Hi all,
I seem to have a problem in determining the wife of Elisha Ribbans (bapt. 14-3-1823 Tuddenham , St.Martin.)
He married a Martha Barker in dec1/4 1848 Ipswich (per FreeBMD).
In all the censuses she consistently states Westerfield as her place of birth and yob varies from 1813 to 1825.
Is anyone able to give more details of the marriage as to her father's name, please?
To my knowledge they did not have any children
and Elisha is bur. 1872 and Martha in 1881in Ipswich cemetery.
(I originally had her as Martha Fuller Barker bapt. 1813 in Ipswich St.Clements but have since verified that is not the correct person having traced her marriage and children etc.)
Any help will be most appreciated

From Marriage Locator:
http://www.marriage-locator.co.uk/cgi-bin/ML_search.cgi?test=&year=1848&qtr=4&vol=12&page=745&search=search
the marriage took place at Tacket Street Meeting House, Ipswich.

Could Martha have been a widow when she married Elisha?. She seems to be older than Elisha. Ten years if the 1813 birth date is the correct one.

Assuming Martha was single, there is a Martha Barker with William and Elizabeth Barker (assumed parents) and James and Abraham (assumed siblings) in 1841 in Westerfield. I have found baptisms for James and Abraham in Westerfield sons/o William and Elizabeth. Also two older sons Luke and Mark, but no Martha. Mark is on 1841 with Ablitt family. I think William is the one who married Elizabeth Fisher on 23 May 1808 in Tuddenham.

Thank you both for your help.
Finding the marriage in the non-conformist records
is very interesting. Perhaps Martha was bapt. there as well.
Pity no sign of Martha's baptism - yet

Hi LizzieL,
The 1841 census for Ipswich St.Clements, with Luke Barker, & Martha (nee Akers) is for a couple a couple who married in 1837 in Essex so it would seem not the Martha i'm looking for.
The 1841 for Westerfield has Martha Barker (aged 15) with parents William & Eliz and siblings James (aged 16) & Abraham (aged 14) looks very promising. I have been able to follow this family in the 1851 & 61 but no other members of this family (other than James) appear.
In looking further, & with your help, I have found 8 children all bapt. to William & Elizabeth Barker - all in Tuddenham St.Martin, with exception of 2;
1811 Lucy
1813 William
1815 Luke
1817 Mark Westerfield
1819 John
1823 James Westerfield
1825 Abraham
1830 Alexandra Jane
Interestingly, there is a gap about 1821 which would tie in nicely with Martha's age of 50 in the 1871 census. However if her burial age(in 1881) is correct then her birth year would be abt 1813.
I think it all will depend on her marriage cert. to see who her father's name & occupation is.

Hi LizzieL,

I think this is the Luke whose baptism was in Tuddenham- just coincidence his wife was also named Martha.
