Hello!
I was wondering if someone could help me? (first time I have researched Irish genealogy and I'm lost!) I am looking for a marriage record for a Mary Beattie / Beatty and a man named Gaffney (sorry I don't know his first name). They had 2 sons, one in 1935 and the other in 1936 both in Cavan. The only other fact I know is Mary was nicknamed Molly.
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance x

Do they mention any place in Cavan?

No just Cavan, Ireland ???
-
can't see any marriage matching so I guess I'm gonna have to look through all the male Gaffney's who married a Mary or Molly and see if she was perhaps a widow?
-
The two sons are on FamilySearch both with a reg district of Cavan, their mother could have come from a different reg district and marriages usually happen in the brides parish.
Marriages on Irish Genealogy are usually indexed with a widow's maiden name.

So far only one marriage for a beatty and a Gaffney but in 1897.. they would have been too old for 1935! ::)
-
Do you know the Reg Districts for Co Cavan?
If not... go to https://www.swilson.info/regdistmap.php and select Co Cavan using first dropdown box.
8 Districts!
So just put Gaffney in... year range and tick Marriage box and search
you'll see a list on left in results and then check those in Cavan districts

I did see a birth for a Mary Beattie in Cavan 1907 which could fit but I am now worried that she may have not been from there at all and perhaps moved there after getting married ??? Apparently, they split up when the children were young and she moved to Harrow in Middlesex. He later married so I am now going to search newspaper records in hope of a divorce notice... unless he was a bigamist lol

Thanks :)
Ive found Marys's headstone and it reads the following;
in loving memory of MARY GAFFNEY
Crossmolina and Cavan
died 21-oct-1990
aged 82 years
her son DICk
died 3-sep-1992
aged 56 years
She died in Crossmolina so do you think maybe Cavan was her place of birth? or maybe just the town she lived in for a long time? mind you she also lived in Middlesex for a while and there's no mention of that on her headstone? lol
-
I see that...looks fairly new too. Who put stone up?
-
Cavan....birthplace
-
Anne Mary Gaffney..Late of Gurteen, Sligo and Manchester
most probably no connection but.... Undertaker is in Crossmolina, he might be able to get you name of whoever made g/stone for yours, he might have been u/taker for yours!.
You could then ask if he can pass message to family as he probably won't say who paid for g/stone
https://rip.ie/death-notice/anne-mary-gaffney-ballindine-mayo/279003 with email address for u/taker

I just thought I’d add a thought to this thread as I have a cousin who was born in West Ealing, which was in Middlesex at the time, it’s now in West London. My cousin’s father was John Beattie, he died several years ago and I think he came from Cavan or perhaps Leitrim which is close by to Cavan.
Don’t know if there is any link to the information already here but I thought I’d throw it in the arena.

Hope all well.... the Mary on Census was Bawnboy District. I posted a Link to them. see if anything rings a bell with Cousin.
-
Thank you everyone for your input! I'm going to have a good read through everything again and have a good look around :)
-
Thanks Hallmark, all well here as I’m on 12 week lockdown will have to contact my cousin to find out more about the Beatties.
😀

Thank you :)

Does anyone know if there is an Irish version of 192.com? I was just thinking of maybe searching the electoral rolls if poss to see if anyone else lived with Mary who may have been a relative with a different name that I can link up?
-
Also just thinking is it possible Mary and Mr Gaffney weren't married? as I can't find anything at all :/ and maybe just listed themselves as married due to having 2 children out of wedlock? Only thing is she died a Gaffney but would they have needed proof of the marriage?
-
You would be surprised how many marriages were never registered, still occasionally happens.
-
Oh double bugger :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
Out of the blue I got a phone call from a cousin ( she was a Beattie before she married) who I haven't spoken to for a year or so. I was telling her about the Gaffney/Beattie thread but she wasn't aware of the Gaffney name at all. Her father John Beattie was from Leitrim but she never really knew much about his Irish roots. He died in Ealing in 1989.

No probs, John Beattie was born in 1916 and had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. He married my Mum’s sister Anna Louise Wilson, known as my Auntie Lily, she was in the WAAFs. I did write down the names in my book but not at hand at the moment. She said Margaret was one of his siblings.
My family used to visit my cousin’s family at weekends when they lived in West London when I was young. :)

I did do a quick search on John Beattie and his siblings and indeed there was a Margaret but would she be called nicknamed 'Mary'? I don't suppose you would know where in West London?
Sorry for all the questions!
-
John Beattie lived in Ealing W5, I do have the exact address but don’t want to post publicly.
John’s sisters were Margaret ,Josie and Edna ? (My cousin was unsure of her exact number). His brothers were called Walter and Tommy.
Don’t know whether Margaret was referred to as Mary.
Uncle John and family only lived 5 miles from my family when I was young, we enjoyed our occasional Sunday afternoon visits to see them.

It's a nightmare tracing this woman! :o :( I only know she was born about 1908.. sadly unlike the UK death records online the Irish ones don't give you a date of birth :(

They have done since December 2005 in the Irish Republic and since 1973 in Northern Ireland.

Can anyone suggest anything that might help me locate any other family members or more info on with Molly and her sons??? I've emailed the archives, churches. cemeteries and no one has replied. :( :( :(
-
I'VE HAD A BREAKTHROUGH!!!! ;D
So i've managed to locate a grandchild of Molly on Ancestry and on their tree (which has pretty much nothing on the Gaffney's) but they have listed Molly's husband as a James Gaffney! Seems that's all they knew about him but i have a name and that's all that matters at the mo!
-
Great news, hope you find out more on your quest😀

No joy yet but i'll keep hunting!

So i ordered a copy of their son's birth certificate and it confirms his fathers name was James! Woohoo! but is that Cloncavid underneath his name? I've tried googling but not helping that much ???
(I've removed the son's name as he is still alive)

The informant Elizabeth Nolan? lived in Gowna which is in Scrabby District in Cavan R.D. Here's Scrabby Electoral Division.
https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/scrabby1/ and the townland associated with Gowna.
https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/tullyhunco/scrabby/scrabby/loch-gowna-scrabby/
If she spoke with a broad Cavan accent, she might have said 'Cloncavid', written down by the registrar, when the actual name was Cloncovet.
https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/clanmahon/drumlumman/kilcogy/cloncovet/
This townland is about 7km SE of Gowna.
Just a thought ???

Do you know if it's possible to find electoral rolls for Cavan for the 1920's / 1930's?

Also can anyone read the place of birth?

Looks like Cloncavit?, Cavan RD (Rural or Registration District).
For the electoral rolls have a look at this article.

You probably need to contact the archives at Cavan County Library.
