Title: Harry Bowles - Metal Worker?
Post by: TROOPER ROLLO on Wednesday 29 April 20 15:00 BST (UK)
Harry BOWLES was born in 1892 at Marlow, Buckinghamshire, the son of George & Mary Ann Sarah Bowles (née Humphreys) a ‘Fruiterer’s Assistant’ of Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
His father died in 1896 at Marlow and his mother remarried in 1901. He was one of seven children.

This family appears as BOWLES in several census but his Medal Index Card list him as ‘ROWLES’.

In the 1911 census he is is stationed at Dover Castle, (South Front Barracks, Western Heights), serving with the 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment.

He attended the Kings Birthday Parade on 25th & 27th May 1911 with the Regiment.

Harry Rowles entered a ‘War Zone’ on the 30th August 1914 and served in France.

I cannot find anything else about him.

There was a Harry Bowles of the same age who emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1923..                                He was age 32 and listed his trade as ‘Metal Worker’. ???

WAS THIS HIM AND IF SO WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM.

Are you saying that Harry Bowles b Bucks 1892 and Harry Rowles are one & the same person even though his birth reg is Bowles & all census entries have him as Bowles and his parents marriage was Bowles?

There is no Harry Rowles born Bucks on 1901/1911

The MRI you quote is Harry Rowles but there is also an MRI for a Harry Bowles who served with the Berkshire Yeomenry machine gun  corps

Can you clarify why you think Harry Bowles & Harry Rowles are the same person?

What is the profile of the Harry Rowles you are researching?

I have a database of every ROWLES birth, death and marriage from 1837 to date.
There is no Harry Rowles born in 1892 or anywhere near.
When Rowles is written with a loose hand it is often transcribed as BOWLES.
This man is not the only WW1 ROWLES soldier (of which I have researched 320) to have his name wrongly transcribed. There is no death in this country that matches his date of birth so I make the case that this man matches the Medal Index Card listing him as a ROWLES.
There are no service papers surviving so I am deducing this.
If a death or marriage (which would list his father) in America could be found it might solve the riddle.

There is a Harry William Bowles born 21 May 1892 Salisbury England died 1970 New York under Bowles.   Under Bowlas on the 1920 census but that says immigrated 1907. A declaration of intention says born Blagdon England. Probably not yours.
Yours doesn't seem to have a middle name.   Have you got an exact date of birth ?

It looks like the person listed above him, Clare Doreen Brandon, is his sister, so that might help narrow down what Harry it is.

Clare Doreen Brandon married Raymond Ward Phillips on  25 Mar. 1925 in Santa Ana, California.  It looks like Clare was born 19 Apr. 1885 in Horsmondon, UK to Stephen Bowles & Harriet F. Neal and she died 16 Dec. 1963 in Monterey, California.

This is Harry's burial - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/100654824/harry-jasper-bowles  Looks like he's a different Harry.
