please can someone do a 1841 census look up for me HO107-1436-41-5 Samuel cleaton born 1797/1801 living with his wife Ann and their 9 children. Do it say he was born in county and what census year do they asked if he can speak welsh or both
-
1841 says "born in county" but 1851 gives Builth, Breconshire as birthplace.
-
yes which makes it harder to find a baptism for him
-
1871 census says
Llangyrig, Merionethshire so thats 3 county's

Hi do they say he's welsh speaking on the 1851 census
-
It was not asked on 1851 census.
1891 has a possibility living in Glamorgan who is shown as a Welsh speaker.
-
Thank you so it looks like he was born in wales
-
language(s) spoken is only shown on census entries from 1891 onwards. I think the 1871 census is incorrect in showing Merionethshire as there isn't a Llangyrig in that county

but there is a Llangurig in Montgomeryshire

This could be a long shot as i can't find a baptism in wales for Samuel cleaton i wonder if he moved into the area from England and learnt to speak welsh.Samuel named his 1st born Richard. so i been looking for Samuel born abt 1806 with a father name Richard. I found one in Hopton wafers Shropshire his mother died when Samuel was 5 yrs old

have you tried tracing that Samuel through parish records & census entries? Also, 2 siblings baptised in same parish
Richard bp 7 Aug 1803
George bp 12 May 1805 born 1804
