I am getting a bit stuck trying to find the birth and marriage (married Gorgina 1871-1881) of Samuel Gabe b 1851. Details as below:

The Royal Marine in Furlough comment is strange. His 'father' was not in the RM when he married (occ Labourer).
It would not surprise me if he was a child of Mary as previously suggested but brought up by John & Ellen as their own. It would be strange for a 3 wk child not to be with its mother.

possibly the mother was ill after the birth and with other children to cope with maybe Mary had taken Samuel to visit relatives while Helen recovered
