His father was Joseph Dobbs (1840-1886),and mother Sophia (nee Spencer),(1842-1909).
The last record I can find is the 1891 census for Hucknall where he is single and a bricklayer.
From family stories he emigrated and became a builder.
I thought I had solved it with a Joseph (same birth year) who married a Charlotte in Basford and emigrated to Richmond Virginia,also with both parents with the same names,but came from Derby !
I cannot seem to find any further records after 1891,nor the record of his birth in 1863.
I would greatly appreciate any further information.

Many thanks for your replies Kloumann.Unfortunately this is the family I mention in my post,so many similarities but not my John Dobbs.
My John Dobbs in the 1891 census for Hucknall is single and with his widowed mother and was born in Hucknall.The "Virginian" Joseph Dobb and Charlotte married in Basford District in 1881 and in the USA records he was born in Derbyshire.
Thank you Larkspur for Joseph's birth record ,it's not on Ancestry or FamilySearch.Will investigate the other siblings you mention.

Who is John Dobbs? You were looking for a Joseph Dobb whose mother was Sophia Spencer. I posted the death cert for Joseph in Richmond Virginia which listed his mother as Sophia Spencer & the 1871 census in Hucknall with his grandparents, states he was born in Derby.

Gracol, I would think that the Joseph that went to USA is your Joseph. His parents are the same, wife Charlotte. He is a bricklayer.The last known place he lived was Walsall and he is here on the 1901 census

This census says he was born in Derby but it also says Charlotte was born in Hucknall.
Hucknall and Derby are only about 18 miles apart ( There is also an Ault Hucknall in Derby)
He could have been under his mothers roof for only one night of the census.....
Joseph Dobb naturalisation record he states he sailed on the Carminia, arrived 11 Feb 1907. There is also a record for him on the Friesland arriving on the 13th Oct 1907.
Charlotte seems to have followed him on the Coronia on 10 Sep 1908 she has a daughter Florrie aged 8 with her.

I hope he is "my" Joseph ! So many similarities.
However -the 1891 Hucknall census shows him as single.
Also Kloumann's post showing his death certificate gives his date of birth as 6 Feb 1863.
Would really appreciate your thoughts on this Larkspur.

His birth was registered in Derby, 1st quarter 1863 which fits with 6th Feb. He was baptised much later in the year in Hucknall.

No sign of his wife, Charlotte & children, Gertrude, Joseph Jr, or Annie anywhere on the 1891 census. They may also have been living with his parents but did not want to declare it.

I cannot find the immigration records of children--Gertrude (b 1882),Joseph {b 1886),Annie (b 1888),and Percy (b 1894) from his Naturalisation Paper he arrived Philadelphia in 1909 Apr 4 on the "Friesland).
They all emigrated to USA thanks to Kloumann's posts.

I found it on Ancestry- I just put in Florrie Dobb birth 1900 Derby in the search and it is the second hit.

I am working through Joseph Dobbs offspring ,many seem to have followed him to the USA.
There is a record of immigration to Philadelphia in 1909 which shows son Joseph age 20 accompanied by Hannah Dobb age 11,and further down Percy Dobb,age 10,Joseph & Hannah being described as his parents !
I cannot find any record of Hannah Dobb's birth in Walsall in 1898 (as her immigration record shows).
Any help appreciated.

The ages are not correct. Hannah is Annie. Look at the 1901 census for Walsall. Percy in 1901 is spelt Puosie. All down to whoever writes it down.

The Sophia Dobb, born in 1896, died Walsall, 1897. Name was spelt Dobbs but I think it is the same.

Strange no record of Joseph Dobb birth around 1889 ,Beeston Notts area ?

Found Joseph Dobbs birth record on GRO-Shardlow District Derbyshire,1886 M Qtr,mothers maiden name Wilkinson confirms.

Could somebody help with the following--
Lottie May Dobb,born 1891 Walsall.Found a marriage to a Ernest William France in Plymouth in 1909.In 1923 Lottie May France arrived in the USA on the "Albania" with husband Ernest Rosier France,this is my Lottie as parent in record is Joseph Dobb with the right address,and born in Walsall.
I cannot find a record of their marriage,if indeed this is a different marriage to the Plymouth marriage ??
Several other USA records of Lottie May and Ernest ROSIER France.
Would appreciate any help.

Ernest Rosier France's WW1 military record shows he married Lottie May Dobb in Plymouth,why middle name shown as William I don't know.
Of Joseph & Charlottes 8 children,6 followed him emigrating to the USA.
Another Sophia Dobb born 1896 died in 1897.
And the other ,May Dobb shown in the 1901 census as being born in 1888,I cannot find any record of.??

Kloumann,ref your reply no 17 I have searched but cannot find any record in the 1891 census of his wife or three children.His declaration in that census that he is single and no family shown with him, all seems rather suspicious.
His grandfather a Joseph Dobbs was a bit of a lad, using an alias, Morton, and spending time in prison.

It was quite common for names to be left off the census if there were too many people living in a smallish property.
One of my ancestors did the same thing to avoid being re-housed.

That surprises me,I had assumed people gave honest answers in fear of some sort of comeback if found out they were not being truthful.
Looked on the web ,but little of any relevance.
