Title: Maiden Name
Post by: matilda46 on Friday 15 May 20 14:49 BST (UK)
I have a death of Ellen Flynn in Swellan Cavan in June 1889. The informant was Patrick Flynn (her son).
I am wondering if there is any way of finding Ellen's maiden name. I know the records did not give a lot of information until much later.
This is one of my brick walls.
Thanks in advance for any help.

There is a Patrick Flynn in Swellan in 1901......could this be him?

I see mum was 62 when she died in 1889,so born approx 1827.

as Ellen was the widow of a Railway employee I'd said this is spot on.

I tried to find the son Christopher's birth but couldn't so looked for Peter but his mother was Anne Smith, as the search went on I believe Anne Smith Flynn died 1895

but so far I haven't found a marriage to Kate
if this is correct than Patrick's father was Christy (Christopher) on the marriage to Anne Smith

All needs checking

Hi Carol and Sinann
Thanks for the replies. Patrick Flynn is right, but it is Ellen's (his mother's) maiden name I am trying to find to find.
She was married to Philip Flynn (railway employee). I have what I think is the marriage.
Her maiden name may have been Morris but until I can be sure, and with no proof, I don't want to perhaps put the wrong person in my tree. Thanks again.

As she likely married before Civil Registration the way to find her maiden name is to follow her family back, so find her child's marriage, his age, his birth cert or baptism and you get her name.

That ìs exactly what we are trying to find for you. If we can find Patrick's birth then we will get his mother's maiden name.

There is a previous thread (2015) about the Flynn family. It may help to refer to what has been found on this family in later years.

Yes looking at it again the father is Philip not Christy.

As Patrick doesn't appear to have a birth cert in County Cavan and there is no Flynn baptised in the local church to a Philip and Ellen so they likely moved to the area later also Patricks marriages are two late to be on NLI you either need to see the church record of his marriage(s) and hope the mother's full name is given or figure where the family started out by finding Patrick's baptism.
Are you are aware of any siblings Patrick had?

You mention that you have the marriage. When and where was that?
You also mention Morris as a possible surname for Ellen.

Here is a birth for Mary/Maria Flynn 14th November 1858 Drumlumman South

Sponsors which may help - Jacobus (James) Morris and Marsella Flynn.

Hi All,

The information I have is as follows:
Phillip Flynn and Eleanor Morris were married in Drumlumman South (Ballymachugh) on 30 January 1858.

Mary Flynn (daughter) born on 14 November 1858.
Sponsors – James Morris and Marcella Flynn.

Patrick Flynn born 27 December 1861.
Mother’s name transcribed as – Marrow
Sponsors - ? McTierney and Bridget Flynn.

I can find no other children for Philip and Eleanor.
I have traced some of Eleanor's family as well.

The Marcella Flynn above is I believe Philip’s sister. We are related by DNA.
Marcella went on to marry in 1859 and I have traced all her family.

Philip has always been my stumbling block. Information on him has been so hard to find.
He seems to have disappeared after 1864 when he was the informant at Marcella’s baby’s birth in Granard.
I think Phillip was born about 1835 in Castlepollard in Westmeath. This would make him about 9 years younger than Eleanor who was born in Kilkenny in 1826. I may have the wrong Phillip.
I can find no record of Phillip’s death, have searched everywhere.

I have all the information about Patrick, his marriages and siblings and all their families.

Thanks to everyone for trying so hard to help, I am really appreciative.

Thanks for the information. It saves my posting what I have found.

Just one thing - re Patrick’s Godfather, I think it looks like Hugo (Hugh) McNerny.

Philip and Ellen’s witness was also Philip Flynn - was that his father?
30th January 1858

On the birth of Maria Hyland, Philip Flynn is still in the same area - his residence shown as Kilgolagh.
