Hello,
I have been looking for a link between William Burton born 1869 in Oakamoor Staffordshire died 1925.He was married to Jane Critchlow and some other Burtons in the area. Descendants of James Burton born in Alton in 1819 died Oct 1886 in Cheadle Staffs married to Lucy Nixon.I think quite a few of this family went to Australia and USA and returned? They live in neighboring areas and I can't believe the tree doesn't link somewhere but there are so many Burtons I
am getting quite mind boggled trying to sort them out.
If anyone could help that would be great.

This is one of those occasions when you have to do a lot of work tracing all the likely looking Burton families.
I had a look at the 1861 census for James & Lucy and the implication is that between 1852 and 1859 they appear to have gone to Australia. They have one of their sons James Hobart Burton as born in Australia in 1856. Hobart gives you a big clue as to where they were in Australia.
All the other children listed were born in the UK.
I would be going back to the 1819 James and looking to see what siblings he had and if any of them went to Australia.
On the Victoria Outward Passenger Lists 1852-1915 there is a James Burton who departed in September 1854 and went to Hobart, Tasmania. He presumably went with the family and one assumes returned by 1859. His birth year is given as 1820.
It will be a long, slow slog but if you wish to find the connection you will need to do a lot of searching of records I'm afraid.
Do you have any other names of James (1819) siblings? I'm sure other Rootschatters will be willing to assist you. However we need to know what you already know so that research isn't duplicated.

It is less of the Australian bit and more finding a connection between these two families in Alton and Oakamoor Cheadle. I have a tree of both but no connections so far. I can’t believe when they live in the same area there is no connection. I think there must be a cousin somewhere that I haven’t found.

It depends on how far back you have gone. There may well be a connection but further back than you expected it to be.

Blimey thirteen kids it is no wonder there are Burtons everywhere!

Most of the time the Victorians went in for big families. Quite a number of these children would die as infants or young children. This then reduced the actual number living to adulthood.
As I have done family research I have seen the number of children born through the generations go steadily down to about two to three on average.

I am not sure if some of these are correct as there is an Eliza and an Elizabeth and two Williams I think. They all seem to have survived so I don't think they can both be correct?
