Title: Walter O'Donnell, NY
Post by: Bellevue on Saturday 11 April 20 15:34 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am looking for the parents of Walter O'Donnell born (I think) 1902, died 1976 in Orange County, New York. This is likely him https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/190157695/walter-a_-o_donnell

His wife was Mary Hallisey married 1931.

He was put up for adoption along with possibly 10 siblings.

I have been told that his parents *might* be John O'donnell & Katie O'Brien. I would like to confirm this if possible.

Thank you for your help.

I am not interested in his children and forward (already have that info), only his parents and back! Thanks

ok. thank you for this. I did not have that record. I can see them in a few censuses now also.

So the father John was born in Ireland about 1868 and arrived in the US about 1882 as per the 1910 census.

EDIT
on both the 1900 and 1920 and 1930 censuses John has an arrival date of 1885. and it says he is Naturalized. Need to find his naturalisation doc.

Most of these seem like possible births for his siblings:  https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?q.anyPlace=new%20jersey&q.fatherSurname=o%27donnell&q.motherGivenName=catherine&q.motherSurname=o%27brien&f.collectionId=1675383&count=20&offset=0&m.defaultFacets=on&m.queryRequireDefault=on&m.facetNestCollectionInCategory=on#collections

yes, Thomas 1889 is definitely a son but the others do not tie up with the census ages at all by a long shot. Strange. Two John O'D & Kate O'Brien's in Hoboken, Hudson....

Ok, bit of a problem now!

This is Walter in the 1940 census, single. The family that I was presuming was correct.
All ages match perfectly.

So the Walter that married in 1932. This Walter is the one I want to follow. So it must mean that there were TWO Walters in NJ, son of John O'D and Catherine O'Brien!!!!

Is this Walter in 1910? There are other O’Donnells with him, Patric and the one transcribed as ‘Mandrake’ looks like Michael.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M58P-NDL

There is also possibly a John a few lines above.

This may be that family and therefore the one you have in 1900 as your family

Is the John who is father to Walter? Do you have Walter with him in 1910?

This is a problem as you say.
The Walter who is an inmate in 1910 might be from the family in 1900, already posted.
There is no Thomas there  :-\
Do you have a reference for your family in 1900. You mention you have  John in 1900, 1920 and 1930.

Ok. you might have found the second John & Catherine Family in 1900 in Hudson, NJ
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9JV-P26

Your 1910 census for the Hudson family looks positive
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M58P-NDL
Mandrake O'Donnell   Inmate   Male   13   New Jersey
Patric O'Donnell   Inmate   Male   11   New Jersey
Walter O'Donnell   Inmate   Male   7   New York

Then the other in 1900 Camden, New Jersey

John O Donnel
Kate O Donnel
Thomas O Donnel
James O Donnel
Kate O Donnel
Hannah O Donnel
Marie O Donnel

The Camden family in 1910
John O'Donnell Age41
Katherine O'Donnell Age40
Thomas J O'Donnell Age20
James M O'Donnell Age19
Katherine O'Donnell Age17
Joanna O'Donnell Age15
Marie O'Donnell Age12
Nellie O'Donnell Age9
Margaret O'Donnell Age6
Walter O'Donnell Age4
John O'Donnell Age1

Going back to my original message, I did say that I was given info that Walter and siblings were put up for adoption so maybe this points to the Hudson family.....
So he 1932 marriage of Walter is from the Hudson family maybe.
I will redo my "test" tree and incl this Hudson family and see what hints I get.

The marriage record says he was born in Hoboken, so I would think the ones in Hoboken would more likely be him & his family.  Camden is 1 1/2 hours away from Hoboken, so not like moving the next town over.

There is a WWII draft card from 1942 for a Walter Anthony O'Donnell born 1 Sep. 1905 in Hoboken and living at 1261 Park Ave., New York, NY.  The person listed as the one who would always know his address was his sister Mrs. Jene McLoughlin, 1169 E. 178th St., Bronx, NY.  Not sure if he's the right one or not.

Thanks.
I couldn’t quite understand you having the father in later censuses if several of the children were put up for adoption unless his wife had died and he could not support his family.

I don't know if this is random coincidence, a remarriage, or a similarly named relative, but Mariam O'Donnell married a John E. McLaughlin in Hoboken in 1945.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:HW86-LQZM

Here is the Camden family in 1920
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4P1-LH4

This Walter is 14 yrs born abt 1906. This also fits with 1910 census.

Considering there were adult children in the family in Camden, NJ as of 1920 and that Walter was already 14 with 2 living parents, it doesn't sounds likely to be a family with a bunch of kids put up for adoption.  I would think either his siblings would have cared for him or he would have had to go to work for himself.

I found a Walter Donnell (no O') on the SSDI who has Sept. 1 as his date of birth like the one in the WWII draft card, but the year was 1902.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VSNY-8P1  He died in Aug. 1976.  However, the last place of residence of New York, New York doesn't seem to fit a burial in Orange County.

I found 2 mentions in Monroe, NY newspapers on fultonhistory.com of a Walter O'Donnell that could be him.  One from 2 Sep. 1976 says a mass was going to be said for him the next day at St. Anastasia Church, serving Woodbury-Monroe Townships.  That fits with the cemetery on Find a Grave.  There is also a mention on 2 Nov. 1978 of Mary O'Donnell donating money to the same church in memory of Walter O'Donnell.

I will email my contact who is directly descended from Walter and see if she has any new info. She was adopted herself and has only learned of this line a short time ago.

That sounds more like the one who shows born abt 1906 in censuses.
