Title: Small moments of pleasure in isolation
Post by: Lydart on Friday 27 March 20 14:48 GMT (UK)
Now we are being isolated for goodness knows how long, I'm trying to make a note of small moments of pleasure.   Add yours ....

Here's the first ... my cats were stretched out in the sun on the drive while I sat on the bench and had a cuppa outside ....

Both fast asleep, and a red admiral butterfly flitted past, and delicately landed on the side of the sleeping cat, where it paused for several seconds.

(Camera was, of course, indoors !)

Isn't it wonderful how the camera is never to hand when you need it? I had it outside by me all day yesterday, nothing spectacular .... today, lovely pose by both cats ... by the time I'd gone in and got said camera ..... vanished! But it was a lovely sight.

When I went shopping yesterday I asked our neighbour if they wanted anything.  Oh, eggs if you can get them, please.  No problem.  Gave them to said neighbour when we got home and was offered money for them but I said, don't worry, pay us back when we need something.

Today a bunch of daffodils were placed on our doorstep with a note 'Thought you might like these from the garden.  Thanks for the eggs.

Daffodils now have pride of place on our kitchen windowsill.

Watching two sets of blue tits checking out the nesting boxes, while having lunch in the sunshine warmed conservatory. Who needs to go anywhere?

Now I can't visit older friends I allow myself a tea break while working in the garden. This afternoon two buzzards looped lazily overhead. The little birds were silent and hid. The buzzards went off to patrol elsewhere and the birds exploded, singing and flying across the garden.

Tuesday - we sat in our "fishing" chairs outside, between the open doors of the conservatory. We were on the balcony of our cabin during our now cancelled Baltic cruise. Maybe next year.

Wednesday -  Similar scenario, but a very slight change of location. We were on our favourite west Wales beach. Hopefully, we will be there in July.

Thursday - Similar scenario, but with another slight change of location. We were on the terrace at a west Wales pub we have been known to visit during a coastal path walk. Again, we hope to be there in July.

Each day the sun was shining, the sky cloudless, it was warm. we had mugs of tea in our hands, feet up and, having been working in it, the garden was looking good, some five or six weeks early.

I wondered where this thread had gone .... but have found it !

My small moment of pleasure this morning, was waking early, and going out for my allowed walk before five o'clock !   (Boy, it was cold !) .... but the birds were singing their hearts out, and I sat on the bench on the green .... and just listened to the dawn chorus.   Magical .... whether you are in town or country, if you wake early, go out and listen to the birds .... or even open a window and hear the joyous sounds.   Even sparrows sing ....

Well you in the UK will have the pleasure of an hour less in isolation overnight and we in NZ will have an hour more next weekend  :D
Agree with you re the birds going about their days as always and enjoy having them about, Tui here arise earliest and start their song before dawn and go until well after dusk as well. Still have the chorus of crickets performing well too  :)

Some lovely moments of pleasure here...what a shame that it takes a serious global issue to make us stop and smell the roses.
I thought this yesterday...
We opened up the caravan and gave it a freshen up and opened the windows...then we sat and had a cup of tea and watched the Blue Tits feeding and nest building.
We were going away for Easter in the caravan but will now enjoy it looking out across the garden watching nature in the sunshine instead. It makes you realise how much we take for granted until those things are taken away from us.
Maybe when this is all over, we will realise how lucky we are and appreciate our Family, our freedom and the world around us much more.
Thanks for sharing your uplifting moments  :D

Please stay home and take care.

A damson tree we planted 2 years ago is blossoming like mad [had to knock off last year's blossom to allow roots to flourish]. A beautiful delicate sight and there have been insects around so hopefully will be pollinated.

Our damsons are in full flower as well.  We used to have an orchard of them and one year picked over half a ton for the market but the trees have increasingly suffered from old age and the gales.

One bright spark for us are the camilla flowers and I am really looking forward to the tulips starting.  Their buds are starting to show colour ;D

I live in a small block of 4 1930's units with a large garden.
Everyone has had their back doors open and we have conversed at a distance.
Lots of cleaning and repairs/painting going on by everyone.

A hub of activity in a difficult time.

I lost my 3 elderly cats a few months apart last year and decided not to get anymore.

As every ones doors are open my neighbours 2 cats have been coming in and making themselves at home.

That has been an incredible pleasure for me as I live alone :)

Agree with that TY, don't have one these days myself though. Neighbourhood cats frequent our yard, a very new arrival is quite a friendly tail less ginger, not sure if true manx  :-\ and don't know where it lives but happy to roll on back around me as does a handsome black and white tom regularly, however  both unfortunately could really be on the  'Visitors to your birdtable' thread as very keen on stalking birds and invite a growling from me.

Nice to step outside to pick a handful of ripened tomatoes at lunchtime today, plants looking a bit expired for efforts but more green ones on them  :)

I am on a big gardening exercise.
Pruning, chopping, weeding. As I expose the ground insects are flying every where and in come the fantails.  They move too quickly for this amateur photographer but

https://images.app.goo.gl/bpf5NbExokptCSnA6

They have such a loud friendly chirp, and now there is no noise from traffic they are just delightful they come very close, much like a robin would  in an  English garden.

We have also noticed that the grey herons http://www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/white-faced-heron. That usually fly in in the evening to roost in our oak trees (planted to celebrate the coronation of QE 2 - our house is in the grounds of an old primary school) are now flying in all the time. I am sure it is the no traffic thing that is affecting them.

Well, I had a small moment of pleasure on Sunday. The OH went out for some shopping, so I lay down on my bed. And there it was.
Pure delight.
It lasted for about 20 minutes.
Ahhhhhh.  :o::)  :o::)  :o::)

She had forgotten her purse, and did not realise it until she got to the shops, so had to come home and interrupted my heaven.
20 minutes of no hoovering, asking me to do one job or another, tidying up my stuff, clunking of dishes, etc, etc.
It was bliss.

Malky.

Your place and routine must seem a lot quieter without the little ones there and being so much part of their care, CF. The videos and facetime do help and we're able to keep up regularly with that too, not quite the same as having them with you though is it. We live 3 hours drive from our granddaughters and our plans for visiting among the many cancellations we've had to make but with everyone doing the same have quite easily adapted. Miss not quite 6 and miss very nearly 6 months are quite delightful, their family bubble well and happy which is the main thing. Plenty to keep older one amused, play learning and a very big yard to run and play when she's not amusing the baby with various other activity.

Not so many children around our place, just 2 schoolboys 7 and 16 from 2 separate houses alongside driveway and have only heard the younger one playing with his dad outside. There are usually some loud and boisterous children occasionally a few houses over in another street, think they must just get hyped up with mates and visitors perhaps  :)  Have friends living across from one corner and their young adult daughters have been doing some Irish dance practice on the deck, a familiar sound as ours used to do same back in the day  :)

Peaceful neighbourhood is nice, very few dogs as well but when one barks another does ... and one does like to do a siren impression sometimes  :D Think perhaps fewer sirens than usual with less traffic etc but still some each day, also the police helicopter a regular around here but feel pretty safe and content enough being a homebody and choice of walks around the block to blow out cobwebs  ;D

Nice temperature and clear and still, so better day for gardening here for me Mckha, mosquitoes thought so too though and I did have those little ankle biters around me in the morning, a bit breezy and cooler on Monday. Also had the company of our lovely fantails as I stirred the insects along with chorus of resident tui and a grey warbler sharing my sanctuary  :)
Quite secluded for a residential area with being back a long driveway from the main road and lots of trees on 1/2 acre, I do realise and appreciate that it really is paradise at the moment, so rather guilty pleasure when others are cramped for space.

Grass is beginning to green up a little but not much growth yet after the dry and leaves beginning to fall. For many years we've been getting a garden bag service, which was a good service and price, now the service has deteriorated and price escalated. March pickup was running late ... again, ( they messaged beginning of month before any restrictions ) every time I checked online account they put forward the pickup date by another day until it disappeared mid month and next pick up April ! ... Only online contact and more delay then an unbelievable and poor excuse from a lazy driver who reported no access, however my response was that if that wasn't rectified I'd be an ex customer this time.  I was a bit sceptical that the promise of collection and replacement bag would come within the week ... and lo and behold it did!! On a Sunday as well, 29th.  Very pleased, except now I have to make sure I fill it before the April pickup due 6th  :D Some seedheads and woody stuff and cuttings not going in the compost went in today.

I had a small moment of pleasure today when I opened my back door and I could hear..... nothing.

A welcome respite from the screaming and shouting from the children in two nearby gardens which has been constant since the schools closed.  I realise the kids have to play but it has made my garden a no go area.  I took advantage of the situation and did a bit of tidying around the garden, very relaxing  :)

The peace and quiet with no cars or motor bikes going through the village has been really noticeable.

The sky has been so blue and cloudless, no planes or vapour trails. It's surprising  how you get used to noise and when it's not there it has a very calming affect. Sitting out in the garden has been a real pleasure.

Like you CF our daughter has sent us numerous pictures of what activities our grandsons ( 4 & 7) have been up to over the last week, they're going to create a photo album of 'their time in isolation' as a reminder of how you can manage!

More gardening today, it's been a joy to be outside, unhurried and enjoying the sunshine.

yesterday evening I watched and enjoyed a modern ballet which I would certainly never have seen otherwise!

I love watching ballet at the theatre but have never found that it has the same magic on TV. However, I watched Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake on TV at the weekend, it was absolutely fantastic!  :D I had read about it previously and couldn't get my head around how having men playing the swans would work but they portrayed a different side from the elegant calm creatures we usually associate with them. Brilliant!

Certainly going viral for their efforts, Debra  :) ... Good family fun preparing and performing.

Another peaceful day here too, we're also on the flight path to Auckland airport Caroline and not far from a busy airfield so definitely quieter skyward. Have thought a few too many cars seemingly on a mission on the main road and some with 2 or more in them and noticed same when out other times this week while stretching the legs.  I crossed for a bottle of milk at the little food pantry a couple of minutes walk away, $3 NZ for 2 litre bottle, only pennies I've reached for since last week.

Was also unhurried in garden until I had an email around 4pm to say garden bag pickup would be early, please have ready by 2 April and will be collected by 6 th at latest ... so that gave me a hurry up, it's nearly full but not pushed down a lot and I'll probably be able to add a bit more before they come  :-\

Luckily dinner was still pretty much on time, 2nd half of yesterday's creation and no prep to do  8)

It's been a bit cold of late for cruising/sitting on the beach/the pub terrace but it is due to warm up over the weekend. Weekend, what is a weekend?
Our daily walks now seem to count for even more.
This AM we saw an ex-colleague of mine with his wife. The last time I was talking to him his wife had received some bad news so it was good to see them out walking together, although we didn't/couldn't stop for a chat.

Roobarb, I read Hiding The Past by Nathan Dylan Goodwin a while ago and I really enjoyed it, it was a freebie at the time.  After seeing your post I had a look and Kindle has 2 of his books for 99p, The Asylum and The Sterling Affair, I am going to download both to help me switch off and relax.

One of my favourites is Steve Robinson, I have read all of his Jefferson Tayte books, perfect for anyone interested in genealogy and a murder mystery.  His latest book, The Penmaker's Wife, popped up on Kindle for £1 the other day so I grabbed it while it was at a good price.  I was going to download it for my holiday but it doesn't look like we will be able to go now.  Never mind, at least I have some books to read  :)
Title: Re: Small moments of pleasure in isolation
Post by: Roobarb on Thursday 02 April 20 15:25 BST (UK)
The Sterling Affair is his latest, I've read all his others and eagerly pounce when there's a new one at the reduced price! You don't have to read the Forensic Genealogist books in order but it's best if you can do that, saves confusion about his personal life!

Do you use Bookbub? I can recommend it, you put in the names of any authors you're interested in and they email you if there's a price drop. They also send a regular email (weekly? Not sure!) with books with price drops in the categories you have chosen. eReaderIQ is pretty good too. You don't get lots of rubbish emails from either of them.

I've read all of the Steve Robinson books too, I read The Penmaker's Wife when I'd taken out a free three month Kindle Unlimited subscription so I got it for nothing! Cancelled the subscription after that.

Happy reading!  :)

Like you I have read all Nathan Dylan Goodwins books and Steve Robinsons. I find them both really enjoyable and pounce on them when they're published!
I met Nathan last year when I visited Family Tree Live at Ally Pally, he was such a charming man and very eager to chat to his readers.
Have you read any of Wendy Percival's Esme Quentin books also genealogy based.
I'm a sucker for most genealogy based books in the hope that one of their suggestions on research will be a eureka moment... sadly not so far but I do enjoy reading them all!
This current self isolation is a good time to catch up,on your reading without feeling guilty that you ought to be doing something else!

How wonderful that must have been to meet the man himself!

I haven't read anything by Wendy Percival, will have a look for hers. I did download a couple of Lucinda Riley after a recommendation from a Rootschatter, I know some women like a more romanticised novel but they weren't to my taste they were a bit too sweet and girly for me.

I do read loads on a day to day basis so it's as the thread title says, a small moment of pleasure in isolation, or actually many small moments!

I'd go totally mad if I didn't spend time each day reading. I'm one of those annoying people who has a book in every room, and picks it up and carries on whenever on that room (But never have books of the same author, or even type of book, on the go at the same time, if you want to make that work!)

I read one on the Kindle app on my tablet before getting up in the morning and going to sleep at night. I also read a paperback in the bath.  :) People ask how I can read what is effectively two at once but I find it quite easy.

Good gracious TY I'm not sure I could cope with a different genre of book in every room.... I like to read a variety of topics but not all at the same time! Having said that I'm reading Hilary Mantels final book on Thomas Cromwell and one about Genngis Khan... all history admittedly!

No early dementia for you then as your brain must have to be on the ball all the time!

I have to say I couldn't live without books and this is an ideal time to not feel guilty in putting your feet up for a good read... having done a three mile walk thus morning even better reason.

I'm afraid, Caw1,  that I can't recall a time when I didn't have at least a couple of books on the go at the same time. I've just "done" this week the Hilary Mantell one you mention, finished that.
Kate Atkinson's latest Jackson Brodie is ready and poised to take over.
I have actually got a book on Ghengis Khan by - I think - Bamber Gascoigne, somewhere downstairs on a bookshelf with other work on similar civilisations, but not re-reading him at present.
In sitting room, re-reading Olivia Manning's "Balkan Trilogy" as a real period piece.
Bedside: Joyce Grenfell's first autobiography.
In the conservatory, a Robert Goddard semi-thriller.
Dining room side table has a book on Venetian Art on the go.
Handbag holds usually a slim paperback, just in case I'm stuck, think ( I haven't looked in there for a while, as can't get out) it's a Scott Fitzgerald one.
There's also a book in my car, can't tell what without going out to look.
In the kitchen, I must admit, the book on the side shelf has been neglected for the very welcome daily crossword  that I'm really relying on to keep me sane when not reading.
Not sure all that's any way to ward off dementia, I enjoy re-reading books I've not read for a long time. Sadly, as I've a good memory, thrillers don't work well that way, as I remember the plot too well.
And as design used to be my business, I simply couldn't bear any colouring in book for adults or children! Too boring, I'm afraid, it doesn't help me switch off - although I used often to do the drawings for children to colour in, when needed.

I have started on my home library - all those books I didn't want to get rid of! Started with an Elizabeth Goudge, just finished Austen's Persuasion, and started on "Ask the fellows who cut the hay". I picked that up quite recently at a second-hand stall, having often meant to read it.

Well done daughter and granddaughter, thumbs up smiley  :)

Our granddaughter, in first year of school, is getting a lot of play based learning by her teacher mum/our daughter currently on maternity leave from school. Granddaughter's reading and writing is very good and loves to do some of that each day, along with reading to us beautifully by video call in the evenings before bedtime sometimes  8)

Look forward to my in house barista making our coffee for afternoon break, tea other times, he's still attempting the art of new froth patterns but has a couple now off pat  :D
I purchased a large bag of beans on special before we needed them ... so all set for a good while yet but don't think they're hard to get  :-\

I looked for a six pack in the back of my fridge - I failed to find it so I'll just have to out up with my tummy the way it is.  ;)
 :)

Apart from that, today's small moment of pleasure in lockdown was the resumption of my language class on Zoom. It should have been last week but, for some reason or another, I wasn't able to connect.

Yes, it's the birds I have always noticed anyway that I am just so pleased to have about and reminding me to get on with my day.

Plus I had a treat today, ( Monday I believe although has now rolled over to Tuesday NZ )  :) put my hair up in a tidier do and added earrings to my look and we gave the car a run  :D Not far, just to the pharmacy where a repeat script was waiting for husband, he drove and I went in, plus with a very easy entrance to a supermarket managed to get freshly baked hot cross buns  :) Saw quite a few people out walking in the sunshine, mostly in pairs as allowed if in same bubble, also police car behind us on way and one under siren on way back. Took direct route there and different way back but still within same distance from home in a semi-circle, there and back well under an hour but about a mile further from home than our closest supermarket we've been to twice since lockdown.

Sunshine and warmth, peaceful and still outdoors, a big fat woodpigeon having a nap in tree outside back door all morning and taking a drink before relocating, slightly too warm on my late morning walk but still very pleasant.

The beautiful new leaves on my very tall silver birch swaying in the breeze
... and mine are beginning to yellow and fall, 4 very tall trees also.
Albizia is sprouting some new leaf though, has been under seasonal stress with the dry spell and in poor shape now with some bare branches, in recovery mode maybe  :-\
Have noticed other unexpected new leaf production in garden other years in Autumn ... strange but true  :P  :D

I want to do that but when it comes to days off I barely have the energy for the basics (yes I know this is lazy and I'll probably get grief for this).

Yesterday the girls and I watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Been trying to encourage them to try some of the films I loved as a child.

You are definitely not lazy pharmaT you work hard and have your girls to look after.

It is more important for you to spend quality time with them when you are home than to spring clean your house.

Enjoy your time with them as they grow up so quickly.

My garden is full of insects. Dozens of (probably) mining bees scooting around a few inches from the ground - not sure what their purpose is, as they don't seem to be visiting any flowers. I guess they are recently emerged from the ground. Various other bees and hoverflies, including my favourite which I always think of as the triangular one! I think it is the bee-fly, bombylius. Quite a few seven spot ladybirds, and a few butterflies.

I'm reading that one at the moment, also got it for 99p.  :) They all come down to that price at some time, I believe there's a period for all of them just after they're first published that they have to be offered at the reduced price. I was so keen to get one from another of my favourite authors that I grabbed it for £2.99, only for it to drop to 99p a week later. I comforted myself with the thought that I'm spending very little at the moment and I deserved it.  :)

I intended to share an amusing card I found but it is too large to attach as a picture and making it smaller means you won't see anything.

It was a picture of a father and son. Son is sat in front of his computer holding up an object.  Dad says to him "Those were popular when I was a boy.  It's called a pencil."

It raised a smile to my face.  ;D

So do I and can picture it well  :D... we had same with the tooth fairy and Easter bunny coming at the same time to our granddaughter with first wobbly tooth coming out on the Saturday, she's a month off being 6 years, not a complete gap as new tooth is well and truly showing behind where the baby tooth was. Her wee sister turned 6 months old at Easter and her first tooth cut through at the same time and in same place her sister lost her lower front one and now has another through beside it.  The face time is lovely and thankful for the technology  :)

I realise this is slightly out the isolation category but I think it happened beause people aren't out and about so much.  Yesterday on the way home from work the seals were basking on rocks really close to the road, deer were in the low field on the other side of the road and the pheasants were strolling along the road when I went to turn onto the moor road.  They have zero road sense btw.

It was excellent especially washed down with a nice bottle of merlot.

My daughter text to say that she has an appointment at a Clarks shoe shop on Friday to get the boys feet measured. So they'll hopefully get some properly fitted shoes soon . ( for those not in uk, , many of us grew up in Clarks shoes professionally measured ). Some may say what's the point as you can get shoes in supermarkets and yes you can - that's what they've been wearing these last few months, but she prefers them to have at least one pair of Clarks each.

When it was getting to the end of the summer holidays out came the Stanley knife and the toe was cut out by Dad! Not long ago I found a photo and there I am with my sandals with the toes cut out.

Was it Clarkes that had a that x-ray machine to measure your feet - looked it up and it was called a  Pedoscope. Surely they weren't real x-rays?
