Hi
Can anyone give me an idea as to what Margarett's surname might be, it's completely stumped me.
Thankyou in advance
claire

I see:-
M. Croydon
I'm probably wrong with the start of the next word.
I see "St"
-
I thought I could see St but there is no Capital to follow ... still guessing
-
Str?
-
Any other instances of Surname in whatever you are looking at?
-
Thankyou for the suggestions so far
I had the initial letter of the surname as an 'S' too. I've looked at other words etc. in the Will and thought that the name could have been Sturtote - but I've never heard of that as a surname. She was a widow at the time the Will was written but her maiden surname (Litchelade) hasn't helped me find a marriage for her either. The Will was dated 1622.
Thankyou
A couple of examples of letters in the Will which may point to the Sturtote name being correct :-\

Hi
There are no other mentions of Margarett in the Will that I can see, and I can read most of it but this eludes me completely.
The Will is part of Ancestry's PCC Collection - Anne Comyns 12 August 1622
Thank you

more thoughts on it ... could it be Margarett St. short for Stuart or whatever, then in tote, meaning that's all, in total ?
-
Reading the Will I think it is a surname - it reads 'Margarett S ? ? ? wydowe'
But I suppose it could be short for something. But what ? ;D
-
Could you copy more of the text around Margarett's name so we might guess from the context?
-
Here we go
-
to my sister Margarett ... she is his sister ? What's his name ?
-
The Will is of Anne Comyns 1622
Their maiden surnames were Litchelade and they were born in London (Margarett) and Surrey (Anne/Agnes )
Devil to try and trace the family at all, very few Litchelade records available.
-
Could it be Stratoth ?
Usually when an arcive publishes the fact that they have a Last Will & Testament, all the names mentioned are in the index list pertaining to the item - there must be another surname against the published index.
After surfing I now find this Roman & Greek passage which contains the same word:
"battle against Seleucus in his old age had lately married Stratothe Celtiberians. ...
and this modern phrase:
9 Nov 2015 - During the attack on Fort Washington, Margaret Corbin stood alongside ... the KC-135R Stratothe United States Air Force tanker.

Hi Rena and all that answered
After trying various ways of spelling STRATOTHE in Boyds Inhabitants of London I think I may have found the answer
An Arthur STARTUSS appears with his wife Margaret LIXLADE - bit different than the spelling I had for her surname - Lichelade, but I’m sure it’s them.
So thank you so much 😊

So pleased for you that your problem is solved.
I actually found your Litchelade (Not lichelade) surname yesterday in a website, which seemed to be a list of names in Wills.
I had a look at the second name in your image today, but couldn't find the darned website again to look for a satisfactory equivalent.
