Brilliant idea Boris et al for suggesting supermarkets give key workers an hour of their own to shop. In our area many older people got themselves up and out for the 8.00 to 9.00 slots only to find that there was still no bread, no eggs, and a bag of flour is now rarer than a loo roll.

I listened to an ambulance driver this morning, he had called in to his supermarket after a 14 hour shift. No bread, no milk, no bacon, no cheese, and he had children at home.

Where is all the food that disappears as soon as it hits the shelves. Surely sooner or later the greedy folk will have had their fill  >:(

Our local tesco is opening an hour earlier for keyworkers on Sunday... I shall definitely be taking advantage of that! I might actually get some bread haha. Currently surviving on one tiny loaf which we have been slicing as thin as possible to make it last!
It's just frustrating because there isn't actually a food shortage... It's just people being thoughtless and greedy.

Good idea, but most, especially the NHS workers work shifts, so giving a dedicated slot won't work. Perhaps they could introduce a system where they can drop off a shopping list, a shop assistant could collect the things on it and they could pick it up at the end of their shift.

I am hoping this will lead to a lot less waste of food and everything else.  I am finding myself being more cautious with the food we have rather than throwing something away that could still be eaten.  We have started toasting the crusts of the bread.  Something we have never done - we usually throw them away but how stupid we were.  They are delicious.

I think this virus will teach us the joy in small things once it is all over.  Hopefully we will come out of it better than we went in.

I am sure we will  gain a lot from this problem unfortunately but it might make us less wasteful as is suggested here, not a bad thing

Something  I would never dream of doing  in the past is cooking up vegetable skin and peel to make soup, when you think lot  fibre is held in the  skin, if I get despate I  will do that and make croutons out of the crusts

The stockpiling thing makes my blood boil.  >:(  The NHS worker who was crying on the video that's gone viral was actually a critical care nurse. I'm not implying that there's a pecking order or that some NHS workers deserve more than others but just that this lady is probably caring for people who are seriously ill with Covid19, how would these selfish grabbing **************  feel if it was one of their loved ones she was caring for.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

As I have said previously, their reward will not be in heaven,  not everyone is as caring as others so we mustn't judge everyone the same but it is very annoying,  we will all get through this

Rootschat has been a good way of us all venting  our feelings, hopefully we will all calm down and go about our life happily , otherwise we will get miseranble and if we are isolated we will all be depressed

WE HAVE A PARTY!!

We all know Martin has some cheese, wine and some flowers to spread around.  Louisa Maud has some soup on the hob and I have some toasted crusts (not much but I'm prepared to share).

What else do we need?  Music, dancing, disco lights?

I will bring two very mini loaves of bread and my song is a hearty rendition of You'll never walk alone.

Can I come to the party if I bring beef stew?  We bought beef and fresh vegetables earlier this week and made a huge pot of tasty stew, we had some for our dinner and froze the rest in tubs for home made ready meals - I'm sure we can spare some.  I also have a bottle of Prosecco  ;D

I think my Karaoke song will be the Beatles tune "Get by with a little help from my friends" (I will sing it out of tune though  ::))

I thought for ages that was David Jason as Inspector Frost!

Just used one 2K bag of potatoes.
Half part cooked and now cooling to freeze loosely to take out as necessary
for roasting.
Other half mashed with butter and milk in single portions for cottage pie topping etc.
Soo , roasties and mash up to now .
One bottle of Speckled Hen.
To jolly things up The Dubliners singing “I’ve been a wild rover”.
“ And it’s no nay never,  no nay never no more will I play the wild rover ,
  No never no more.”
I like to get up on the table , mostly because I am well under five feet
 feet tall !
So if it is not that kind of party better not tell me the time or Venue.
But I hope you all have a lovely time.

I have also thought that whilst you are all tucking into my out of date Complan I can recite a verse from the poem 'The Deserted Village' -- just to cheer you all up.

I haven't been shopping since last Sunday (waiting on the pension to come in next week), but one thing I did manage to pick up was 4 cans of crushed tomatoes and some sharp cheddar, which should help with the pizza making?  Also have a box of Merlot - cheaper by the box!

Over here non-essential (i.e. clothing, furniture, etc.) stores are closing down until further notice - most notably Ikea and The Bay (Hudson's Bay store).  Schools were already off for March break (16-20) but 3 more weeks - at least - has been added to that.  Various options are being offered to help kids keep up with their learning like on line courses and using a government owned TV station to broadcast educational programs. My daughter is a teacher, so she is at least home with the kids.  My son in law drives a bus, which of course exposes him to the general public on a daily basis.

Oh yes, my song has to be 'My Sharona' (with a slight variation as you can imagine)!

Cheers

Just a bit off topic from the current subject of this post ,but an email from my opticians, one of whom saw me yesterday in the supermarket.
They know I will need new specs , that can now be sorted in a couple of weeks time ,” eyes wise”, but they are not stopping tests as yet and ask me to phone about this .
However things change day to day and we will just have to see.
But I thought it was very good of them to contact me.

I am very tall and slender, well I was last time I went to the hall of mirrors at Blackpool.
So you will recognise me easily!
However, I get violent when inebriated, sing  rude sings and tell dubious jokes.
You have been warned.

I'm sure if I delve into the darkest recesses of the cupboard I can find a !970s Vesta Curry(the one with raisins) and a half empty(and therefore half full) bottle of Cinzano Bianco(left over from the house warming party). These could be consumed to the strains of "There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight" by The Carpenters.
Anyone able to do a yellowhammer impression("A little bit of bread and no cheese")?

Apologies for arriving late at the party, because of looking after poorly daughter.  However, the good news is that she's feeling a lot better - and fingers crossed that surgery goes ahead on 26th but as they're living from day to day, there's no certainty of that.

Music appropriate for the party - how about Muse (once described as 'Queen for the 21st century') and their Apocalypse Please, the lyrics of which include:

Declare this an emergency
Come on and spread a sense of urgency
And pull us through
And this is the end
This is the end
Of the world
And it's time we saw a miracle
Come on, it's time for something biblical
To pull us through...

As far as food and drink are concerned I'm not sure I could match Roger's Vesta curry and Cinzano (yuk yuk - that is SO 1970s  ;D).    I do have a few litres of cherry wine made two years ago which should be interesting by now;  and as I'm involved with one of the few working water-mills in Wales, I'll bring along some nice home-made bread.

Sure I can find something to bring to the party - my song offering is:

'We are the World' by USA for Africa (written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie) in 1985.

I know it was a charity single to raise money for African Famine Relief but just listening to the words now they seem particularly apt.   Got a lump in my throat just listening to it again.    Many familiar faces singing, some no longer with us.   Watched/listened on youtube - afraid I'm no good at providing the link though.

These could be consumed to the strains of "There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight" by The Carpenters.

Surely you mean Herman's Hermits (1967) ;D ;D
Or possibly the New Vaudeville Band (1966)?

Carpenters cover was in 1976.

I made a large Shepherd's Pie this week - anyone want some?

I am reminded, Roger, of my student days when I worked in a nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights.  Watneys Red Barrel was 2/6d a pint -  or was that a gallon?   ;D  It's a very long time ago, when we were  all young and beautiful.....

Thanks Carol - been such a stressful time, and more to come, so I am so grateful for the kindness and friendship we receive on here.  This has certainly taught me how things can go from fine to 'at death's door ' within a few hours.

Roger's post reminds me of a 1970s 'Bad Taste' party I went to.  Not content to dress in bad taste people also brought the most horrendous selection of 1970s booze of various primary colours.  I doubt that Chateau Musar would have found a place there that night; however one of my business associates at the time was a wine merchant who had the most amazing cellar.  Imagine going down there and holding bottles of wine from the time of Napoleon.  It was like going back in history, more akin to  archeaology than dipsomania.   ;D

The song:
“The day after tomorrow - will be here soon” (sung by Vera Lynn as in a radio broadcast) from Lionel Bart’s musical “Blitz!” - I saw the original production in 1962 and although, of course, I was a mere babe-in-arms, I remember it very well!   ;D ;D

Tin of peaches best before date June 2019. May be the sole survivor of my Brexit Hoard Mk. 1. Can it bring a couple of friends, a tin of pears (Brexit Hoard Mk. 2) and a tin of tomatoes (Brexit Hoard Mk. 3) ? I ate all the other tinned tomatoes, pasta varieties, jars of pasta sauce and assorted tins of fish from Brexit Hoards 1, 2 & 3 long since. Couple of bottles European wine left from Brexit Hoard 4 because I was on antibiotics when I'd intended to open them.

I am afraid I cannot bring any Ben Ean mosel to the party, as it got drunk thirty years ago. Also our tastes have "improved" since then, now into sauvignon blanc.

Should be able to supply some bread, as the local baker is still operating at the moment.

Mind is blank (more so than usual) regarding any songs for the occasion.

Well it looks like the party is going well.  You all seem to be enjoying yourself and the Blue Nun and Prosecco is flowing.  Some of the food sounds a bit suspect but I'll try anything once.

Masterchef was disappointing.  I fell asleep half way through.  Maybe I should have stayed at the party.

We have spent the morning deep cleaning our hobby/computer room so it is now all clean and shiny and smelling lovely.  The sun is shining through the window and the world is good.

So far, there have been far more personal positives than negatives to the situation but that may change if the news starts to get worse.  At least I feel good now.

Maybe we should all clear out our cupboards and see who has the earliest sell-by date.

My profile pic is my lovely Mum, taken when she was just 18 and heading into the unknown of WW2 and a few years of hardship, deprivation and hiding in the cupboard under the stairs (writing love letters to my Dad who was stationed in Palestine).

Cheers all!  I can't add to the "past its sell by date" food stories, but the party looks great with plenty to go 'round.

Hope that the panic buying in the UK will settle down soon!  Here we are fairly normal, so hopefully that will continue.

Thanks for the link. I've saved it to my Favourites list in the rapidly expanding "Health" folder.
I'm asked if I have any symptoms at the radiography reception desk when I arrive for treatment each weekday. No relatives, friends, carers or drivers allowed past main reception desk at front of building since Tuesday. The only place they can visit is toilet near main door. They have to wait outside the building. Cafe & seating area at front of reception has been restricted since midweek to patients waiting for appointments or transport. No longer the busy, friendly place it was.
Volunteer drivers for the cancer support charity are now restricted to 1 patient per car. No fellow patient to chat with about treatment or normal life, or work or life before cancer, during the long journey.  The charity put out an appeal a fortnight ago for hand sanitiser for drivers as their usual supply was unobtainable and all that was available was going to cost "silly money".
The number of chairs for patients waiting outside individual treatment rooms has been halved. They are placed about 4 feet apart. We sit as far away from each other as possible and raise our voices to speak to each other. A vacant row of chairs was cleaned while I was waiting. Armchairs with fabric seats have been pushed against the wall, facing the wall so that nobody can sit on them.
Yesterday I had the entire waiting area for 2 treatment rooms to myself. There was a fault with the fire alarm and aloud, incessant, high-pitched whine from a box on the wall behind the chairs. Decided I needed a displacement activity in an attempt to ignore it.  Remembered I hadn't done my daily physio so moved to the opposite end of the room and concentrated on my exercises. Still plenty of time to wait for my appointment - so took advantage of the expanse of floor space, which is lacking at home, to dance. Began with a solo version of  Morecambe & Wise "Bring me Sunshine" routine; (It was Daniel Radcliffe's 1st choice on "Desert Island Discs" that morning.) I'm Ernie as I'm little; I had to imagine Eric beside me. I sang quietly. Next, a simple European folk dance, learned at school. Then I tried Irish dancing but that was a step beyond what my recovering body can cope with. (I've been singing a verse & chorus from a hymn to St. Patrick to time hand-washing this week.) Realised leg muscles have been drastically under-used these past months and 2 hours sitting in a car + time in waiting-room 5 days a week wasn't helping, so practised fencing moves up & down the room. Double-doors were wide-open; I paused movement whenever I heard people approaching along the corridor. Then my name was called, putting an end to activity.
A radiographer gave me 2 Covid-19 information sheets specifically for cancer patients having treatment.
I'm practising new skills - turning taps on & off and opening hospital toilet doors using my elbow. Elbow also deployed to push button for opening waiting-room doors. N.B. I do not sneeze into my elbow; I carry tissues in every pocket.

I grow a tall native wildflower with big soft leaves, used by country folk before loo-paper was invented. A neighbour calls it the "Andrex Plant". It takes 3 years to grow from seed. If it's stolen from my garden, I'll know why.

I was disappointed not to attend the party but I just had to watch two programmes about Ready, Steady Go on BBC4 last night. Yes, Keith Fordyce was there but so was Cathy McGowan and, let's be honest, which 13 year old lad was not in love with her in 1963?. The programme was a must see in those days and so were those of last night.
I had a crate of twelve bottles, bought from the Corona pop(?) man, ready to bring along with a couple of Bird's Eye ready roast beef dinners circa 1974.
I watched some of today's live press conference/update on the news. It is claimed that an extra billion pounds worth of food is held in households than there was three weeks ago, so we'll soon know the greedy baskets because they will be the ones in a few weeks time who will be too fat to get off their a****. At least they won't be able to get to the shops for a while!.
Furthermore, the consensus of opinion is that bulk/panic buying should soon start to tail off because the greedy sods will have so much.
Also, our local council have made the decision to stop their fortnightly collection of garden waste for which we have paid handsomely. They will CONSIDER carrying our subscriptions forward. If they do not carry it forward we will have paid for a service which they will have failed to provide. We have had two collections this month but that was due to an error on behalf of the driver; we should have only had one. I don't think, either, that our other bins will be emptied any more often than they are now - recycling weekly and non-recyclable (landfill) fortnightly.
Don't forget my invitation to the next do, please.
 :)

In Denmark they are selling 1 hand sanitizer for 40kr or 2 for 1000kr.

Excellent idea.

Not quite sticking to thread but my husband asked for a "Hobgoblin" with his cup of tea today! We are losing the plot already. He meant a Hobnob biscuit of course.

Is the party continuing today please? I have just found a fancy tin of Lobster Bisque soup at the back of my cupboard and I'm  too embarrassed to tell you the expiry date.

I'd like "It's going to be a long lonely summer" but I don't remember who sang it.

Enjoying the rattle on here folks.

Ankerdine - I don't see why the party can't continue.  I think it should go on for the length of the outbreak (not outbread as I typed first).  Lobster bisque soup sounds good and I don't think that would go off if it's in a tin.

Wasn't it 'A long and lonely Christmas without you'?  That was by Dana.  Never mind, we'll change it.  I'm sure she won't mind.

Let's go the "whole hog" and have a three course meal from yesteryear

Prawn Cocktail (Soup in a basket is off)
Smorgasbord(Fill in your own details)
Black Forest Gateau(Compulsory)

Washed down with copious quantities of Blue Nun

Mentioned in Michel Roux's obit as "boring food" eaten by Britons which the Roux brothers replaced with more adventurous dishes. Prawn cocktail and Black Forest Gateau were exotic to me.

Reminiscent of Bernie Inns with a main course of steak a la 1970's.
A smorgasbord contained all the food needed - appetisers, starters, mains and puds. There was one of our almost local pubs which did a smorgasbord - wow what a spread. It was almost more than an avid panic buyer could buy.

I could bring homemade vegetable soup. A parsnip, lingering too long in the fridge, a withered leek, an out of date packet of barley, retrieved from the food recycling caddy. Used teabags + assorted leftovers in the caddy-liner will add a "je ne sais quois" to the taste. I'll be generous and not sample any myself.  ;D
What I won't share are tins of fish (supermarket brand) or my sole packet of Warburton's Thins; they are mine, all mine.
I'm bringing Simon and Garfunkel LPs. We can listen to 2 songs, "I am a Rock" and "Old Friends".

                            I am a Rock
"I am alone
Gazing from my window to the street below"
  ...

"I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate"
 ...

"I have my books
And my poetry to protect me.
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb,
I touch no one and no one touches me"
"I am a rock.
 I am an island"

                              "Old Friends" or "Bookends"

 "Old friends
  Sat on their park bench
  Like bookends"

Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate, has just read a poem for the times we're in on Radio 4 at the end of "P.M."

As suggested - a new thread just for the Corona Virus Party.

Everyone is welcome.  All you need is to bring something that has either been in your cupboard for years and is now out of date or something you have obtained from the panic-buying spree.

You also need to chose a karaoke song, with a corona virus theme.

This was started on the 'State of Emergency' thread.

Let's see if we can keep the party going for the length of the outbreak.

I can't believe that this has received so little attention given the seriousness need and importance of self isolation when so many of us are at risk  :-\

;D I could have joined in. My old costume and bells might be hidden away somewhere.
I was going to do morris dancing if I'd waited longer at hospital yesterday - I had plenty of clean hankies to wave. I've forgotten the steps though and the dances are too strenuous for me now.

Oh - for nostalgia's sake I've still got a glitter strappy tank top I knitted from an unravelled jumper from a charity shop in the 70s, bit risqué with a lacy pattern but it's a rootschat party so who cares? I am sure I'll squeeze in somehow. Add on the orange cork platform slip ons & wet look flares, bingo....

I have a bright blue satin skirt that has a split up to the side which was almost indecent.  I was wearing it the night I met my husband.

I tried to get into a many years ago and it didn't go past my knees.  I'm not sure how far it would get now but, again, as it's Rootschat I'm sure nobody would mind.

I think we would look great together Josey.

You're obviously fixated on bread, as I am. Anyone remember the bakers' strike in Britain 1977 ? There was an emergency loaf, nicknamed "Jubilee Loaf". I could bring a loaf of "emergency bread" which I made back then. I finally succeeded in baking a palatable loaf in the final week of the strike.

Re people moving areas, I heard on our news that people are going to their holiday homes in Yorkshire, as they'd rather be in isolation there than at home. Cornwall are having a similar problem with the second home owners arriving for the duration. The usual residents are vey worried about this , because of the impact on healthcare resources, shopping and of course the virus being spread .
I must admit for me, I'd much rather be safe here at home .
I feel that if they got this food and loo roll situation sorted in the uk,  there'd be a lot less anxiety about the immediate situation.

I reacted strongly when someone got close & touched me yesterday. The only people allowed to do that are NHS staff.
I met with "Corona Virus is a big hoax", (said in jest, I think) on my way home from radiotherapy yesterday. I'd already stepped out of his path to avoid being near him. According to research, it's mostly white men who are the sceptics or the don't cares. It's to do with a male's willingness to take risks - useful in wartime and hunting but not what we need at present.

I think you’re right. A group of uni students in a shared house have all been unwell but found time to go out for one last night before the pubs shut yesterday. Guess what ! they’ve all gone home to their parents. Except for the lad who phoned to say he was coming home and was told in no uncertain terms to stay where is  >:(

My cousin living in North Wales just noted that caravan parks close to where she lives are starting to fill up!  Surely those who own those parks should be more responsible and turn people back?  Here in Canada some people are heading up North to their cottages - at least those are fairly isolated and self-contained and have (usually) all mod cons - so no real impact to the residents of any surrounding towns.

None of us is taking this situation light heartedly ,  sometimes at times like
this that are so worrying  we do need a bit of a break,   it is light hearted banter that has been suggested brightens up our day if we are isolated, I am awaiting a call from someone who I know will be all doom and gloom, I have asked her by text, please no doom and gloom.

I like others are very concerned , it is an unknown future for us all and none of us is taking it light heartedly , we all know the implications

My granddaughter is returning  home from Uni, her classes have all been shut down and lost her job, I for one will be pleased to see her home but she also has an unknown future along with so many others

So I welcome the light hearted banter to soften the blow as it were

Take care
