Title: Why would a couple have two marriage certificates 1906 and 1907?
Post by: Cathy53 on Sunday 26 April 20 20:07 BST (UK)
I found today two marriage certificates on scotlandspeople for the same couple.

Statutory marriages 685/3  357
1906 Canongate
Albert Edward Keeping, army service corps. Living at The Castle, Edinburgh.
Janet Macbeth. Living 36 Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh.
Married twenty fifth December 1906.
Married after banns according to forms of the United Free Church.

Statutory marriages 685/4  835
1907 Saint Giles
Married Eleventh September 1907.
Both living at addresses as above.
Both sets of parents matching on both certificates.
This time states married at Sheriff Court House, Edinburgh. By declaration in presence of Robert Hannah, Sargent Army Service Corps and John ? Corporal Army Service Corps.

I wondered why they would have had to marry twice and about 8 months apart. Any help would be great, thank you.

I thought I was devoid of any answer for the marriage duplication but possibly could it be that he failed to get permission from the Army to get married on the first attempt. I saw a similar problem in England when the soldier in question got married "without leave" which I assumed meant without time off but it turned out be be no permission given by the Army to get married.

Any suggestions from any servicemen/women (current or ex). ?

Another answer to my own answer. Note the Sergeant and Corporal at the second marriage. Probably sent by the army. The army needs to know who is getting married. Just like a company today. What happens if you are killed in your employment. Money goes to your wife. Army needs to know if a wife is involved if a soldier is posted to India. Wife goes too. Married housing in India.

Thank you for your replies barryd. I wonder which date they would use for their wedding anniversary! I didn’t realise they would have had to have permission to marry. I might look for children’s births and see if it states marriage dates as quite often in Scotland this is noted on the birth certificates. Thank you again for your thoughts.

Was there any reference to the Register of Corrected Entries on the first certificate?

The date and place of the parents' marriage is always stated on a Scottish birth certificate, assuming of course that the parents were actually married.

Whether the information is always 100% accurate is a different question :)

Some service men (and now women) had to get permission to get married in Uniform. Another rule that may or may not be in exist now.

GR2 neither of the marriage certificates had an RCE.

I have found two births :-

1907 Keeping, Annie Farquhar Kennedy (Statutory Registers Births 685/3  682)
Born twenty fourth May 1907.
This shows parents married December 26 1906. (I misread date as 25 on the original marriage certificate).

1908 Keeping, Albert George (Statutory Registers Births 685/4  868)
Born fifth July 1908
This shows parents married September 11 1907.

My husband and I married September 1964 after he had made a written application to get married.   He was in the RAF  at the time.  We had to wait several weeks before permission was officially given

Only a certain number of soldiers were granted permission to marry, this was known as marrying 'on the strength'. This allowed the couple to live in married quarters and the wife and children had rights to various payments or allowances. If a soldier married without permission, the wife and any children could not live together and had no rights to any allowances, pension payments etc. I can't remember if this is all correct from memory but you get the idea.
I wonder if this second marriage was conducted after permission to marry on the strength was given?

.................probably and the Sergeant and the Corporal were at the second wedding to make sure everything went according to Army Regulations.

Since little Annie was well on the way at the time of the first wedding, the couple wouldn't have wanted to wait for army permission. Perhaps the bride's family insisted on a quick wedding.
