Hi everyone hope all are safe . Ok I think I could do with some help here, my 3 x great grandmother was flora adamson Clark born 18 sep 1837 ,died 8 apr 1906 In arbroath , I have her parents as Ann adamson born 1811 arbroath died 1883 , I have a marriage for Ann adamson and James Clark 17 July 1831 arbroath.... but I cannot find anything about this James clark on the 1841 census James is not mentioned, 1851 states she is a widow ,1861 she states a seamen's widow and for the life of me I'm truly stuck and I'm not a novice at this but I'm stumped anybody out there who could help solve thank you in advance ...marti

If he was at sea on 6 Jun 1841 he would not be on the census, he could have then have been lost at sea between 1841 and 1851. You would then have to rely on the old parish records and without a body registering his death may have been difficult/impossible. Perhaps someone who is a legal whizz could help.

Between 1841 and 1851 is before the start of civil registration in Scotland (1855) so there would be no question of registering his death. "Death" records in Scotland in that era basically concern the funeral which, if he were lost at sea, wouldn't be a concern. Even if he were buried in Scotland, the chances are poor that any record exists, though you'd need to consult the NRS site to see whether there are any burial records for that locality. This applies, of course, even if he died before 1841.
Indeed, it occurs to me that I think (but am open to correction) that the 1841 does not record widows / widowers, so he could have died before 1841.

In general no although I have come across 'Widow' although I can't recall exactly what was written e.g. Farmer's widow or suchlike.

Have you checked MI's for Arbroath although he maybe not buried there he maybe remembered on a stone

You don't say whether Flora was married?
If she married & in Scotland, what info. is given on her marriage about her father?
Have you also tried the option of 'names that begin with' as he may have been recorded elsewhere as Clarke?

Hi everyone and thank you for your replies , I've been of line and have just picked them up , flora did get married but just say James Clark father deceased. Certainly a tricky one will have to plan a trip to Scotland when all this is over thank you all again
