest.

That one is my childhood home and of no historical interest.

Just have to comment that it's so nice of you all to offer this service. Many photos are 'one-off' specimens and so precious that it is nice to get a 'new' one. Someone "gave me back" my dad a few years ago and when I get organised I'm going to ask them to do the same for my mum. So a big thank you in advance.
-
I think I can speak for all the restorers when I say we just love doing them. It is so interesting to see an image emerge as clean as we can make it, without blurs, scratches, tears etc. Please keep sending your photos, we will do the best we can with them.

How nice of you to say :-*...it's a very rewarding hobby and gives pleasure to both the posters and the restorers and it helps to preserve the old images for future generations to appreciate.

Have attempted to post a picture that restorers might like to have some practice with but it's held up in never never land.
Quarantining photos now - what will they think of next?
-
It takes around 12 hours or so for them to determine that the photo is not pornographic.

Nothing to do with quarantine, but everything to do with time zones and mods needing beauty sleep ;) or other life. Sarah will get to it as soon as she can.
Stay safe everyone :)
