Post by: ryanh315 on Tuesday 24 March 20 11:02 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

I was wondering who I would contact to get info regarding places of burial in the county of Banffshire, mainly Whitehills and Banff.

Many thanks

Ryan :)

If you search on Findagrave, under Scotland, Aberdeenshire, Banff, you will get a map with all the locations

Go to Deceased Online www.deceasedonline.com. The burial records in the post-1995 version of Aberdeenshire, including Banff and Boyndie (Whitehills), are online there.  See https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch

For other parts of Banffshire, see http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp but be aware that not all burials in this area have yet been indexed online.

If you are looking for earlier burials at Boyndie, search for "Transcripts of all the Monumental Inscriptions in the Churchyard of Boyndie" and you will find a list produced by a local schoolmaster in 1885.

There used to be, an online transcription of the inscriptions (not the burials, just the inscriptions on the surviving gravestones) in Banff's old kirkyard, but I don't have a note of where it was to be found.

There's also an MI index at http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/databank/miindex/miindex.php but neither Banff nor Boyndie has been done as yet.

Dear ryanh315, Did you get what you were looking for on the Whitehills and Banff headstones as there are a few list around including William Crammond Books (around 1886) that he did for Banffshire. nw_whiskers

Dear ryanh315, I take it that you are looking "specific names and dates" like I have in the attached posts. Yes, William Cramond, Schoolmaster, Cullen did a number of books for the New Spalding Club which may be subject to Copyright as they come up on Amazon.co.uk etc. He certainly did the Old Churchyard at Banff as I was able to borrow a leather bound copy from the Library some years ago but I don't think that option is open these days. Short extracts from such sources are possible as reference material so  that you have a few worthwhile options open to you.
Anyway, if you can be a bit more specific with names, dates and places you might get a bit more help with your research. Best wishes, nw_whiskers

I'm afraid I have completely failed to find this online, or the similar one that used to be online with the Banff Old Kirkyard MIs.

I have just looked and a transcript of the volumes is to be found for Rathven, Deskford, Cullen, Boyndie and Enzie Braes here:

Sorry for my late reply.

That's correct in that I am looking for names/dates.

GR2 thank you for the link, will check it out.

As GR2 said, a transcription of Boyndie MIs is here - http://charlesflett.co.uk/BoyndieMI.htm
This website deserves much much wider recognition.
Margaret Shand also transcribed them - I have her version too.
I haven't compared the two transcriptions.

Years ago Douglas Taylor in Canada did the same for Banff - I have his version. I think it could still be deep in Rootswebs Archive for Banffshire way back in 1999 or 2000 (if they're still available).
But this is a link to Cramond's book, a free eBook - http://tinyurl.com/kfwr2vb - the MIs start on page 295.
