Hi, everyone,
I am currently researching the Carr surname in Fife, however, I have hit a brick wall regarding Alexander Carr's parents. According to Alexander's marriage in 1894 to Catherine McLean, he is living in Links, Buckhaven and is a coal miner. It also states that his father is Alexander Carr, a joiner, who is deceased and his mother is Jane Carr m.s. Milne. I can find no marriage record for Alexander & Jane or death records for them either. Similarly, I cannot find a birth record for Alexander Carr, the son. I have searched census records too and, until 1911, Alexander Carr does not appear and gives his birthplace as Locher, Forfarshire. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

What birthyear is given for him in 1911 and could his birthplace be Lochee rather than Locher
-
Hi Carole,
He gives his age as being 44 in 1911 so that would put his birth year approximately 1866/67.
-
1871 census for Angus
Jane Milne 35 b Lochee millworker
Alexander 4 b Lochee
ED7 pge 7 line 4
-
Same address in 1881 but with the addition of a brother Charles aged 8. Charles birth is on SP in Lochee
I suspect he was illegitimate so it may be best to look at the 1871 image to see if Jane was unmarried
-
In 1901 Charles is shown as Charles Dowall Milne aged 29 b Lochee

Thank you for these records, Carole. I don't know why I didn't think of checking under Jane's name for Alexander. I wonder why Alexander adopted the surname Carr when he got married?
-
Did he have a middle name?

Jane 35
Alexander A 4
1881: 282/5 7/ 21
Jane 45
Alexander 14

1891: 282/5 1/ 53

Just a possibility but sometimes illegitimate children have contact with their father in later life and adopt the fathers surname. It may be that Jane was deceased by then & Alexander decided to use his fathers name.
I may be on completely the wrong track but it could be why you can't find him under Carr in earlier censuses.
Can you give some details of Catherine plus any children born before 1911 so we can check the 1901 - can't find anything at the moment

There's a birth in Dundee third district of a Alexander Adams Milne in 1867 ref number 282/3 84
On Family search it's Alexander Adamson Milne b14 Feb 1867 mother Jane Milne no father

Thank you, folks. Alexander and Catherine had two children: Jane McLean Carr (1896-1969) & Gabriel Alexander Carr (1900-1959). I too haven't found them in 1901 but, again, haven't checked under Milne!

I wonder why Alexander adopted the surname Carr when he got married?
It was/is very common for illegitimate children to use the surname of their reputed father at least in Scotland.

That’s true. My GG grandfather was born to an unmarried Cameron and yet emigrated, married and died as Morrison. Having said that, he was also on census as Morrison, mother as Cameron.

Possible death of Catherine Carr other name McLean 1903 Buckhaven
Possible remarriage for Alexander to a Christina Thompson 1914
Possible death for Alexander 1925 all in Buckhaven
Not found anything on Jane but if that is a second marriage could tell if Jane still alive or narrow down a date for a death

What names do you see for witnesses on the marriage certificate, 1894.
This refers to Census 1911 -
"...until 1911, Alexander Carr does not appear and gives his birthplace as Locher, Forfarshire."
What are you seeing for this 1911 Census
