Title: Aileen Joy Brewster/Gale
Post by: Laurence Gale on Thursday 07 May 20 13:35 BST (UK)
Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well during this most...odd of times.

For a number of years my dad has been been wondering about the history of his mum's family. Unfortunately she passed away when he was very young, so he never had the chance to ask her any questions.

Thanks to the lockdown and a conveniently timed Ancestry freebie, I've had the time do some very basic digging.

The amount of information I have found is very limited but here it is:
Born 1922, registered at Wangford. Mothers maiden name was Penny,

Married Alfred Edward Godfrey Gale in 1951 in Sutton and Cheam, Surrey
Died 1959 in same location.

I'm particular interested in finding out about her parents so that I can go digging further down the roots!

I suspect I wont be able to find much else untill the next batch of census information is released into the wild, alas.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Aileen was born in 1921,not 1922.

Births December quarter 1921
BREWSTER, Aileen J
Mother's maiden surname: PENNY
Wangford    4a   1909

She won't be on the 1921 census.

Her birth cert will give both parents' names and her father's occupation, but you should get her marriage certificate first to match the father's details.

You can search for a BREWSTER/PENNY marriage.  I can only see one possible in 1912 but this may be unlikely if there were no children born for 9 years.

Welcome to rootschat

Electoral registers on Ancestry have an Aileen J Brewster and Rose E Brewster living at 30 Staton Road, Sutton in 1950/51

That would tie in with the 1912 marriage already mentioned

I cannot give details but Rose is at the same address in 1939 as she is in 1950

You really need Aileens birth certificate before taking this further back

If you don't manage to find it the best place to order from is the GRO.  https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Hi,

I know you posted a couple of days ago so trust you have spotted Rose Penny and Alfred Brewster's marriage in the register at St Barnabas Sutton in 1912 and Rose and her mother Rosa in the Waveney valley in the 1911 census. My guess would be that Aileen was born at her grandmother's.

Just wanted to add that Brewster is a common surname in the area. Although Alfred's immediate family seem to be from Sutton and Essex, it would be worth looking out for some 'country cousins' link - Rose and Alfred may have met through connections in Suffolk rather than in Sutton.

Good luck with the search.

If you buy her birth cert - order the pdf version which only costs £7 instead of £11

Hi there,

I am too researching the Brewster family of Wangford.  My relatives are much farther back tho but could be connected.  Mine starts with John Brewster of 1768, and his son, James Brewster of 1806(?). Both born in Wangford.  John Brewster was the pub owner in the town at the time.  Please let me know if you find any connections during your research.
