Title: Underwood/Collier
Post by: MosesKinne on Wednesday 08 April 20 03:35 BST (UK)
Hello,

My ancestor James Underwood was baptised in Chobham Surrey in 1747 , son of William and Jane Underwood. I think I’ve found their marriage in Sunninghill Berkshire in 1732. Janes maiden name was Collier. Does it say of what parish they were or living at the time of their marriage ?

William could be the William Underwood who was baptised in Chobham in 1706 son of William and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown )

I need help to find the baptisms of William and Jane and to trace their ancestors. I appreciate every help and information

regards

Moses

I note the marriage you mention and the baptism records of the children, given the names of the children the record for William in 1706 seems to be correct, one tree on A….y has Jane born the same year in Sunninghill, Berkshire but I can not find a record.

William Underwood
Jane Collier
Marriage 18/06/1732 Sunninghill, Berkshire

Baptisms Chobham, St Lawrence parents William & Jane (dates on some sites vary)

Elizabeth Underwood   30 Oct 1732
Mary Underwood   23 Sep 1735
William Underwood   6 Jan 1736
Elizabeth Underwood   3 Dec 1738
Mary Underwood   5 May 1740
Henry Underwood   19 Nov 1743
James Underwood   2 Feb 1747
Jane Underwood   1 Apr 1751

@chempat
Thank you for the link, I did not know about this site

@Colin

I can’t find a baptism for Jane Collier either :( Thank you for the siblings baptism of James Underwood!

Is there a marriage for William and Elizabeth Underwood, the parents of William born 1706 Chobham?

Thank you all for your help

Sadly no marriage for William & Elizabeth and William 1706 seems to be the only child.

If you add another sibling, Richard, baptised at Chobham in 1756 then you have my x5 gr grandfather.

I haven't researched any further back than the parents William and Jane.  Probably because I couldn't find a marriage at Chobham!

Just looking at Elizabeth's baptism in 1732.  The dates DO differ from record to record.

One looks to read '8 br ye 30th'.  I would think this is 30th August!  The years are also written half way through the actual months of the year, eg 1731 is written between March and May.  I've seen this a lot over the years and never researched why.  This could explain the marriage in Berkshire if they were married after Elizabeth was born.

The other date is 30 Apr 1732 making, 6 weeks before the wedding?!?!

Thank you both for your replies! :)

Yes, this could have been a reason why they married in Berkshire or Jane Collier was from Berkshire and they married in the brides parish. But Collier is also a very common name in Surrey.

Maybe William Underwood and Elizabeth married also outside of Surrey or their marriage is not digitized. I would love to find out more about the family because first I’ve traced the wrong Underwood family.

Moses

I've noticed some Ancestry tree's have the Chobham and Godalming families mixed together!  It doesn't help that they are having children at the same time with similar names does it.  Have you done a DNA test?!  I wonder if we match.

I saw these trees too! Some people often have wrong people in their trees and their trees are not accurate.

I haven’t done a dna test yet but I want to.

Are your later ancestors also from Chobham?!  Is that how you sorted out the correct family?!

No, James Underwood is my only ancestor from Chobham. He married a woman from Horsell and moved to Chertsey Surrey where most of my Surrey ancestors were born and married and stayed most of their life
